Operating at significant scale and complexity, the organisation manages a diverse range of income streams including donations, legacies, grant and contract funding, trading activity and investment income. The finance function plays a key role in supporting strong governance, compliance and decision-making across the organisation.

The Job

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced tax professional to take ownership of all tax matters within a large and complex organisation. Working closely with senior finance colleagues and external advisers, you will act as the organisation's lead technical expert on VAT, Corporation Tax and Gift Aid, ensuring robust compliance, governance and risk management. You will provide practical advice to senior stakeholders, helping the organisation understand and navigate the tax implications of operational and strategic decisions.
Key responsibilities include:

• Leading on VAT, Corporation Tax and Gift Aid compliance and advisory matters
• Preparing and reviewing VAT returns, including partial exemption calculations and annual adjustments
• Managing Corporation Tax compliance and reporting
• Developing and maintaining tax governance frameworks, controls and processes
• Identifying and mitigating tax risks across the organisation
• Providing technical guidance to finance and non-finance stakeholders
• Building effective relationships with external advisers, auditors and internal teams
• Driving continuous improvement across tax processes, controls and reporting systems

Location: Remote working, with occasional office attendance in London (typically once per quarter)

The Person

We are seeking a qualified accountant or tax professional with strong technical expertise and experience operating within a large, complex organisation.

You will be able to demonstrate:

• CCAB qualification or equivalent relevant professional qualification
• Strong knowledge of UK VAT, Corporation Tax and Gift Aid legislation
• Experience managing complex VAT environments, including partial exemption
• A track record of delivering accurate and timely tax compliance activities
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
• The ability to translate technical tax matters into practical business guidance
• Experience working collaboratively across finance, systems, planning and operational teams
• A proactive approach to continuous improvement and risk management

Role Overview:

The role will be carried out in the finance department, which is situated within Battersea Park. The role will be reporting to the Head of Finance. Regular duties would initially consist of, but not be limited to, the below. They will be reviewed on a regular basis to ensure they are in line with development needs. 

Central Services ensuresthe company operates smoothly and assists in working towards Enables strategic direction. Supporting the various services that make up Enable, Central Services consists of small and high output teams including Human Resources, Marcomms, Operations and Finance. Together, these teams make up the foundation of our business, driving our mission and fostering growth and development. 

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

• Lead the monthly, quarterly and annual reporting processes, delivering to the agreed timetable.
• Line manage the Finance Officer, providing guidance, objective setting, appraisal and performance management.
• Prepare and post all month-end journals, including accruals, prepayments and payroll journals.
• Post deferred and accrued income entries in Sage Intacct in line with the organisation’s revenue recognition policy.
• Run monthly depreciation, post fixed asset journals and maintain the fixed asset register.
• Process internal and external recharges.
• Review the bank and credit card reconciliations prepared by the Finance Officer and the debtors control account reconciliation prepared by the Credit Controller.
• Check the trial balance against the management accounts and prepare management accounts narratives and variance commentary for review by the Head of Finance.
• Compile and analyse financial data to create accurate and timely reports for management review.
• Take responsibility for all balance sheet reconciliations other than the debtors control account (prepared by the Credit Controller) and the bank and credit card accounts (prepared by the Finance Officer), ensuring reconciling items are investigated and cleared promptly.
• Review payment runs prepared by the Finance Officer ahead of approval by the Head of Finance, deputising as approver in the Head of Finance’s absence.
• Approve routine accounts receivable credit notes in line with delegated authority; credit notes above the delegated threshold and all write-offs are approved by the Head of Finance.
• Support the Credit Controller with receivables adjustments, write-offs and account queries.
• Apply accounting policies in line with relevant accounting standards and ensure they are followed across the organisation, escalating any issues to the Head of Finance.
• Assist with the preparation of the annual financial statements under the Charities SORP (FRS 102).
• Support the annual audit, preparing working papers and responding to auditor queries.
• Prepare and submit ONS returns.
• Assist with the preparation of budgets, forecasts and cash flow forecasts.
• Business partner with cross-functional teams, providing financial expertise, guidance and training as required.
• Provide recommendations to minimise risk and improve financial performance: identify areas for improvement, propose solutions and implement agreed changes.
• Provide Sage Intacct training and support to non-finance users.
• Act as the first point of contact for junior members of staff with operational and technical queries.

