Gulab Sorkh Foundation (GSF) is an independent charity supporting Afghan nationals resettled in the UK under the ARAP scheme. We are a small but impactful organisation, dedicated to helping those who worked closely with British forces in Afghanistan and their families integrate successfully into British life.
Job description
We are looking for two volunteer interpreters—one fluent in Dari and one fluent in Pashto — to join our team at the Gulab Sorkh Foundation (GSF). You will play a key role in supporting Afghan refugees who have resettled in the UK, assisting them in accessing essential services and communicating effectively in their daily lives. This is an influential volunteer opportunity where you will make a real difference by helping Afghan refugees integrate into British society, providing crucial interpretation during interactions with service providers such as healthcare professionals, housing officers, and legal advisors.
As a Volunteer Interpreter, you will:
- Provide interpretation services (Dari or Pashto) to Afghan refugees, ensuring clear
- communication between them and various UK service providers.
- Assist refugees in understanding key information related to housing, healthcare,
- education, and other public services.
- Facilitate communication during meetings, appointments, and community events to
- support their integration journey.
- Offer support and cultural understanding to ensure refugees feel comfortable and
- respected throughout their resettlement process.
Key responsibilities:
- Interpret accurately and sensitively between Dari/Pashto and English during one-on-one
- and group interactions.
- Help beneficiaries understand and complete necessary paperwork or official forms in
- both languages.
- Collaborate with case managers and external partners to ensure the refugees’ needs are
- effectively communicated.
- Be aware of and sensitive to the needs of individuals who may have experienced trauma
- and displacement.
- Follow data protection laws and policies
Essential skills:
- Fluency (written and verbal) in Dari and/or Pashto and in English.
- A high level of cultural sensitivity and empathy towards Afghan refugees.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information clearly
- and accurately.
- Ability to remain neutral and impartial in all interactions.
- Commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals and confidentiality.
Desirable skills:
- Level 3 in Interpretation.
- Previous experience working with refugees or vulnerable communities.
- Knowledge of UK systems such as healthcare, housing, and immigration.
- Understanding of the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) scheme.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Our Port Talbot shop, located in the Aberafan Shopping Centre, is one of our two outlet-style shops.
It offers a mix of full-priced items and mainly clearance stock from our other stores, ensuring we maximise income from all donations.
The management team spearhead a dedicated team of volunteers who manage a significant turnover of stock weekly.
The team relishes any opportunity to dress up and are often seen in a variety of fancy-dress costumes.
Considerations:
Age requirement: 16+
Location:Unit 28 Aberafan Shopping Centre, Port Talbot SA13 1PB
Commitment:Our shops operate Monday-Sunday, 9am-5pm and we appreciate any time you can spare, but ideally at least 2 hours per week.

Background checks: We will ask you to provide us with the details of two referees.
We are also looking for volunteers with a knowledge of jewellery and books.
Activities include:

Do you want to be inspired by the impact of education? Schools across Portsmouth are looking for skilled volunteers to support education by becoming school governors.
What will you be doing?
Governing bodies are responsible for the strategic management of a school and will make decisions about a wide range of issues
The core responsibilities involved are:
- Ensuring accountability
- Providing support and challenge to the schools senior leadership team
- Monitoring and evaluating the school’s progress
- Budgetary allocation and control
- Shaping plans for school improvement and overseeing their implementation
- Setting the school’s aims and values
- Appointing senior members of staff including the Head Teacher
The governing body is usually split in to a small number of committees, each responsible for one area such as finance or pupil achievement. These committees will meet separately from the main governing body to discuss relevant issues in more detail. Discussion is then fed back at a full governing body meeting.
A school governing body is made up of representatives from the school, the parents, the local authority and the local community.
What are we looking for?
You don’t need any specific skills or experience to be a school governor. You must be over 18, but you don’t need to be a parent or have experience working in education. Often, it’s the outside perspective you can bring that a school needs.
Professional experience in areas such as HR, finance, law, or project management are all useful to a school. But soft skills such as leadership, communication, and problem solving are also great additions.
What difference will you make?
Governors make decisions that affect schools for years to come. Our recent impact survey found that our volunteers bring £9.9 million worth of value to schools each year, and 9/10 volunteers would recommend being a governor to a friend.
As a governor, you can visit the school to gain an understanding of the culture and ethos and to get the most out of the role. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet children, parents, and teachers, and see the impact of your work first-hand.

About Ranger Cadets:
Ranger Cadets is a new uniformed youth work organisation dedicated to equipping young people with essential life skills, tools, and opportunities to become active citizens who make a positive contribution to society. Through training, service, and ceremonial identity, cadets grow in confidence, resilience, and pride—building a legacy of community impact.
Your Mission:

Command with dignity: Manage at least two cadet units, ensuring weekly training and ceremonial excellence.

Mentor with purpose: Support the training and shadowing of new volunteers, guiding them into the Ranger Cadets tradition. Especially Officers In Charge of Cadet Units (Cadet Unit Managers), giving your advice and experience.

Inspire with vision: Shape the future of young people through leadership, service, and community engagement.
Your Path to Advancement:
After 12 months of service, you’ll have the opportunity to rise in rank to Area Manager (Area Officer). In this role, you will:

Lead a group of cadet units.

Support, guide, and empower Cadet Unit Managers (Officers in Charge).

Carry forward the ceremonial identity and community mission of Ranger Cadets.
