Challengers is a charity dedicated to providing inclusive play opportunities for disabled children and young people. Founded in 1979, we remove barriers to play, support families through respite, and build supportive communities. Our vision is a world where all children can play together freely.

Your Role as Trustee
You’ll contribute to the strategic direction and governance of Challengers, ensuring we deliver our mission effectively. You’ll work with a passionate Board and Senior Leadership Team.

Key Responsibilities

• Uphold and support the mission, values, and strategic aims of Challengers.
• Contribute actively to Board discussions and decision-making with independent judgment and strategic insight.
• Support and challenge the Chief Executive and leadership team to deliver the charity’s objectives effectively.
• Champion the work of Challengers externally by attending events and acting as an ambassador.
• Ensure legal, financial, and regulatory compliance as outlined in the Charity Commission’s guidance for trustees.
• Engage with and support the implementation of projects and initiatives.

Time Commitment

· 4 early evening Board meetings per year (in person)

· Participation in 1 sub-committee (4 meetings per year)

· Attendance at the AGM and at least one event annually

This is a voluntary, unpaid position, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Around 90 per cent of our income comes from our supporters and we couldn't continue doing what we do without them. That means, our community fundraising volunteers play a really important part in rallying people together to raise vital funds which help to protect children and prevent abuse.

What you'll do

You'll volunteer without regular time commitments, ‘as and when' volunteering! Engage with the public, organisations and local communities – promoting a positive image of the NSPCC! You'll be a valued part of one of our Volunteer Community Fundraising Teams across the UK, raising awareness and funds. We appreciate that work, family and friends come first and, with that in mind, this role offers flexibility to fit in with your lifestyle. You only need to commit to a couple of hours a month, but if you want to do more that would be great.

We'll support you with advice, skills and tools to help you fundraise and spread the word of the NSPCC. In 2022 the NSPCC's Speak out. Stay safe volunteers returned to primary schools. As a Speak out. Stay safe. volunteer, you will visit primary schools to deliver Speak out. Stay safe. workshops that teach children about the different types of abuse and how they can speak out and stay safe. Our Speak out. Stay safe. workshops are age-appropriate and memorable and need an energetic and enthusiastic person to deliver them. You'll work alongside other Speak out. Stay safe. volunteers to make sure at the end of each session the children feel empowered and know who they can speak out to if they are worried.

The mentoring project at Esteem invites members of the community to share their skills and experience by mentoring a young person with similar interests. 

Mentoring is an important part of our organisation and runs alongside Work Experience opportunities, providing tailored volunteer opportunities to young people aged 14-26, social activities and wellbeing support.  Creating space for young adults to thrive within their lives and communities.

Role Purpose

This is an exciting opportunity to volunteer for a charity that is passionate about giving young people the chance to develop their skills and confidence, both for their own benefit and for that of society as a whole. 

You can make a difference by mentoring 14-26 year olds who are developing or discovering their potential.

The mentors’ role is to support young people reach their next step focusing on their vocational development and encouraging progression into or maintaining Education, Employment or Training. The profile of many of Esteem’s young adults is that they have low levels of confidence and may be quite anxious; some young people may be neurodiverse including have a history of mental health problems, they also may have faced homelessness and other life affecting issues including the effects of long term unemployment 

• You will be based at Esteem’s Shoreham office but may meet your mentee in a public place such as a coffee shop, if that is what you both prefer and meets safeguarding requirements.

• You will be skills matched with a young person who will have similar interests, experience or an interest in your professional field. You will support your mentee by identifying and highlighting their skills and establishing realistic and achievable goals by breaking them down into manageable steps. 

• You will enter notes onto our database system UpShot after each meeting with your mentee and will be asked to fill in an outcome form at the conclusion of your mentoring relationship. 

Principal tasks and responsibilities 

1. To meet with your mentee regularly (once a week or once a fortnight) at a convenient time for you both either at the Esteem’s office or in a public place like a cafe. 

2. To offer ongoing vocational support to your mentee and support them to access services (such as in-house Counselling or from external organisations) if they need help with any issues they are dealing with. 

3. To support your mentee through their vocational setting, either volunteering at Esteem or within their personal, work or educational setting.

4. To offer positive feedback and aim to build self-confidence with your mentee.

5. To keep up to date notes of your meetings.

6. Complete regular reviews with the mentee and create a clear action plan if appropriate.

7. Attend all relevant training to your role.

8. To report any safeguarding concerns to the Safeguarding Team.

9. To maintain the required level of confidentiality in all tasks and communications. 

10. Uphold the commitment of the organisation to equality and diversity and its set of values. 

Person Specification

Experience

For this round of recruitment we are looking primarily for those who work in the creative industry and those who may have started their own business and/or have an entrepreneurial background. That being said, we are more than happy to accept applications from those who feel they have other skills and experience that could benefit young adults.

