Learning & Development Manager 

Home - Based but within commutable distance to Methodist Districts within Wales Cymru, West Midlands & South West, or those in the South East.

The LN comprises 30+ staff working as part of a single team operating across the Methodist Church in Britain. The team is strategically and collaboratively managed by Learning and Development Managers (LDMs), each having responsibility for a number of Learning and Development Officers (LDO) working within a geographical area. We are seeking to recruit an LDM for appointment within the Cymru Wales, West Midlands and South West, or the South East Methodist Districts.

There is a requirement to live within this geography that includes the Methodist districts: Bedfordshire, Essex, & Hertfordshire, Bristol, Channel Islands, East Anglia, Lincolnshire, London, Northampton, Nottingham and Derby, Southampton, South East, South West Peninsular, Wales Synod Cymru, and West Midlands.

Responsibilities of the Learning Development Manager include:

• strategic shared leadership of the LN
• leading and managing the LDOs, balancing the needs and expectations of lay and ordained
• developing, implementing and reviewing, alongside other LDMs and the Director of Ministry Learning, the strategic work plan of the LN
• building and maintaining good relationships across the Connexional Team and with individuals and communities across the church and beyond
• encouraging the sharing of individual gifts and experiences across a number of teams and stakeholders
• travel (including overnight stays), weekend and evening work

We are looking for someone who has:

• proven experience of coordinating and managing a dispersed team of staff and volunteers
• significant experience and is passionate about learning and development
• a strong commitment to collaborative and partnership working
• a proven track record of meeting deadlines within a complex and varied workload

Knowledge of the Welsh language would be a valuable asset to this role

The media team strategically leads on both proactive and reactive media activity, engaging with journalists to support WaterAid’s mass engagement, partnerships, brand awareness and political influencing. 

As our Senior PR Manager, you will lead the public relations function for WaterAid and work closely with the three senior media officers you manage, to drive sustainable change.

In this role, you will:

• Lead on developing and delivering innovative integrated, digital first PR campaigns that achieve impactful national, international, local and digital coverage, to support our fundraising and public engagement activities, build WaterAid’s profile, and align with wider organisational aims 

• Manage our media around our high-profile strategic partnerships to deliver media projects that meet shared objectives and help our partners become influencers in their sector to drive change 

• Work with the Celebrity and Influencer team to develop effective ways to work with high-profile supporters to build awareness of WaterAid and our work 

• Act as a media spokesperson for WaterAid as required, briefing journalists on and off the record and giving media interviews where necessary 

• Provide professional advice and support to colleagues in the UK, including our Chief Executive and within the WaterAid federation involved in media relations work, and identify opportunities to coordinate media moments across the organisation 

• Manage reputational issues where appropriate in coordination with the Head of Media 

• Write and edit copy as required for print and web outlets 

• Monitor and evaluate coverage and the wider impacts of our media work to guide future strategies 
• Build and maintain relationships with key journalists and broadcasters including the planning and managing of trips to country programmes with journalists, celebrities or for content gathering 

• Join the 24/7 on-call rota and be prepared for travel in the UK and overseas - usually around two weeks per year - as well as some work outside normal office hours, as necessary

Requirements

To be successful, you will need:

• Experience of leading, managing and motivating others and driving change

Platform’s North Sea Workers’ Transition project is building towards a managed phase-out of oil and gas extraction in the UK North Sea. We’re organising for an energy industry that protects the rights and livelihoods of the current oil and gas workforce and directs wealth back to communities, especially those impacted by industrial change.

We have been working with offshore oil and gas workers and their unions for 5+ years. In 2023, we published a groundbreaking set of 10 demands for a just energy transition away from fossil fuels co-created with offshore workers: Our Power: offshore workers’ demands for a just energy transition. Since publishing the report we have launched public advocacy and media campaigns based on these demands - working alongside industrial trade unions, national and grassroots climate groups, and oil and gas workers. We coordinate a first-of-its-kind coalition of industrial unions and climate groups working together on national worker transition demands.

As living conditions continue to decline and the climate crisis deepens, we are looking for a motivated and creative campaigner, who is able to lead the next stage of the project, and who has a strong understanding of anti-oppression and energy justice.

