Our Individual Giving team raises around £27 million annually, engaging thousands of individuals through cash donations, regular giving, and legacies. As our Direct Marketing Manager (Donor Development), you'll lead our efforts to inspire, engage and retain these valued supporters.
More about the role
Reporting to the Head of Individual Giving, you’ll lead a small, dedicated team to deliver compelling campaigns and stewardship communications across multiple channels – including direct mail, email and phone.
You’ll be responsible for managing a wide range of donor development activities. These include planning and delivering cash and raffle appeals, and driving cross-sell initiatives such as converting one-off cash donors into regular givers. Your team will also be key to delivering projects such as Gift Aid stewardship, regular giving upgrades, and reactivation efforts.
A central part of the role will be managing the production and distribution of our supporter communications. You’ll collaborate closely with colleagues across the organisation and external agencies to ensure we provide a consistently excellent experience for our supporters, while maximising income and long-term engagement.
You’ll bring strategic thinking, creativity and a strong results focus to shape and grow our donor retention and development efforts, ultimately helping us raise more funds to support the pets and people who rely on our services.
Key Responsibilities

Work with the Head of Individual Giving to develop and deliver a strategic business plan and budget for Donor Development, including milestones, KPIs and income targets.

Lead a wide portfolio of multichannel campaigns with a focus on cash and raffle appeals, and wider supporter communications (including RG upgrades/conversions and Gift Aid).

Manage stewardship activities, including ‘thank you’ and update communications.

Collaborate with your Direct Marketing Manager colleagues in the Individual Giving team to improve supporter engagement and retention, including enhancing regular giving products and materials.

Ensure all activity aligns with Blue Cross brand guidelines and values.

Build strong internal and external relationships to deliver effective, insight-driven campaigns.

Champion continuous improvement by applying best practice to campaign planning, delivery and analysis.

Line-manage the Donor Development Officer and Assistant, supporting their performance, goals and development.

Monitor and control income and expenditure, providing regular budget forecasts.

Work cross-functionally with teams such as Data and Insights, Fulfilment Services and Customer Care to maximise supporter lifetime value.
About you:
You’re an experienced and results-driven direct or digital marketer and/or fundraiser, with a strong understanding of supporter motivations and a passion for delivering excellent supporter experiences. You bring a strategic mindset, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to manage multiple campaigns in a fast-paced environment.
You’re confident working to financial targets, optimising budgets, and using insight to drive innovation and continual improvement. A skilled project manager, you’re comfortable juggling priorities and deadlines, while ensuring quality and performance stay high.
Your strong communication and interpersonal skills make you a collaborative team player and effective line manager. You build positive relationships across teams and with external partners to deliver ambitious goals.

About the role
This is a hands-on, people-focused role at the heart of our programme delivery. As Programme Manager, you’ll work closely with communities, colleagues, volunteers, and partners to co-create and deliver meaningful programmes that centre on women’s voices and lived experience.
You will be responsible for managing the day-to-day running of projects — from design and facilitation through to coordination, evaluation, and reporting. The role involves a high level of collaboration across departments and with external partners, as well as ongoing work with participants and volunteers to ensure our programmes are inclusive, responsive, and impactful.

Key responsibilities
Programme & Project leadership
· Support & lead on the design, development and delivery of new and existing programmes and events aligned with the charity’s strategic objectives
· Work closely with Head of Programmes and other departments to translate strategy into bold, creative actions that centre women's voices and lived experience
· Work closely with Head of Programmes and other departments to embed co-production principles across all programme initiatives/ co-produce initiatives with participants and stakeholders, ensuring relevance and impact.
· Initiate and conduct research into topics including public health, gender inequality, and women’s health to inform and inspire programme development.
· Facilitate and host workshops and group sessions; hold inclusive and safe spaces for women, while supporting others (e.g., volunteers, project members) to take on facilitation roles themselves.