Whilst some experience of mentoring or supporting young adults would be helpful this is something we will cover in the day’s training.

Skills, Abilities and Knowledge 

• Motivated by promoting the development and wellbeing of young people; providing opportunities for growth where possible 

• Ability to problem solve; feeling able to support young adults to overcome obstacles

• Ability to work on own initiative (with guidance from mentor manager) 

• A willingness to undertake a small amount of preparation for each session and to take accurate notes after each session

• Ability and willingness to use computer systems, including googlemail (training provided)

• Good interpersonal skills; ability to listen, empathise and relate to others

Our partner is works to reduce poverty in Zambia by helping vulnerable children and young people access education, develop skills, and build better future - through training, health education, and community initiatives.

Amid a period of significant change, the charity is moving to a locally led delivery model, with the UK focusing on fundraising, governance, and reporting. They seek a qualified accountant with strategic financial management experience, charity accounting knowledge, and ideally some international development insight. The Treasurer will provide hands-on financial oversight, ensure robust controls, and maintain compliance.

The role includes chairing a Finance & Operations Sub-Committee, guiding the Board on financial matters, and working with trustees, outsourced providers, and the team in Zambia.

The Board meets quarterly (remotely) for up to three hours, with the Sub-Committee meeting beforehand. The estimated time commitment required is 4 hours per week, flexibly.

Join Our Team and Support the NSPCC in Plymouth!

What are we looking for?

We're looking for enthusiastic, creative, and organised people from Plymouth and the surrounding areas to support the NSPCC with events and fundraising. Our Community Fundraising and Plymouth-based Together for Childhood teams are instrumental in promoting the work of the NSPCC across the area, and we are looking for amazing volunteers to support the teams and help promote our missions of bringing people together to raise awareness and funds that help protect children and prevent cruelty and abuse. 

What will you be doing?

Volunteering in this role will mean you become a valued member of our volunteer network across Plymouth. You will support Community Fundraising by engaging with the public and local organisations, spreading the messages of the NSPCC, raising funds and just proudly representing what we stand for, and you will also take on a role of supporting and promoting our long-term Together for Childhood project at events within the community. 
There are plenty of different opportunities when it comes to being a Friend of the NSPCC in Plymouth, so you can really make the role your own and support us in a way that works for you!

How regular is the volunteering?

This role is a flexible, 'as and when' volunteering opportunity with no regular time commitment required! We understand that life comes first, which is why this role can easily fit around you and your schedule. A commitment of a couple of hours a month is all we ask for, but if you would like to do more then we would love that too, and there are always plenty of ways to get involved!

What will you get from the role?

In this role, we'll support you with advice, skills and tools to help you raise awareness of and funds for the NSPCC. You'll learn more about how you're helping to protect children across the UK, specifically in Plymouth and the surrounding areas, and of course you will have the opportunity to grow your skills and confidence by volunteering in a number of different ways, whether this be attending events to promote the messaging of Together for Childhood, or doing some fundraising within your local area. We're looking for enthusiastic, creative and organised people across Kent who can offer their support for a variety of local events and initiatives. To help build a group of passionate people we can call on if we need an extra pair of hands.

Around 90 per cent of our income comes from our supporters and we couldn't continue doing what we do without them. That means, our community fundraising volunteers play a really important part in rallying people together to raise vital funds which help to protect children and prevent abuse.

What you'll do:

Simply apply via the link and we'll keep you on our list of "Friends of Kent" fundraising group to contact whenever an event comes up that we needs support. All you need to do is let us know whether you are able to help or not.

The kind of support we are looking for could be anything from spreading the word about an event and helping to sell tickets, or making tea and coffee at an event, or even helping put up flyers in your local area.  Creating a pool of supports will help us run our events as smoothly as possible and help spread aware of the NSPCC in your local area. You'll be a valued part of our Volunteer Community Fundraising Team within Kent, raising awareness and funds. 

We appreciate that work, family and friends come first and, with that in mind, this role offers complete flexibility to fit in with your lifestyle. You'll volunteer without regular time commitments, ‘as and when' volunteering!

What you'll get:

You'll learn more about how you're helping to protect children across the UK, and you'll have the opportunity to grow your skills and inspire others to support us. It's also a chance to spend time with like-minded people and make new friends.