About the role

The Worker Transition Campaigns Manager will work closely with our Worker Organiser and Public and Community Ownership Campaigner, supported by our Organising and Advocacy Lead, Research Lead and Communications Lead.

You will be responsible for strategising, project managing and delivering the project. Activities will look like:

• Coordinating an existing coalition of climate groups and trade unions, including holding relationships with a wide range of key stakeholders across movements;
• Developing and delivering political advocacy and public campaigns strategies to win Our Power demands - including public ownership of energy - at a UK and Scottish Government level;
• Supporting the work of Platform’s Worker Organiser(s) to build links with energy workers and involve them in media, political meetings and/or campaigning activities.

This post would sit within Platform’s internal collective management structure and would therefore be expected to support the collective management of the organisation in addition to finance and fundraising-related responsibilities. This includes line managing 1-2 staff members after the 6 month probation period and attending collective management meetings. 

Role Details

Hours: 4 days (32 hours) based on a 40 hour work week (5 x 8 hour days including a 1hr lunch break).

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the legal charity ATLEU (Anti Trafficking and Labour Exploitation Unit), in a vital operational leadership role.  This is a role for someone with extensive operational management experience, ideally within the charity, non-profit sector and in human rights work. You will be a strategic thinker with excellent organisational skills and able to manage multiple priorities effectively. You will bring your skills and experience to a dedicated team that punches well above its weight and is passionate about transforming individual lives and bringing about long term change. 

The Head of Operations will provide leadership in all operational matters, supporting the organisation's mission and long-term objectives, supporting ATLEU’s growth, resilience, and sustainability as well as building a flexible and supportive environment that enables the ATLEU team to do the challenging work that they do.

This role is line managed by and works closely with the Chief Executive. You will be a member of ATLEU’s Senior Management team and work closely with and supervise the work of the People & Inclusion Manager (recently started in post), the Operations & Projects Coordinator and the Billing Coordinator. The Operations team is a small team that works collaboratively to ensure all areas are covered at all times. As such, you will be willing to chip in and take on tasks of other team members if urgent matters arise or when providing holiday cover.

Objectives of the post

To lead and ensure the smooth operational running of ATLEU, with particular focus on finance, people, information technology and governance and compliance. 

To manage ATLEU’s team of operations staff including human resources, operations and projects,  finance and external bookkeepers. 

To work closely with the Chief Executive to develop systems for implementing and monitoring ATLEU’s strategic plan. 

Main Responsibilities

1. Leadership and Strategy

• Participate in strategic and business planning processes and play a leading role, working with the CEO and trustees to develop the strategic plan, ensuring all team members understand it and their role in it. 
• Serve as a key member of the Senior Management Team (SMT) contributing to the strategic direction and day to day management of the organisation. 
• Develop and lead monitoring and evaluation processes for all activities associated with our strategy, including setting and reviewing annual business plan priorities and targets, communicating progress and highlighting potential areas for development and increased focus. Be a champion for embedding learning into the culture of the organisation and collaborate with consultants and staff to ensure there are effective monitoring learning and evaluation frameworks in place across ATLEU’s projects and services. 
• Lead and manage ATLEU’s operations staff, including ATLEU’s Operations and Projects Coordinator, People and Inclusion Manager and Billing Coordinator. 
• Lead the development and maintenance of organisational policies, procedures, and systems to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
• To work closely with the Director of Saltworks to support the operational running of ATLEU’s  trading subsidiary Saltworks, through developing the financial and operational infrastructure and management of the organisation.

2. Finance 

• Lead ATLEU’s financial planning, management and reporting processes. 
• Direct, manage and document ATLEU’s financial policies, systems and controls, ensuring that financial systems are effective and up to date. 
• Scrutinise monthly financial data and produce financial reports for the CEO and trustees, including quarterly cashflows
• Prepare ATLEU’s annual operating budgets and financial reports for funders and oversee project budgets. 
• Ensure the year-end financial accounts and audit process is completed satisfactorily and delivered on time, ensuring all financial data and other data needed is provided.
• Ensure that accurate records and accounts of monies claimed are held on all cases  and liaise with the Head of Legal Practice to ensure compliance with the Solicitors Accounts Rules.
• Oversee ATLEU’s bookkeeping and legal aid billing and reporting and ensure all monies, including grant monies and training invoices are claimed and paid promptly. 
• Maintain oversight of bookkeepers and auditors, taking responsibility for managing relationships with them
• Manage ATLEU’s banking arrangements, ensuring that they are effective, secure and fit for purpose.

