Volunteering in the shop

Our Stockton Heath Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

Create Hope is a therapeutic service that provides emotional and mental health support to children, young people, and families. Our goal is to offer a safe space where individuals can explore their feelings, build resilience, and self-awareness through creative and relational approaches.

Our therapeutic services include:
● Play & Creative Therapy
● Systemic Family Therapy
● Person-Centred or Integrative Adult Counselling
● NVR Therapy
● Couples Therapy
● Workshops for parents/carers

As a Volunteer Parent/Carer Support, you contribute to this mission by offering a listening ear and compassionate presence in the waiting room.

Your Role as Volunteer Parent/Carer Support

Responsibilities:
● Greet parents/carers on arrival and help them feel comfortable in the waiting area
● Offer informal conversation and a compassionate listening ear
● Maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries at all times
● Signpost parents to Create Hope resources or staff when appropriate
● Help create a calm and welcoming atmosphere in the waiting space

Time Commitment:
We ask that volunteers commit to a regular weekly or fortnightly slot during therapy session times (usually weekday afternoons/evenings).

Location:
At the Create Hope centre in Bracknell.

Support & Training

We want to ensure you feel equipped and supported in your role. As a Parent/Carer Support Volunteer, you will have access to:
● Induction and training in listening skills and safe boundaries
● Safeguarding training (minimum Level 1)
● Ongoing supervision and support from the Create Hope team
● Being part of a supportive and welcoming volunteer community

You will not be expected to provide counselling – your role is to listen and be present. If a parent requires further support, you can signpost them to Create Hope staff.

Learn to Love to Read offers one-to-one support to children who find learning to read challenging, in schools and online via Zoom.Our In-school volunteers are asked to commit 90 minutes, one afternoon a week, usually between 1-3 pm.
Our virtual volunteers are asked to commit 30-60 minutes, one afternoon a week, usually between 4-6 pm.

Full training and ongoing support is provided for all volunteers to provide them with a framework which supports children's reading skills, while also building their self-esteem, confidence and love of reading. Our volunteers support the same children each week, providing 20 minutes of one-to-one support for the whole academic year. This ensures a consistent and rewarding experience for both the volunteer and the children.

In Wandsworth, post-COVID, 20% of Key Stage 1 and 25% of Key Stage 2 children did not reach the expected standard of reading in summer 2025. Low literacy is linked to poverty and social exclusion, limiting options in life. Early literacy intervention is crucial to break this cycle. School closures due to COVID-19 have been tough for children from disadvantaged families.
 

Please note we only work with schools in the London borough of Wandsworth and all our volunteers need to live in or within easy reach of that borough. 

In line with Safer Recruitment, all applicants are asked to complete an application form, provide references, take part in a face-to-face interview and ID check, and attend online training which includes safeguarding. All volunteers must have an enhanced DBS check which we arrange on your behalf. You will also be required to obtain checks from any country in which you've lived for more than three months from the age of 16 in line with Wandsworth's guidance. Once you have registered, we’ll send you a link to the application form.

At Childline we are actively recruiting new Volunteers. 

What will I be doing?

• Your shift will consist of 3hrs30mns counselling, sandwiched between a 15mns brief before your shift and a 30mns debrief post shift. This is to ensure that you can start and finish your shift with any support you require from your Practitioners.
• On shift you will take contacts from Young People who rely on the service that Childline offers. Childline is not there to solve problems, we are a listening service for Young People and in each contact your role is to engage the Young Person, explore their situation and to support them in deciding their next steps.
• The contacts you would take from Young People can come in 3 ways. Traditional phone call contacts, live chats via instant response typed messaging or less commonly via 'PIBS' which are essentially emails sent by Young People in the knowledge the response will not be 'live' and instant.

What impact will this have?

• Childline is a unique service, valued greatly by the Young People who contact us.
• It provides a safe place for Young People to talk confidentially to our Volunteer Counsellors, an option that many of them do not have elsewhere.
• Young People rely on us being there for them 24/7. In an average month, Childline London takes approx. 1,500 live chats, 900 voice calls and 300 PIBs.
• However, the demand for the service often outstrips the supply as Young People who desperately need our service cannot always get through.
• That is why we are actively recruiting new Volunteers to be able to meet the need of all Young People who are in distress and need the support that Childline provides.

