The Listening Place is a volunteer-led charity aiming to transform how we support people who feel suicidal.  Our trained volunteers are part of a team delivering face-to-face, confidential, ongoing support to thousands of people each year.  They help create the warm and welcoming environment that encourages people struggling with suicidal thoughts and feelings to talk openly without being judged or given advice.   

Helping Volunteers are responsible for welcoming visitors onto our premises, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere (along with a cup of tea), and supporting our Listening Volunteers to help everything run smoothly.

We are looking for volunteers who have the empathy to greet distressed visitors, the willingness to undertake a variety of admin and other tasks and the resilience to support their team.  Our HVs need to be proactive, self-starters and team players with a basic understanding of IT. We ask for a weekly commitment of four hours for a period of at least six months.

We are primarily recruiting Helping Volunteers for our Hammersmith and Liverpool Street sites.

The English class is a part of the Creative Arts and Skills Programme (CASP). It is a safe space for clients to improve their English at their own pace, making friends and immersing themselves in learning to forget some of their daily challenges, whilst being continuously supported by our team of dedicated staff and volunteers throughout their journey.

This weekly English class is a relaxed and friendly space for clients of all language and literacy abilities to practice their English together and develop the confidence to later enrol in a formal college ESOL course. While this class is mostly for beginners, it is also attended by clients who are less comfortable in busy environments and would prefer to learn or improve their English in a smaller group. Some clients are already in college and use this space for extra practice.

We are looking for two volunteers to facilitate this class. The volunteers will work together to develop new class material, and will alternate fortnightly as the main teacher and the support teacher.

Main tasks and activities

• Plan, prepare and deliver high quality English language teaching that meets the differing needs of our clients, taking into account individual learning styles
• Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to each student throughout the term
• Take part in education and training events or schemes as required by the programme
• Keep accurate and timely registers, plus records of travel and other expenses
• Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of the English class, in order to meet learners' needs by actively working as a member of the CASP at HBF
• Keep in contact with the Community and Integration Manager and report any concerns around client wellbeing, following safeguarding procedures when needed

Skills and experience needed

• Understanding of, and commitment to, the objectives of the Helen Bamber Foundation;
• A demonstrable empathy for our vulnerable clients, including asylum seekers, refugees and survivors of torture and trafficking;
• An understanding of the challenges facing our client group;
• Punctual, reliable and self-motivated with a positive, ’can-do’ attitude;
• Hold a Basic ESOL Subject Specialist qualification (e.g. TEFL, CELTA, university degree);
• Proven experience of teaching as an ESOL/EFL teacher ;
• Experience of informal and community education;
• Experience working with vulnerable people;
• Strong facilitation skills with a focus on inclusivity and community-building
• Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage own time and workload, and to prioritise a range of competing demands;

Following the success of the 2025 Council Climate Action Scorecards last year, Climate Emergency UK is looking to create the third edition of the Action Scorecards. Analysing council climate action only becomes valuable if you track the progress that has been made. Therefore, we are looking for volunteers to assist us in managing the Freedom of Information (FOI) requests we are sending to councils to answer some of the Scorecard questions.

Why are we doing this?

We’re in a climate and ecological crisis and local councils have the power and influence over around 30% of emissions in their local area. Councils are uniquely placed to make a real impact on emissions within their area. We know that councils are listening to the Scorecards results and taking more effective action. The average score in the 2025 Action Scorecards increased by 7 percent points. The Scorecards are a campaigning tool that residents can use to hold their council to account on their climate action, and lobby for specific, targeted change. We have also found evidence of 34% councils using and referencing the Scorecards in committee meetings, reports or in their own press releases and organisations across the sector are utilising the data from the Scorecards as well. Finally, this UK wide assessment will demonstrate where the UK and devolved governments need to provide more support to local authorities in order for them to take even further action.

How can you help?

We need at least 200 volunteers to pull this project off! We are sending councils a small number of FOI requests in order to answer some of the Scorecard questions. We have already written the FOI requests, and we need volunteers to manage the FOI request responses from all 400 councils and input their answers into our Scorecards. 

What experience do I need?

We will provide training so you don’t need any experience. If you have previous experience of sending FOI requests using WhatDoTheyKnow or reading responses to FOI requests that would be useful but not necessary in order to apply.

What will I gain?

This is a great opportunity if you want to work with FOI/EIR requests in the future. As you’ll be processing a variety of FOI requests from different council types across the UK, you will gain a deep understanding of the FOI request process and strengthen your analytical skills as you read and interpret the responses. By helping with this project you will be making a real contribution to the fight against the climate crisis.

What we need from you

You will need to be available to attend the following sessions:

• Volunteer induction
  You will only need to attend an induction session on either Tuesday 19th May or Thursday 21st May 2026.

• FOI Training
  You will need to attend the training session on 26th May 2026 from 5:30-7:30pm.