3. Office and Operations

• Work with the Senior Management and Operations teams to ensure that all colleagues have the operational support needed to do their jobs effectively; 
• Liaise with building management for both offices, manage any rent negotiations and any future office moves 

• Lead on the annual insurance renewal process, provide the required data and lead discussions with brokers to ensure good value for money on all policies;
• Support the Operations and Projects Coordinator to ensure that both ATLEU offices provide a safe and welcoming environment for ATLEU staff, clients and other visitors and that they comply with all appropriate legislation and regulations;
• Work with the Operations & Project Coordinator to maintain the Office Manual and associated policies and ensure that they are up to date and reviewed as appropriate and monitor compliance with those policies. 
• Oversee day-to-day operations including premises, equipment, IT systems, ordering supplies, procurement and workflow and archive management and ensure that processes are in place to restore functionality as required. 
• To ensure the most effective use of resources and identify areas for cost reduction or cost avoidance along with process and functional improvement, including developing ATLEU’s IT infrastructure to reduce reliance on paper files. 

4. Human Resources

• The Head of Operations plays a pivotal role in mentoring and supporting the People and Inclusion Manager across all HR-related matters, including staff wellbeing and EDI activities. 
• In the absence of the People & Inclusion Manager or when facing conflicting deadlines, the Head of Operations is expected to actively participate in all HR tasks.
• Support the People & Inclusion Manager with day-to-day HR tasks, processes and systems, responding to queries and problem solving when needed;
• Provide guidance to the Senior Management Team with regular updates on HR related issues as needed;
• Support the People and Inclusion Manager to review, develop and roll out HR policies and provide training to staff where required, ensuring they are legislatively sound, fit with our values and align with our strategic goals. 
• Oversee the coordination of the organisation’s volunteer programme, and explore ways to maximise the value both ATLEU and volunteers gain from the programme. 
• Model positive, fair and open people leadership and support other managers in their supervisory capacity.

5. Governance and Compliance 

• Work with the Chief Executive to continue to strengthen the governance of the charity, ensuring that all aspects of governance adhere to best practices and meet regulatory requirements.

• Ensure that ATLEU complies with the requirements of all relevant regulatory bodies including the Charity Commission and Companies House and ensuring ATLEU is compliant with all compliance relevant to a not for profit legal firm e.g the Legal Aid Agency, Solicitor’s Regulation Authority, Specialist Quality Mark, Immigration Advice Authority and CILEX.

• Manage the Board, AGM and committee meeting calendar, ensuring well-structured agendas and facilitating effective decision-making processes with clear records of these meetings and management of actions arising.
• Develop and implement governance policies and procedures that align with regulatory requirements and organisational needs.
• Ensure the SMT, Board and other parts of the governance receives comprehensive, timely, and accurate information to support informed decision-making.
• Stay abreast of relevant legislation and governance best practices, implementing changes as necessary. 
• Develop and maintain effective systems and frameworks for compliance, risk management, and operational efficiency.

6. Information Technology / Data Protection and Cyber Security

• Support the Operations and Projects Coordinator in ensuring IT systems function appropriately and securely and new systems are developed to improve efficiencies for caseworkers and for audit and research. 
• Work with the Head of Legal Practice and Operations and Projects Coordinator on the continued development of and improvements to our legal aid case management system.
• Ensure ATLEU has robust IT and cyber security policies and procedures in place, and oversee their implementation across the organisation.
• Develop and maintain the organisation’s IT and business continuity plan and update it annually.
• Oversee ATLEU’s day-to-day relationships with external IT support, ensuring IT systems function effectively and providing or facilitating staff support;
• Collaborate with external IT support on projects to enhance and modernise ATLEU’s systems, ensuring they remain up-to-date and secure;

• Take overall responsibility for the data protection obligations of the organisation. Oversee the implementation of up-to-date and compliant data protection policies including data retention and destruction, home and remote working, emails and the internet, and ensure that sensitive and financial information is securely stored and confidentiality and privacy is maintained. 
• Keep abreast of changes and updates to Data Protection legislation and ensure that staff receive regular training on Data Protection and Cyber Security.

