Job description

This is an opportunity to join the board of a small Housing Association operating in Birmingham. The Association provides general needs housing at social rents for people in need. 

What will you be doing?

You will be a trustee and member of the Board of Management of the association. 

The Board sets direction and ensures compliance with the values, mission and strategic objectives of the Association. The Board is accountable to the Regulator of Social Housing. 

We are seeking new board members with experience in property / asset management, preferably in the social housing sector to help us deliver our strategic objectives: 

  • Provide high quality homes and services that meet the needs and aspirations of our tenants. 
  • Invest in the quality, safety and environmental sustainability of our homes. 
  • Demonstrate high standards of governance and business effectiveness to maintain a sound financial position and comply with relevant laws and regulations.  

The Board of Management meets five times a year plus additional training as and when required. We prefer board members to attend meetings in person but electronic attendance can be arranged when necessary. This is a volunteer role. 

Induction will be arranged for new members. 

No previous experience as a board member is required, however, on this occasion we are seeking candidates with professional experience in property/asset management, preferably in the social housing sector.

What are we looking for?

You will have professional experience in property/ asset management, preferably in the social housing sector and a good understanding of the statutory and regulatory duties of social landlords relating to building safety.  In addition you will have the following skills and abilities: 

  • be able to work effectively as a team member
  • be able to think strategically 
  • be able to understand and represent the interests of tenants
  • respect diversity and value difference
  • believe in the values and mission of the association 
  • be able to act as a critical friend, having the confidence to ask questions constructively and challenge   when appropriate
  • understand the environment that the association operates in

Knowledge of the regulatory framework for social housing is desirable.