Scorecard FOI requests volunteers will be carrying out crucial tasks to manage the thousands of FOI responses we will be submitting. Using WhatDoTheyKnow you will be logging whether a council has responded to an FOI request and extracting the answers to create a data set of answers that will be used to mark councils in the Scorecards. Every volunteer will be trained and supported to manage the FOI responses.

Each FOI request will take between 10-30 minutes to classify and extract responses and the more you do, the quicker you will become. This can be done flexibly according to your scheduling needs. Our core FOI volunteers should be able to give 10 hours per week for 5 weeks between 25th May 2026 and 19th June 2026. You will need access to a laptop or computer with good internet for this volunteer position in order to access WhatDoTheyKnow.

Note: We will not accept current Councillors or Officers (Parish/Town councillors/officers are free to apply). 

How it works

• You will receive training on how to use WhatDoTheyKnow and manage the FOI responses.

• You will use WhatDoTheyKnow Projects to first classify and then extract information from FOI requests as we receive responses from councils across the country. 

• You will be supported through online communication with other volunteers across the country.

• You will be supported on Slack so at any point you will be able to ask questions of CE UK staff and other volunteers. There will also be an optional weekly FOI team co-working session, where you can work with CE UK staff and other volunteers, ask questions and get to know the other volunteers.

Unfortunately, thousands of cats each year are abandoned or have strayed and rely on charities like Cats Protection for help. Becoming a trap, neuter and return (TNR) volunteer is one way you can make a real difference to cats in your local area. Our TNR volunteers help reduce the number of feral cats by raising awareness of our TNR programmes, setting humane traps to safely capture cats, taking them to local vets to be neutered, and hopefully returning them back to their territory. We are seeking a proactive and organised Appointments Admin Volunteer to support the Appointments Lead of client appointments across the Helen Bamber Foundation. This role will play an important part in supporting the smooth running of appointment scheduling, improving communication with clients, and helping to reduce missed appointments. You will work closely with the Client Services team and wider multidisciplinary teams to support effective appointment management.

Main tasks and activities

Appointments Coordination

· Support the scheduling and coordination of client appointments, including Initial Assessments and follow-ups

· Liaise with staff, clinicians, and relevant teams to assist in organising appointment availability and ensuring effective use of appointment slots

· Assist in contacting clients via phone, email, or text (including WhatsApp where appropriate) to confirm appointments and provide reminders

· Support the updating and maintenance of appointment trackers, spreadsheets, and shared calendars to ensure accuracy and consistency

· Help ensure client contact details are accurate and regularly updated on internal systems

· Assist in the booking, rescheduling, and cancellation of appointments, ensuring all changes are communicated clearly to relevant parties

· Support the preparation and coordination of virtual appointments, including setting up and sharing meeting links (e.g. Teams, Zoom)

Data & Administration

· Support accurate and timely record keeping within the Client Management System (CMS), ensuring all appointment-related information is recorded correctly.

· Assist with maintaining and updating spreadsheets, appointment trackers, and internal databases to ensure data is current and reliable

· Support the team in monitoring data quality and flagging any inconsistencies or missing information

Interpreter Coordination

· Assist with booking interpreters for appointments where required, ensuring requests are communicated in a timely manner

· Support maintaining accurate and up-to-date interpreter contact lists and availability records

· Assist in confirming interpreter bookings and sharing relevant appointment details where appropriate

General Support

· Provide support to the Client Services and Operations team as needed

· Assist with reception cover where required

Street Storage is a new, ambitious and innovative homelessness charity. The first of its kind in the U.K., we provide free, accessible storage for people experiencing homelessness. Founded in 2019, we have grown exponentially and have developed a strong reputation in the sector and the homelessness community. 

Title: Unit Volunteer

Reporting To: Service Manager

Principle Function: To aid the team in managing people’s storage in the service. 

Expenses: For travel as necessary. Normally agreed in advance.

Wednesday: 12:30 - 16:30 - regular

Duration: Ongoing, with at least a 6-month commitment.

Description: The role of Unit Volunteer will be to support the Referrals and Storage Coordinator in the running of the drop in service, including the following:

• Storing and retrieving luggage, including tagging people's luggage when they first come in and recording taken and added folder.

• Support the service’s efforts to maintain a clean and organised space for people who use the service and staff alike.

• Ensure that all individuals are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Skills and/or qualifications and experience required: 

• Ability to recognise and respond calmly to tense or escalating situations, using effective de-escalation techniques to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone.

• Passion for the service and empathy for those who use it

• Previous sector volunteering is desirable but not required

Training required and support offered: 

• Street Storage induction and training (including information provided on the history and mission of the charity/the service we provide/aims/objectives

• You will receive  support throughout your volunteering with the service.

• We will aim to provide group Ian Bourne Aggressive Behaviour Training to develop skills working with and for a vulnerable client group

• Volunteer supervisions every two months.