7. Other

• Lead by example demonstrating ATLEU’s values, taking a business partner, proactive approach to working across the organisation.

Entry level Health and Safety qualification or working towards this is essential along with up-to-date knowledge of current legislation and experience of carrying out assessments. 

Key Skills and Attributes:  

• Practical experience of a broad range of facilities work, including Hard and Soft Facilities matters across multiple sites. 

• Management of third parties’ contractors hired to complete facilities tasks, using method statements, risk assessments and a permit to work scheme. 

• Proven experience of improving supplier value through contract review, market research and contract negotiation 

• Entry level Health and Safety qualification (IOSH Managing Safely Certificate or similar) and working towards NEBOSH qualification, with up-to-date knowledge of current legislation and experience of carrying out Risk Assessments, DSE Assessments, etc.

Title: Welfare and Housing Adviser

Hours: 35 hours per week

Salary: £29,000 to £34,000 FT (depending on experience and qualifications)

Based: Haringey borough (outreach venues including Hornsey, N8 9LP), Willesden, NW10 2JR + other locations if required

JOB OVERVIEW

If so, this is an exciting opportunity for you to take the next step in your career by joining the Brent Irish Advisory Service (BIAS) as our Welfare and Housing Adviser for Haringey borough.

BIAS’s welfare and housing advice service supports members of the local Irish community and beyond with a range of complex issues, including disability benefits, pensions, Universal Credit, Irish passports, homelessness, rehousing, tenancy sustainment and disrepair. We are looking to appoint a dynamic, enthusiastic person who has a background or demonstrable interest in advice, welfare or housing to join our friendly advice team. Your role will involve contributing to the establishment, expansion and day-to-day running of BIAS’s advice service in Haringey borough, providing specialist advice on welfare and housing via one-to-one client appointments, completing casework and advocating for positive outcomes for your clients.

You will need to have strong people skills and the ability to build good working relationships with colleagues, clients and partners, an aptitude for working independently, excellent organisational skills and the ability to digest complex briefs. You will be required to manage an active caseload, ensuring that cases are appropriately actioned and recorded and that deadlines are met. You will work with the Advice Services Manager to build and develop the new advice service in Haringey, ensuring that we replicate our excellent quality of service, strong record of positive outcomes and loyal client base.

KEY WORK AREAS AND MAIN DUTIES

• Providing appropriate advice, information and practical help to clients via in-person appointments, outreach visits, telephone, letter or email. Where necessary, advocating on behalf of clients in the appropriate forums.
• Ensuring that all casework records are kept up to date and completed clearly and effectively.
• Contributing to monitoring service delivery and recording client outcomes.
• Maintaining a good knowledge of other available services, and signposting or referring clients as needed.
• Participating in regular team file reviews and supervision sessions, and contributing to maintaining BIAS’s high-quality service in line with Advice Quality Standard (AQS) requirements. 
• Engaging positively and constructively with other service providers, including local authorities and housing providers, to maintain partnerships.
• Staying up to date with developments in welfare benefits and housing legislation and identifying opportunities to effect positive policy change, together with the Advice Services Manager.

These are the basic duties required of the Welfare and Housing Adviser. However, it is necessary for all staff to be flexible and you may be required from time to time to perform other reasonable duties which are required for the efficient running of the organisation. We will also offer training opportunities to support your career development.

Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK. This role will be based in our advice venues in  Haringey[1], with some presence required at our main office in Willesden and some options for flexible working (i.e. one or two days per week).

[1] BIAS is currently running its Haringey advice services from the Hornsey Vale Community Centre, with plans to expand into additional venues in the borough later in 2025.

We deliver our support through our welfare advice drop-in service, our active ageing clubs and our Be-a-Friend volunteer scheme. We raise over £2 million in extra income for the most vulnerable every year and have over 3000 attendances at our club services. BIAS has exciting plans for further expansion and has a range of medium- to long-term grant funding, including from Ireland’s Emigrant Support Programme.
