Our Mission

Brain tumours do not discriminate, and they do not respect boundaries. They can strike anyone, at any age. And they strike quickly.

The Scottish Steering Committee (SSC) is our voluntary group who drive policy, campaigning and influencing work in Scotland, with the support of The Charity. It aims to represent the views of the community in Scotland and be a solution orientated advisory board to help achieve agreed objectives.

An ambitious and dedicated group, members previously agreed that the key objective of the Committee would be to campaign for a faster diagnosis for those affected by a brain tumour. Their aim is to achieve this through influencing, supporting and campaigning to improve all aspects of the diagnostic journey. Two years after setting this objective, as per the Committee’s terms of reference, we are now seeking new members to join and advocate for change in Scotland.

How can you help?

To achieve these ambitions – the Committee is now seeking five new members with particular experiences and skill sets that can help drive and enable the Committee to achieve its ambitions.

Your experience and skills will provide valuable input during SSC meetings but won’t be limited to just that – you can actively engage with stakeholders across Scotland and the wider UK, contribute to the creation of our policy positions in Scotland and raise the voice of the community across Scotland and beyond.

What impact will you have?

You will be a core member of a group that is seeking to improve outcomes for all those affected by brain tumours in Scotland.

We’re looking for...

People with experiences, knowledge and skills that can actively contribute to the operation of the SSC. This includes but is not limited to:

• Experience of being personally affected by a brain tumour in Scotland

• Clinician who is involved with brain tumours in some capacity

• Experience of working within Scottish Public Affairs or within a Commercial Landscape and environment

• Experience of working within Public Relations or media management

However, all applications will be considered, and we seek to have as varied a skillset as possible with a range of different experiences to have as much representation across Scotland as possible.

We particularly encourage applications from those who are significantly underrepresented in our sector, including individuals from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities.

Time commitment

The Committee currently holds 90 minute virtual meetings every six weeks. There will also be opportunities to take on additional tasks which can arise at different moments and depending on the activities of the Committee. We will also aim to meet in person at least once a year at an agreed location.

Practical considerations

You will receive a full induction to The Brain Tumour Charity and any specific training for the role, as well as ongoing direction from one of the team, who will be your key contact. We carry out reference checks for all individuals who will be volunteering with us on a regular basis. Volunteers will be required to complete some internal data protection and disclosure documentation before commencing the role. Volunteers must be over 18. We encourage volunteers to claim for any reasonable expenses that are incurred in the course of their volunteering with the Charity. The Deadline for applications is Monday 30 June at 5pm but we may close early if we receive a high number of applications.

We’re looking for admin volunteers to help with our daily operations.  We have a variety of ways you can get involved:

• Responding to client requests and enquiries
• Fundrasing and partnership management
• Managing and updating company databases
• Keeping track of partnership enquiries
• Maintaining internal, volunteer, and client records
• Drafting and mailing client correspondence and newsletters
• Organising events, scheduling meetings, and making travel arrangements
• Providing administrative support to other departments or projects as needed
• Performing other duties as agreed in advance

We’ve designed our volunteering programme to be flexible and adaptive to you.  All volunteering is 100% remote and you’re supported fully by our team.  You control what you do and how many hours per week you want to volunteer.  Some roles may require an Enhanced DBS check. If your application is successful, we will ask for a donation towards the cost of your enhanced DBS check if it's required for your role. This cost is £20.60.

A laptop and a quiet space to volunteer is essential.

How much time can you give?

A minimum of 2 hours per week is required. We are flexible and like to work around you.

Training

We provide CPD accredited training with 3 short courses needing to be completed prior starting your volunteer role.  After, you’ll have access to over 90 CPD accredited courses should you want to study further.

Our People Team is looking for a volunteer to help enhance the efficiency and accuracy of people-related processes related to data. By ensuring the secure and organised management of confidential documents, you will play a vital role in reinforcing compliance and safeguarding our ways of working.

What will you be doing

The Volunteer will assist with various People activity, including:

• Being a critical eye in reviewing and updating existing people-related processes and documentation to maintain and increase compliance and accuracy.
• Managing and documenting confidential and sensitive mail delivered for the People Team at the Bristol office; this can include Criminal Record Certificates, Access to Work information as well as Deduction of Payment Orders from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
• Ensuring compliance with data protection regulations when dealing with sensitive information.
• Supporting the HR Coordinators with general people-related tasks that contribute to organisational efficiency.
• Assisting with aspects of our recent SharePoint migration, ensuring documents are properly organised, categorised, and maintained in line with best practices.
• Supporting the People Team with the new ways of working in relation to GDPR admin, ensuring historic records are updated, cleansed and compliant with data protection requirements.

Your availability

Ideally, you are in the Bristol area as it would make it easier for you to volunteer with us at our Bristol office, although we can discuss this.

We’d like you to join the team for up to 12 months, with the possibility of extending it further.

However, we are flexible and open to chat about how much time you can commit to the role. Your enthusiasm and expertise are important to us, and we appreciate your insights into what will be needed.

Alex, The Leukodystrophy Charity (Alex TLC) is a small, independent rare disease charity competing for essential resources within an extremely competitive arena.

Like many other small charities, we have grown organically from an informal support group to the recognised voice for leukodystrophy patients and their families. In order to fulfil our charitable objectives we need to increase and sustain our corporate income levels.

