What will you be doing?

Our purpose is to provide funding to relieve the burden of financial, physical and emotional hardship in our local community of Hampton, Teddington, Twickenham and Whitton.
The perception of Richmond Upon Thames as a wealthy borough masks high levels of need and disadvantage. That means that support for those in need locally rarely comes from outside the borough which in turn means the work of local funders and voluntary sector organisations, like Hampton Fund, is critical. Our endowment of £60m+ enables us to make grants to both individuals and community organisations of £2m-£2.5m pa.
We wish to appoint a new trustee who will have the enthusiasm, time and commitment to contribute to the work of the charity as it begins delivering an ambitious new three-year strategy. You will be involved in making decisions on a wide range of issues, influencing the development of our work and bringing about change. We are specifically seeking a trustee with professional experience in any aspect of social care for vulnerable groups relevant to our grant making. This could, for example, be in the areas of cost-of-living support, health, social work or children’s services.
It is hoped that the candidate will have a connection to our area of benefit through either their daily life or work.
It is not necessary to have previous board committee experience as training will be provided. We encourage applications from people with a range of life experiences, ages and backgrounds.
What are we looking for?
Professional experience and expertise in a relevant aspect of social care to that of our grant making.
We are looking for someone with a good current knowledge of social care infrastructure and systems across either the statutory or voluntary sector, or both. This could, for example, be in the areas of cost-of-living support, health, social work or children’s services.
It is expected that Trustees will either live, work or have another connection to our area of benefit. It is not necessary to have previous board committee experience as training will be provided.

- Trustees do not receive any remuneration, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
 - The appointment is normally for a period of five years and a Trustee can serve no more than two terms of office, i.e. ten years.

What is a Recruitment Coordinator?
Recruitment Coordinators help us find local people interested in supporting SSAFA and take them through our recruitment and selection process.
Why do we need you?
We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our beneficiaries come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan.
There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.
To offer the best possible service to our clients we need to match the right volunteers to the right role. Could you spare a few hours a week to help recruit new volunteers and welcome them to SSAFA by supporting them through their induction phase? We’d love to hear from you if think you could help with this important role.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
The role is about recruitment and so will involve attending local recruitment fairs a few times a year as well as meeting volunteers both face-to-face and virtually. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but the administration part of the ole can be done form home.
What would you be doing?
- Be the first point of contact for all volunteering enquiries, ensuring that all potential volunteers receive a timely response.
 - Supporting volunteers through the recruitment and induction process and ensuring volunteers are communicated with throughout.
 - Arranging informal interviews for new volunteers conducted in-line with SSAFA policies.
 - Conducting ID checks (where relevant) so the volunteer can begin the vetting process
 - Supporting volunteers to book onto role specific training and ensuring they complete their mandatory training.
 - Working with the VDM to ensure branch vacancies are advertised on the branch website and national websites and support any national recruitment campaigns
 - Maintaining good relationships with local Volunteer Centres and other local sources of volunteer promotion and attend local recruitment fairs.
 - Evaluating volunteer recruitment activity, experimenting with creative ways to recruit volunteers from a variety of sources to create a diverse network of volunteers.
 - Treating all potential volunteers inclusively with respect and sensitivity, regardless of age or background
 - Supporting any volunteers facing barriers to find a suitable role.
 - Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA remembering that anyone you meet could be a potential client, volunteer, or fundraiser.
 - Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA
 
The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

 - Access to a range of e-learning courses.
 - Support from the Volunteer Development Manager and Trainer (per region)
 - Access to the Volunteer Experience Team based at our central office.
 - Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses
 - Volunteers will be covered by SSAFAs Public Liability Insurance whilst carrying out the role.

You don’t need a military background, just the ability to get on with all kinds of people, some basic I.T skills and good written and spoken English. As Fundraising Coordinator, you would work with your local SSAFA branch to develop a Fundraising Plan. You would be central to delivering this local plan to raise funds through a range of local sources including grants, trusts, appeals, collections, and events.

When would you be needed and where would you be based?
As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. You would also be out and about at events and meetings. This role would suit someone looking to give a regular time commitment to SSAFA although when and where would be flexible to suit you.
What would you be doing?
- Developing an ethical fundraising plan based on the needs of the branch and choosing a mix of sources.
 - Working with the branch secretary and Regional Fundraising Manager, recruit a team of fundraising volunteers to support events, appeals and collections.
 - Working with the Regional Fundraising Manager, support national fundraising campaigns.
 - Working with the Branch Publicity Officer, develop opportunities to combine awareness and fundraising.
 - Planning and running local appeals, collections, and events
 - Identifying and submitting applications to appropriate trusts and grant funding organisations
 - Working with Marketing staff at central office check that all fundraising materials meet SSAFA branding style and current key messages.
 - Liaise with Regional Fundraising Manager when pursuing opportunities beyond local sources e.g., corporates.
 - Evaluate fundraising activities and provide reports and information for the branch.
 - Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA including all sections of the community in awareness raising
 - Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA including observing our policies such as the Volunteering policy and data protection policy (these will be covered in your training and local induction.)

