This is an exciting time for The Squad Club as we shift up a gear from our post-Pandemic recovery and look ahead to an ambitious future. We are seeking a new Chair of Trustees who will provide strategic leadership and a positive collaborative culture as we move forward into a period of renewal and growth. And, ultimately, provide excellent experiences for our members.
About the Squad Club
The Squad is a Wimbledon based charity that has supported local people with Special Educational Needs & Learning Disability since its inception in 1993. Our vision is to create a member-first community that provides empowering social opportunities to enable adults and young people with learning disabilities to live their lives, be included, to have their voice heard and make their own choices. We seek to achieve this by offering inclusive, informal educational and fun social activities for adults and young people with learning disabilities in Merton. We aim to create an environment where our Members,Volunteers and Club Leaders, together, experience opportunities, learn new skills, build confidence and improve mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.
The Squad runs a weekly ‘Juniors club’ for members aged 13-25 and a weekly ‘Vets’ club for members aged 25+ years old. The clubs are run separately and both have their own programme of age-appropriate activities. Both projects offer a wide range of opportunities and experiences for their members and strive to improve confidence, build support networks and give people with SEND a place in which they feel secure and supported.
Chair of Trustees’ governing responsibilities

To contribute actively to the board of trustees' role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting objectives

Chair of Trustees recruitment process
The Squad’s recruitment process for the Chair of Trustees will consist of a two-stage interview process with a variety of current trustees. Each interview will assess the candidate’s suitability using competency based questions focused on the candidate’s relevant skills and experience in relation to the role. After completing both stages of the interview process, the successful candidate will be given the opportunity to attend a club night at the centre is South Wimbledon to meet the Team Leaders, Volunteers and members.
The Candidate will also be invited to a Trustee Board meeting as a visitor to observe the Squad’s Board if they wish to do this. The successful candidate will also be put forward to the Trustee Board by the interview panel for Board approval, where all current trustees will vote to approve the appointment of the candidate before the role is formally offered to them.

Why am I needed?

Our aim is simple – to deliver a vision where fewer people get cancer and those that do receive equal access to excellent treatment. However, we can’t do this without your help. Our shops in local communities are crucial to us raising vital funds. So, we’d like you to volunteer your time and commitment to help us make a difference. We need you to help sort, value and display our vinyl and media donations in our shops to help turn them into cash.
What will I be doing?
Sorting through our media (CD/DVDs/Vinyl) donations and pricing them ready for sale
Researching interesting vinyl online on sites such as Discogs, eBay and Amazon to value them for sale in the shop
Displaying the media on the shop floor ensuring stock is rotated regularly to increase sales
Enlisting help from local auction houses when needed
Speaking with customers, making them welcome and answering queries
Promoting awareness of the charity and the services that we provide.
What skills do I need?
It’d be great if you have some knowledge of or interest in vinyl/media and know what to look out for when valuing.
A really keen eye for detail and ability to cross reference items across a number of websites to provide the most realistic valuation
Ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team
Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the team and customers.
Ability to use computer for research
You may need to handle bags and donations from the public and there may be stairs to climb depending on which shop you are based in. If you have any concerns about this, please speak with the Shop Manager when expressing your interest in volunteering.
How much time do I need to commit?
We’d need you to give around three hours per week if you can with the possibility to do more if you’d like to. However, we appreciate any time you’d like to give; please let us know this on your application form. All we ask is that you give the same hours each week and that you let us know as soon as you can if you’re not able to make it. This’ll help us to plan our week.
What support will I be given?
Before starting with Tenovus Cancer Care, we ask that you do try a small number of hours in the shop so we can both see how the role may suit you. The amount of hours can be decided between you and the Shop Manager.
Following that the Shop Manager and team will be on hand to run you through the basics of helping in a shop in your first few days and they’ll always be on hand after that.

Our shops in local communities are crucial to us raising vital funds. So, we’d like you to volunteer your time and commitment to help us make a difference.
We are looking for friendly volunteers who have a passion for homeware, collectibles and bric – a brac to help us out with our donations in our Charity shops. We aren’t looking for experts but if you have an interest in homeware that is useful.
What will I be doing?
Accepting donations from the public
Cleaning, researching and pricing goods
Putting goods on display in the shop
Displaying items on the shop floor ensuring the items are rotated regularly to increase sales
Maintaining high levels of shop standards, presentation and cleanliness
Speaking with customers, making them welcome and answering queries
Along with learning the role, you can branch out and try other roles too
Promoting awareness of the charity and the services that we provide

Description of role:
To support customers with higher needs and communication difficulties one-to-one in a group sessions.
Work alongside our Activities Facilitators to support the delivery of sessions.
Key tasks:
To work at the individual customer’s pace in a group, ensuring they can take part in sessions (for example cooking, baking, dance).
Help the individual customer communicate and interact with the team and their peers.
To help with confidence building by encouraging and empowering customer to engage, be creative and stay safe.
Ensure that the individual is included in various aspects of sessions, and during breaks and lunchtime.
Volunteers will not be engaged in “Regulated Activity” as defined by Schedule 4 to the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 (as amended). This includes assisting people with personal or health care, and undertaking activities with children that are not supervised by staff.
A DBS check will be required as part of this role and will be carried out during the vetting checks of successful applicants.

