Are you comfortable speaking with people? Would you like to gather meaningful data for Shelter while you do so?

Information about the role

In this role, you’ll be phoning people who have previously contacted Shelter for advice. The purpose is to gather feedback from them on their experience with Shelter and how that has impacted upon their housing and general wellbeing. This helps us identify the impacts our service is having, and whether there is anything we should do differently.

Location: Shelter Hub, Norwich

Suggested contribution: One day per week (can be flexible around your commitments).

Availability: Volunteering will take place at a time that suits you, within Monday-Friday, 9am – 5pm

Main activities may include:

· Phoning clients around 8-10 weeks after they accessed our services.

· Asking clients set questions to gather information on their experiences with Shelter and the difference it has made to them.

· Recording the phone calls and the responses given onto our client database (CRM).

· Presenting findings from the feedback calls in an accessible format e.g. using Word or Excel.

· Identifying key findings and/or trends and sharing with a relevant team member.

This role fights the housing emergency by identifying the impacts our advice services are having on clients, as well as whether there’s any changes we should make.

Your skills and experience

The volunteer in this role will need to have basic IT skills, be comfortable speaking over the telephone and be considerate of their language and tone. We also recommend the volunteer to have some resilience to potentially challenging conversations. But the most important thing is that you care about fighting the housing emergency!

Supporting you

· You will be provided with an induction into your role, access to relevant learning and a copy of our volunteer handbook.

· The role, including learning and communications, are flexible, so can be tailored so they best suit your needs and preferences.

· You will be able to claim reasonable volunteering expenses in line with Shelter’s volunteer expenses policy. Where financial circumstances would be a barrier to volunteering, we may be able to offer these funds in advance.

· You will be able to access our volunteer support package, including our colleague assistance programme and Shelter’s network of mental health first aiders.

For the role to be mutually beneficial, we hope for volunteers to volunteer for 6 months.

The Kidsgrove sessions take place on the 2nd and 4th Friday morning of the month.

About Candlelighters 

Each year, over 150 children in Yorkshire are diagnosed with cancer. When a child is diagnosed, lives are turned upside down instantly: not just for the child but the entire family. Getting well again can be a long and challenging journey, emotionally, physically, and financially.

Supporting children and families throughout that journey is why our charity, Candlelighters, was formed more than 40 years ago. Our mission is to bring light to every family affected by childhood cancer across Yorkshire by providing emotional, practical and financial support, as well as bringing hope, by investing in vital research to improve the outcomes and lives of children with cancer. 

Purpose of the Role and Key Activities: 

Families who have been affected by children’s cancer(including patients, parents, siblings and grandparents) can come to The Square for a coffee and a chat, as well as book and access a variety of support services, including: 

• Wellbeing Services & Activities 

• Specialist 1:1 Support 

• Family Support Groups and Events 

As a Front of House Volunteer, you will support the Family Support Worker role and the rest of the Team at Candlelighters with a variety of tasks including (but not limited to): 

• Meeting and greeting families and other visitors 

• Making drinks for families and visitors

• Answering the telephone, transferring calls and taking messages 

• Making bookings and updating our database 

• Keeping the reception area clean and tidy 

• Keeping the kitchen, meeting rooms and other communal areas clean and tidy 

• Cleaning and maintaining the coffee machine 

• Setting up rooms for meetings and events 

• Assisting the Team with other tasks and activities as required 

• Maintaining professional boundaries and adhering to Candlelighters’ policies and procedures 

• Checking stock levels and dates in Champs Pantry 

• Re-stocking refreshments and drinks 

We are looking for volunteers who: 

• Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills 

• Have experience of working in a customer service environment 

• Have excellent customer care skills

• Can communicate effectively with a variety of people 

• Are confident, friendly and approachable 

• Have a fun and positive outlook

• Are experienced in working as part of a team

• Can remain calm under pressure 

• Are proactive and able to use own initiative 

• Are hardworking, reliable and organised 

• Have good IT skills and experience of using a database 

• Can move furniture (tables and chairs) and boxes

• Can climb multiple flights of stairs 

• Can manage own emotions when working with families affected by childhood cancer 

• Can maintain professional boundaries and follow Candlelighters Policies and Procedures. 

This role is subject to an enhanced criminal record check, which is processed through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

We recognise that family members accessing Candlelighters’ services may wish to volunteer with Candlelighters. However, this role is not suitable for family members receiving support from Candlelighters. This is to ensure they are given the best possible care and support without any potential conflict of interest. Other volunteering opportunities can be found on our website.