Monitoring, Learning & Evaluation
· Support with the design and management of frameworks for monitoring and evaluating programme outcomes, using tools such as Theory of Change and wellbeing indicators (e.g., WEMWBS).
· Gather and analyse data and feedback (qualitative and quantitative) from all stakeholders to inform adaptive programme delivery and report to funders.
· Produce high-quality reports, case studies, and evidence to demonstrate impact to funders and inform future work.
Marketing & Communications
· Work with Head of Programmes and Marketing teams to highlight the success and stories emerging from programme work.
· Write blogs, contribute to content creation, and ensure programme outcomes are shared with wider audiences in compelling, accessible ways.
· Ensure feedback and participant quotes are used meaningfully to build visibility and engagement.
· Ensure that all relevant programme information — including upcoming activities, events, and opportunities — is communicated clearly and in a timely manner to the appropriate teams or platforms, to support strong marketing, effective recruitment, and maximum engagement.
People Management
· Line manage staff, volunteers and project facilitators, providing clear expectations, supportive supervision, and development opportunities.
· Create a culture that is inclusive, supportive, and inspiring – empowering others to lead and grow.
· Support the wellbeing of all staff and volunteers, with an understanding of the specific health experiences and barriers faced by women.
Funding & Finance
· Develop and monitor programme budgets and work with the Head of Programmes to report against spend.
· Work with SLT to support with research and applications for funding opportunities to support programme delivery and financial sustainability.
· Manage relationships with funders and corporate partners, reporting on outcomes and impact.
Policy, Safeguarding & Organisational Development
- Be an active contributor to the charity’s safeguarding team, playing a role in creating safe, inclusive spaces for all participants and staff.
- Support the implementation of all organisational policies — not only by adhering to them but by actively identifying areas for improvement, sharing feedback, and contributing to policy development.
- Stay up to date with best practice in safeguarding, boundaries, mental health support, and inclusive, trauma-informed practice, and help ensure these are embedded in programme delivery and team culture.
Data Protection, administration and programme coordination
- Oversee the secure collection and storage of data, ensuring full compliance with GDPR.
- Implement and manage CRM systems relevant to programme delivery.
- Ensure the smooth, effective and compliant delivery of all programmes, activities, and events, with a strong focus on quality, coordination, and attention to detail.
- Act as a key contact for programme/project enquiries and coordinate logistics such as booking facilitators, venues, equipment, and refreshments.
- Liaise with participants, facilitators, and volunteers before, during and after programme delivery to ensure a seamless and supportive experience.
- Ensure all relevant paperwork and digital documentation — including EDI monitoring forms, feedback, and volunteer information — is completed, stored securely, and remains compliant with GDPR and organisational standards.
- Manage relationships with external facilitators, including onboarding, contracts, payment processing, and quality assurance.
- Coordinate across departments (e.g. marketing, community engagement, operations) to ensure strong internal communication and the effective promotion and delivery of all programmes.
- Maintain accurate programme records, track progress against plans, and ensure that systems are in place for smooth programme operations.

About You

About the role
The role sits within the Mass Participation Team, an ambitious team that attracts and enables supporters to raise funds for Young Lives vs Cancer through participation in virtual or real-life events and challenges. They deliver through creating a quality and forward-looking events and challenges portfolio and working with partner teams attract motivated participants and provide an outstanding supporter experience that ensures fundraising goals are smashed and long-term relationships are built.
Young Lives vs Cancer recruits around 11,500 virtual fundraisers a year. For many of these supporters this is their first interaction with Young Lives vs Cancer and shows that virtual fundraising can be just the beginning of a relationship with a new supporter.
Virtual fundraising is ever evolving and competitive. We need someone to lead the team who understands the opportunities and challenges presented by this type of fundraising. Someone who will focus on the lifetime value of our supporters and who can motivate a team to be ambitious, brave and confident in this space.
The main purpose of this role is to lead on the virtual fundraising portfolio at Young Lives vs Cancer. This will include developing a multi-year, multi-event strategy for virtual challenges, managing the virtual fundraising team and using insight to adapt and innovate our digital offering.

Key Responsibilities
GENERAL MARKETING
To work closely with the Head of Marketing and Head of Trading and relevant teams to:
- Contribute to the development and delivery of their commercial marketing plans, aligning with their wider marketing activities and brand guidelines
- Define and segment target audiences – both business and customers – and reach them through the most effective marketing channels
- Work proactively with their artistic team to identify opportunities for commercial activities that add value to customer experience, flagging these for consideration by the commercial teams and devising/delivering related B2C campaigns to drive return on investment (ROI)
- Develop their commercial Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system and leverage customer behaviour insights to drive loyalty, repeat visits, and meaningful engagement.

- Develop high quality digital/offline assets to support the full client/booking journey

CATERING AND RETAIL

- Sourcing and producing high quality signage/point of sale display, seasonal menu designs, promotional print, direct mail in line with their brand guidelines

- Ensure the Food & Drink and Retail sections of their website are always looking their best and showcasing what’s new in an appealing way.

Person Specification
Essential
- A creative, organised and data-savvy marketer with experience running integrated campaigns
- Understanding of both B2B and B2C marketing landscapes and can pivot between them with ease.
- Experience of B2B marketing, particularly in promoting services to corporate or professional audiences
- Experience of developing and delivering B2C marketing campaigns, ideally within hospitality, retail, or cultural sectors
- Knowledge and experience of CRM systems
- Knowledge and experience of design packages, ideally Adobe Creative Suite and Canva
- Knowledge and experience of Google Analytics and social media analytics
- Knowledge and experience of search engine and website optimisation techniques
- Strong copywriting and content creation skills.
- A collaborative and proactive approach, who thrives on cross-functional working and clear communication.
- Passionate about arts, culture, and community – and excited by the idea of contributing to a charitable cause through commercial success.
Desirable
- Strong up-to-date knowledge of cultural and hospitality sectors in Birmingham and the region, including key influencers, drivers, challenges, opportunities
- Good knowledge of LinkedIn
- Knowledge and experience of bulk email software