Unfold
We work with young people aged 10 – 25, and mothers with children aged 5+ offering one-to-one support from trained and supervised volunteer mentors, who empower our mentees to get to where they want to be, through achieving our aims of boosting Confidence, building lasting Independence and Connecting mentees with 1 or more organisation.
What will I be doing?
- You will be mentoring a Black or Brown person aged between 10 -25. We’ve seen the positive impact on young Black and Brown people when they have a mentor who they can relate to, who shares and understands their experience.
- Many of the young people we work with are at greater risk of experiencing exclusion as they are often referred to us from other supporting services and are of a low-income single parent family. The majority of young people we support are Black and Brown which further increases the likelihood of experiencing exclusion. Being a mentor who can relate to their experience as Black or Brown person you will support your mentee to help them to achieve and identify goals, supporting them to get to where they want to be. You will encouraging your mentee to consider future options, and assist them in achieving their goals, helping to navigate the barriers to inclusion.
- With the additional qualities of relatability and understanding, you will develop a trusting, supportive and non-judgemental relationship, by providing emotional, social and practical support to boost confidence and independence.
- You will support your mentee to make social connections with their local community, services or groups.
What impact will this have?
- You will contribute to making the voices of our Black and Brown Youth Advisory Council members, to not only be heard, but to be a reality. They told us that diversity in mentoring matters, and they want to see more of it. They felt that having mentors who look like them brings a different approach, relatability and understanding to their mentoring experience.
- With 9 out of 10 of the young people we work with saying that having a mentor has significantly improved their life, your skills and experiences are needed and will have a positive impact.
- We have a waiting list of young people looking for someone like you. You can be that someone in a young persons life that perhaps you wish you had, someone who can inspire, support and motivate a young person who looks like or identifies with you. All you need is time, commitment and your own experience of life, and we’ll help you with the rest.
Commitment
- We ask volunteers to commit to delivering mentoring1–2-hour a week, over a period of 24 sessions. Through mentee and mentor testimonies we have seen the positive impact holding sessions in person vs online has, and so we would ask any perspective volunteers to be prepared to be available for all in person sessions should this be the required need of your mentee.
- Attend monthly online group supervisions held weekday evenings. Supervisions are a great place to meet other mentors, share skills and ideas around mentoring, hear from organisation who can enhance your mentoring experience as well get support with the challenges you may face
Training
- Mentors are required to complete two stages of training as follows:. 1) Independent online training covering topics around safeguarding, confidentiality, the person-centred approach, the growth mindset, mentoring, inclusion, maintaining professional boundaries and more. 2) Coaching and Mentoring Live online training - delivered by our Programme Officers, givng you an opportunity to immerse yourself in the role of a mentor, by going into greater depth of the independent online modules, giving room for role play and discussion.
- Mentors have a designated Programme Officer, offering 1-2-1 support when you need it.
What else do I need to know?
- A DBS check is required
- In person sessions will take place near to where your mentee lives, within Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea boroughs.

The Men in Sheds Project: Is a project specifically for men aged 50+. It provides a well equipped workshop space where men can work together on a range of practical activities. We currently have ‘sheds’ in Blidworth, Nottingham, Daybrook and Worksop. The project aims to:
- encourage men to be more socially active
- give members an outlet for their skills and the opportunity to learn new skills
- provide a break amongst friends for older men who are carers
- give retired men the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the local community
- provide access to information and other local services Members are encouraged to take ownership of their ’shed’.
What impact does this role have? This role helps combat social isolation for men over the age of 50.
What activities might you be involved in?
• To unlock the shed and get it ready for use, heating, check for unsafe items of machines etc.
• Supervising workshop sessions, alongside another volunteer.
• Collect or oversee the payment of subscriptions, ensure that members book in on the attendance register
• Assist members if needed with projects, lifting etc.
• Agree with members in advance on the price of projects that members make
• Take payment for items when finished, issue a receipt and record the sale
• Encourage work that could be done to members, orders, seasonal items etc.
• Meet and greet visitors, ensure they comply with all safety requirements and to sign in
• Meet and greet potential new members, show them around the shed and briefly describe the aims and function of the shed. Arrange a meeting with a shed leader for induction if interested. Ensure they comply with all safety requirements and to sign in
• (With one other Volunteer or member) Count and record subscriptions & tea fund at the end of the day and put away in the safe
• You will be supported by a staff member from the Men in Sheds Team
• To check that everything is switched off, the ‘Red Button’ is pressed and to lock up at the end of the day
• Reporting any concerns to the Shed leader
What are we looking for?