Home-Start Bristol and South Gloucestershire (HSBSG) are seeking a new Chair of the Board

Time Commitment: c12 hrs a month

Remuneration: Voluntary, although travel and other agreed expenses may be claimed.

Home-Start UK is a national, charitable organisation with 180 local, independent Home-Starts of which HSBSG is one. Across all four nations of the United Kingdom, thousands of home visiting volunteers support over 43,000 families and 78,000 children to transform their lives.

We are now seeking a new Chair for Home-Start Bristol and South Gloucestershire. The role involves leading the board of trustees as they develop and steer a successful local charity which has a long track record of supporting families and are always seeking to reach more families and to improve their support to them

HSBSG offers group work for parents and carers as well as their unique home visiting service, all provided by carefully trained volunteers who are managed by a small team of expert staff. They are particularly proud of their new and already expanding service, Dad Matters, that provides support for new fathers in Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

Summary:

The role of the Chair of Trustees is to enable the creation and implementation of the charity’s culture, direction and strategy by leading the board and focusing it on strategic matters, oversight of the charity’s activities and maintaining high standards of governance.

Whether you have already been a chair, with experience of voluntary sector governance, or whether you have been on a board and are wanting to become a chair, you will benefit from the range of skills and experience that exists within the strong, friendly team of trustees.

General responsibilities include:

· Lead the board of trustees of Home-Start Bristol & South Gloucestershire (HSBSG), to ensure that it fulfils its governance responsibilities.

· Ensure that the trustees deploy HSBSG’s resources so as to comply with all legal requirements and in furtherance of its objects.

· Lead the board’s continuous development, ensuring planning, training, development, and evaluation is undertaken.

· Chair and facilitate meetings of HSBSG’s board, ensuring the smooth running of the board and the understanding and participation of all trustees.

· Set the agenda of board meetings with the Chief Executive; check and sign the minutes.

· Play a key role in managing the relationship between the trustees and advisers, the staff and the volunteers.

· Provide regular supervision for the Chief Executive, providing ongoing support, discussing and agreeing work priorities, preparing and agreeing supervision notes with her/him.

· Carry out an annual appraisal of the work undertaken by the Chief Executive.

· Ensure that HSBSG’s three-year Strategic Plan is reviewed annually, and ensure high-quality data is available to monitor its progress at board meetings.

· Drive trustee recruitment and succession planning and support the induction of new trustees.

How does it work?

In 2025 we launched our arm chair volunteering initiative to help us spread the word about our service and to give people the opportunity to take part in surveys and projects to help us deliver the best mental health support to the UK public.

We'd like to embrace what you love doing, whether that be sharing on socials, proof reading, surveys, sharing experiences or getting involved in our fabulous projects.

In order to volunteer for knus as an ambassador, you will need to complete a brief application form and a ID check. A DBS is not required for this role, however, if you wish to progress to another role you may need a disclosure. We do this to ensure of service remains a safe place to volunteer for all. Across the UK, our 270 local groups play a vital part in supporting people affected by MS. They provide sense of belonging, unity and friendship. And they deliver services and support for their local MS community.

We are looking to recruit an Administration Volunteer for the Bristol and South Gloucestershire Group. Our Administration Volunteers are the linchpin for our local groups’ activities. They act as the first point of contact and they make sure all relevant information is circulated to other volunteers and members. And they play an important role in keeping our data and details up to date to comply with data protection legislation.

In this role you’ll develop your administration and organisation skills. Most importantly you’ll be help your local group run efficiently, so they can keep providing valuable services to our MS community. 

Time Commitment

We estimate this role will need around 2 hours a week. Our roles are flexible and aim to fit around you. Time commitments for this role may vary depending on your activities. This is an ongoing role.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.

About you

You’ll have an interest in the MS Society and the work that we do, as well as the enthusiasm to represent both us and our values locally. You will understand the needs of people affected by MS in your area and be sympathetic to the needs and motivations of volunteers. You’ll be confident using Microsoft Office, the internet and email. You’ll be able to apply disability, equality and inclusion practices and understand and apply our risk management system. Ideally you’ll understand the local area and organisations that provide local services.

You will be reliable and easy to contact and you need to live in or near the area the group to carry out this role.

Are you interested in facilitating a peer support group for people who are struggling with their mental health? We are looking for passionate volunteers to facilitate a weekly online or face-to-face group, to discuss topics relating to mental health. We are hoping to find someone who has either ‘lived experience’ of mental health issues and is now at a positive place with their own recovery or someone who has good knowledge of mental health and looking to support others.

We work with people who need support with their mental health across London and the South East. Our support ranges from registered accommodation services for people with severe mental health conditions to drop-in community and crisis services.

In the last year, 9,499 adults accessed Hestia’s mental health support.

We help people to feel safe, develop hope for a better future, and achieve their personal goals. These goals may include rebuilding relationships with family members and friends or connecting more with their local community.

• To encourage participation and to provide focus and guidance for discussions within the group
• To negotiate/facilitate conflicts or disagreements that may arise during group meetings

This role is based in the Tenterden area.

As a charity we are able to help thousands of cats each year thanks to the generous donations we receive from members of the public. Our fundraising team leaders have the exciting and varied role of inspiring our fundraising volunteers to plan and deliver local fundraising events. Using their passion and imagination, they oversee a small team of fundraising volunteers who come together to raise the vital funds needed to cover costs such as veterinary bills and food. Our fundraising team leaders support their team of volunteers in all aspects of their roles, making sure our volunteers are happy, confident and supported.