What are Serving Community Teams?
Volunteers are the lifeblood of SSAFA. SSAFA has developed Serving Community Teams for volunteers to support serving personnel their families in the UK and overseas.
A Serving Community Team is run by a small team of volunteers on or near a British Armed Forces base which provide emotional, practical and financial support to the serving community. Our Fundraising Volunteers help support local fundraising activities to raise awareness and vital funds for SSAFA. You could be helping at fayres, quizzes or raffles, or lending a hand at a stall at a unit Families Day.
Why we want you
Serving Community Teams (SCTs) offer financial, practical and emotional support to serving personnel and their families at military bases both in the UK and overseas. Each SCT consists of a group of dedicated volunteers working together to raise SSAFA’s profile, ensuring those who need support receive it. Fundraising Volunteers are a support role within the team, helping to raise awareness of SSAFA at fundraising events throughout the year. If you enjoy meeting people while lending a hand at fundraising events, we would love to hear from you. You could be helping at fayres, running quizzes or raffles, cheering at sporting events or having a stall at a unit’s Families Day. Depending on the size of the SCT, you may be supported by a Events and Fundraising Coordinator.
What you will be doing
- Being part of a team helping host events, run stalls, attend fayres and working together to ensure they run well.
 - Promoting events, putting up posters and spreading the word.
 - Helping to set-up or pack away afterwards.
 - Promoting the work of SSAFA and the SCT, highlighting case studies, good news stories and best practice to the Events and Fundraising Coordinator.
 - Being an ambassador for SSAFA, building positive relationships with all stakeholders.
 
The skills you need

 - Trustees may be invited to attend Pony Club events such as the Championships, the Pony Club Conference, and Trustee away days.
 - New Trustees will attend an induction at The Pony Club Office in Warwickshire and are expected to complete NCVO Charity Trustee Induction Training if new to the role of Trustee.

What are Serving Community Teams?
Volunteers are the lifeblood of SSAFA. SSAFA has developed Serving Community Teams for volunteers to support serving personnel their families in the UK and overseas.
A Serving Community Team is run by a small team of volunteers on or near a British Armed Forces base which provide emotional, practical and financial support to the serving community. Our volunteer Finance Coordinators are an integral part of the team. To enable volunteers to deliver their work in the community, the Finance Coordinator is the key to processing grants and volunteer expenses, as well as other tasks such as balancing the books.
Why we want you
There is a SSAFA presence throughout the serving community, both in the UK and overseas. In many areas SSAFA has Serving Community Teams (SCTs) which offer financial, practical, and emotional support to serving personnel and their families. Each team consists of a group of dedicated volunteers who make this possible. That’s where you come in; could you spare some time on a regular basis to ensure the SCT meets its financial obligations?
What you will be doing
- Reconciling the local SCT bank account and recording all transactions.
 - Maintaining accurate records using SSAFA’s online financial management system.
 - Working with the Chair around financial planning; advising on any financial implications of plans and overseeing the annual budget.
 - Preparing year-end accounts, financial statements and contribute to the team’s Annual Return.
 - Being an ambassador for SSAFA, building positive relationships with all stakeholders.

About Leicestershire LGBTQ+ Centre
Leicestershire LGBTQ+ Centre is a community organisation and registered charity that exists to champion LGBTQ+ lives. We provide a safe, inclusive space for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Our work spans direct support, connection, advocacy and celebration.
What we do

Counselling: We offer professional counselling, including a specialised domestic abuse service, to help people navigate challenges and build resilience.

Social and support groups: We run groups for young people, adults, trans and non-binary people, and for family members and allies. These groups create stable communities, reduce isolation and offer peer support.

Governance and the role of the Board
The Board of Trustees is responsible for the charity’s strategy, governance and financial health. Trustees safeguard the charity’s assets, ensure compliance with law and regulation, and work with the Chief Executive to ensure the charity is running effectively. Trustees support, challenge and advise the Senior Leadership Team in a spirit of partnership. The Chair leads the Board and ensures it functions well.
Trustees are also directors of the charitable company. We provide trustee indemnity insurance.
The role of Chair
Purpose
The Chair leads the Board of Trustees to ensure effective governance, a positive culture and a shared focus on impact. The Chair works closely with the Chief Executive to ensure the organisation delivers its strategy and remains well run.
Strategic focus for the next 12 to 24 months

Oversight of our three-year National Lottery funding programme, including delivery assurance and risk management.

Support for regional expansion so that services reach communities across Leicestershire and Rutland in a measured and sustainable way.

Governance oversight of venue acquisition and the preparatory work that will enable a successful opening and long-term viability.
 
Core responsibilities
- 
	
Provide leadership to the Board and ensure trustees discharge their duties effectively and in line with the Charity Governance Code.
 
- 
	
Set Board agendas with the Chief Executive, plan and chair effective meetings, and ensure clear decisions, minutes and action tracking.
 
- 
	
Maintain a strong, constructive relationship with the Chief Executive, including monthly one-to-ones and an annual appraisal led by the Chair with Board input.
 
- 
	
Ensure the Board receives timely, relevant information and is able to scrutinise performance, finance, risk and impact.

Oversee Board composition, skills and performance, including recruitment, induction, training and periodic reviews.

Relationship with the Chief Executive
The Chief Executive is accountable to the Board. The Chair undertakes regular supportive one-to-ones with the Chief Executive and leads their annual appraisal. The Chair works with the Chief Executive to set clear priorities, manage risk and unlock barriers to delivery.
Time commitment and meeting pattern

Estimated at a maximum of two to three days per month. This includes preparation, meetings and ambassadorial duties.

Maximum of six Board meetings per year. Meetings are held in person at The Centre.

Monthly Chair and Chief Executive one-to-one meetings.

Quarterly committee and working sessions may be convened as needed for finance, risk, governance or venue planning. The Chair provides oversight across these areas.

Experience as a vice-chair, committee chair or equivalent governance role.

Eligibility, safeguarding and conduct
Trustees must be at least 16 and not disqualified under charity law. The role is subject to two satisfactory references and an enhanced DBS check. A short code of conduct applies to all trustees. Conflicts of interest must be declared at appointment and kept up to date. A whistleblowing route is in place.