o Ensure there is no smoking in the shed, only in the outside designated smoking area
o Stop other members from carrying out unsafe practices or report it to a Shed Leader immediately
o Actively contribute to keeping the shed clean and tidy
➢ Expected levels of conduct include:
o Treat members and fellow volunteers in a friendly and supportive approachable manner
o Not use rude, offensive, threatening or abusive behaviour, language or gestures
o If anybody is deemed under the influence they will be asked to leave the shed and not to return until sober
o Report any incidents or breach of any of the above to the Shed Leader in confidence
o Report any complaints about the project / charity in line with Age UK Notts’ Compliments and Complaints procedure
➢ Be able to cover a session either weekly or to provide cover on an ‘as needed’ basis.
Ability to work sensitively and confidentially with men from a variety of backgrounds.
➢ Willingness to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
We are looking for volunteers who can regularly commit to at least one session per week.
- The Daybrook Shed: Open Monday – Thursday, 9.00am – 12.00pm and 12.30pm - 3:30pm, and we are looking for volunteers on all days but particularly on a Thursday.
- The Worksop Shed: Open Monday - Wednesday: 9am - 2pm and we are looking for volunteers on all days.
- The Blidworth Shed: Open Tuesday 9am - 2pm & Thursday 9am - 1pm and will soon be opening on a Wednesday (9am until 2pm), and we are looking for volunteers on a Wednesday and a Thursday.
Days to be agreed with the shed.

General Adviser
What will you do?
● complete an introduction to Citizens Advice and training for your role
● talk to clients face to face to explore what problems they’ve come for help with
● find information about the clients’ problems and help them to understand their options
● support clients to take action to resolve their problems. This might include drafting or writing letters, making phone calls, or referring the client to another organisation
● write a summary of the clients’ problems and what action you’ve taken
● look out for problems’ that are common, or are unfair, and write a short report about the problem or a letter to an elected official like an MP, AM or local councillor

So, it really is a role where you’ll get loads of retail management experience.

What is the purpose of this role?
The Sutton in Ashfield Shop is part of the commercial / Income generation team.
This role is to support the work of the staff to maximise the income generated from the donations which provides the Charity with vital funds to run our services. The role involves volunteering both in the back shop behind the scenes and in the shop itself.
What impact does this role have?
This role helps the shop to run efficiently and effectively, and to sell products for Age UK Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, which in turn, generates funds to allow Age UK Notts to continue to run effective services for older people.
What activities might you be involved in?
Front of shop
- Engaging with our customers, in a friendly and welcoming way
- Ensuring customers experience excellent customer service
- Maintaining the look of the shop displays so that customers have a positive shopping experience
- Restocking shelves and rails as and when needed
- Maintaining a tidy clean and safe shopping / working environment
- Following appropriate till training, taking and processing payments from customers (including card payments).
- Signposting clients to our Connect Service
- Promoting Advantage Mobility products and services
- Accepting donations from supporters that visit the shop and encouraging those who are tax payers to sign up to Gift Aid in order to generate a further 25p in every £1 for the Charity.
Back Shop
- Accepting donations and ensuring that donations that have been Gift Aided are separated and clearly labelled with the correct Gift Aid number
- Sorting through donations to identify:
- items that can be sold in the shop,
- items that can be ragged or sold as scrap and
- items of higher value that need to be sold on elsewhere
- Labelling all saleable items with price tags and if appropriate Gift Aid numbers
- Steaming items of clothing and placing on appropriate hanger in preparation for sale
- Maintaining a clean, tidy and safe working environment.
- Use of the internet to share shop stock on Social Media.
- Volunteering in line with the Charity’s policies and procedures and adhering to the Volunteer Code of Conduct

When would you be needed to volunteer?
A minimum of either one morning or one afternoon. The shop is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10am until 4pm.

You don’t necessarily need prior experience of rail, but skills in Chairing meetings will be important. Some experience of committee or similar work, and a strong focus to cooperatively work with and shape the forward-looking Board are also useful qualities we are looking for.
Full induction to our organisation will be provided, plus specialist support as a new non-profit Director, including access to external training as needed.