Training

• Childline offers a full 12 week online training programme to new Volunteers. This consists of one 4 hour session per week.
• During the training, you will meet other Volunteers in your cohort and have access to your 2 dedicated Childline Trainers.
• As part of the training, you will also go in person to the London Base for observation and mentored shifts which give you a face to face insight into how the Counselling Room works.
• You will also have access to a dedicated Volunteer Engagement Lead to give you a London Base tour (optional) and generally be on hand to answer any questions or queries you may have - big or small, if they matter to you they matter because you are giving your time to volunteer and Childline wants to offer you every level of support.
• Once you pass through training and become a qualified Childline Volunteer Counsellor, the development opportunities do not stop there. You will have access to a multitude of mandatory and optional training courses that are accredited and 100% free to all Volunteers.

As Volunteer Admin Support, you play a key role in enabling these services to happen smoothly by ensuring the background systems and processes are managed well.

Your Role as Volunteer Admin Support

● Updating and maintaining client and referral information on Salesforce (training provided)
● Preparing and sending standard emails, agreements, and communication
● Assisting with filing, scanning, and organising paperwork
● Supporting with data entry and record-keeping for monitoring and evaluation
● Helping prepare resources and materials for therapy sessions or events
● Ensuring all records are handled securely and in line with confidentiality requirements

Time Commitment:
We ask that volunteers offer a regular commitment of a few hours each week. This can be flexible and, in some cases, carried out from home.

Location:
Tasks may take place at our Bracknell office or remotely, depending on the type of support being given.

Support & Training

After successfuly completing our aplciation, vetting and training process ARCh Reading Helpers visit a local primary school (close to home or workplace) twice a week during the school day (usually early afternoons), spending a 1:1 "happy half hour" each time with three children selected by the school.  These children may be struggling with reading, lack language skills or have little confidence.  The volunteer talks with the child, shares books and plays games supplied by ARCh.  In this way a mentoring relationship is developed over the course of a year.

Volunteers provide a warm, positive experience of reading and with encouragement over a sustained period, reluctant readers gain confidence in their ability and begin to read for pleasure.  This one to one support has a positive effect on all areas of the child''s schoolwork and improves their life prospects.

We need volunteers who can be relied upon to attend their sessions regularly and volunteer with ARCh for a minimum of one school year.

This role would appeal to anyone who enjoys being with children, loves books and wants to make a difference in their local community.

Skills and experiences we seek

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need any retail or shop experience as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and to follow our policies as well as be an excellent representative for Save the Children. 

We know that our shop teams are stronger when they are inclusive and representative of their communities. Everybody can make a real difference. People come to us for all sorts of reasons, from all backgrounds, and we will do what we can to find a role that works for you.

What happens next?

After you’ve filled in an application, we will invite you for an informal trial shift. It’s a great opportunity to visit the shop, meet some of our existing volunteers and have a go at some of the tasks that you would be supporting with as a shop volunteer. Hopefully allowing you to get a feel for the role and make sure it’s for you. We also ask for a couple of references (these don’t have to be formal workplace ones, just someone who has known you for over 6 months and isn’t related).

About The Role

Why do we need you?

At WWT, we believe that the best way for people to understand and ‘connect’ with wetlands is to experience them, so we bring awe-inspiring nature up close.You will be directly involved in shaping children’s unforgettable experiences through the warm welcome you give them, your interactions with them and the information that you provide. We need enthusiastic people to help deliver our education programmes to school groups and in doing so ensure that they feel part of something amazing.

What will you be doing?

·Helping out with school groups as appropriate, bringing their science curriculum to life

·Engaging pupils in the natural world and helping to foster a love of the outdoors and wetland habitats

·Interacting with children in a sensitive and responsive manner

·Working as part of a small and friendly team, you will be supported in gaining any essential training for the role

·You will learn lots of new and transferrable skills. No two days are ever the same!

·You'll be making a tangible contribution to wetland conservation by inspiring the next generation to care for our planet

Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team. You'll get a warm welcome, including information on training, equipment and anything else you need.

The role will suit you if:

·You have experience in an educational setting (though not essential)

·You are able to work well in a team of staff and volunteers

·You are able to communicate well with a diverse range of audiences

·You are familiar with Washington Wetland Centre - this would be an advantage during the initial stages

·You have a love of the outdoors and enjoy engaging with children