Skills and Experience:

• Qualified Accountant - ACCA/ACA/CIMA.
• Experience operating at Management Accountant level within a charity or not-for-profit environment.
• Knowledge of relevant accounting systems. Strong IT literacy, Microsoft Excel in particular.
• Demonstrable experience of owning a month-end close and full balance sheet reconciliation cycle.
• Strong attention to detail and able to produce work to a high level of accuracy.
• Good problem-solving ability.
• Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain financial information to non-finance colleagues.
• Ability to prioritise and work independently to deadlines.
• Experience of Sage Intacct.
• Knowledge of the Charities SORP (FRS 102) and fund accounting.
• Experience of delivering system training to non-finance users.
• Experience of ONS or other statutory return submissions.

Financial control responsibility for accurate, complete, Charity SORP compliant balances in the balance sheet. • Experience of producing, reviewing or supporting monthly management accounts, including variance analysis and clear commentary.
• Experience of supporting budgeting and forecasting processes, and explaining movements against budget.
• Experience of working with accounting or finance systems, ideally Netsuite or a similar system.
• Strong Excel skills, including lookups, pivot tables, data sorting and analysis.
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, with a proactive approach to identifying and correcting errors.
• The ability to communicate financial information in a clear, accessible and supportive way to non-finance colleagues.
• Experience of charity finance, restricted and unrestricted funds, grant coding or donor reporting would be beneficial.

Previous involvement in audit processes and preparing audit evidence or working papers will also be important.

Beyond your technical expertise, you will be proactive, collaborative and solutions-focused, with strong attention to detail and a commitment to financial accuracy.

You will need:

• Studying towards or already hold a professional accounting qualification such as ACA, ACCA or CIMA

A key part of the role will be providing clear financial insight and commentary to the Director of Finance & Operations, senior leaders, trustees and budget holders, helping ensure financial information translates into effective organisational decision-making.

You will also have supervisory responsibilities, providing technical guidance to colleagues, reviewing finance work and helping to ensure the team consistently delivers accurate work to agreed deadlines.

Key responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

• Leading on monthly management accounts, forecasts and budget monitoring
• Providing insightful variance analysis and financial commentary
• Supporting senior leaders and budget holders with financial advice
• Leading month-end and year-end processes
• Maintaining and reviewing key balance sheet and control account reconciliations
• Managing cashflow reporting and wider financial planning
• Reviewing and reconciling monthly payroll
• Supporting internal and external audit processes
• Supporting the five-year budget plan and integrated financial planning

About you

We are seeking a fully qualified accountant with a recognised professional qualification such as ACCA, CIPFA, CIMA, ICAEW, ICAS or equivalent.

You will have a strong management accounting background and experience across areas such as management accounts, forecasting, budget monitoring, reconciliations, month-end and year-end processes.

We are particularly keen to speak with candidates who have experience of:

• Producing management accounts and financial reports
• Budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis
• Financial controls and reconciliations
• Audit preparation and supporting audit queries
• Improving financial systems and processes
• Working accurately to tight deadlines
• Advanced Excel and financial data analysis

Experience within a school, academy trust, charity, public sector or similarly regulated environment would be advantageous. Knowledge of academy finance requirements, ESFA returns and school MIS platforms would also be desirable.

You will be a confident communicator who can explain financial information to non-finance stakeholders, challenge appropriately and build strong relationships across an organisation.

Imperial is investing significantly in the future of its Finance function through the implementation of Oracle Fusion, bringing enhanced business intelligence capabilities and the modernisation of their management accounting processes.

As Head of Management Accounting, you will play a central role in shaping this transformation whilst leading a high-performing team responsible for delivering financial insight across the University's extensive non-academic portfolio.

The role

• Lead and develop a high-performing management accounting function of 11 finance professionals, creating a collaborative, high-performing culture centred on continuous improvement and exceptional customer service.
• Oversee management accounting and financial reporting for more than 30 support service departments, responsible for approximately £320m of annual expenditure and £185m of capital investment programmes.
• Lead budgeting, forecasting and month-end reporting, ensuring timely, accurate and insightful financial information that supports strategic decision making across the University.
• Act as the finance lead for the continued optimisation of Oracle Fusion, driving process redesign, standardisation, automation and the adoption of AI to improve efficiency and reporting capability.
• Oversee financial accounting and statutory reporting for key University subsidiaries, whilst leading external audit activity and ensuring compliance with FRS102.
• Partner with senior leaders across Finance and Professional Services, providing commercial insight, challenging assumptions and influencing strategic decision making.
• Work closely with the Finance Business Intelligence team to further develop reporting capability through Power BI and data-driven insights.
• Champion continuous improvement by reviewing existing processes, strengthening controls and embedding best practice across the management accounting function.

Essential criteria

• Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA or CCAB).
• Proven leadership experience managing and developing finance teams.
• Strong management accounting, budgeting and forecasting expertise within a large, complex organisation.
• Experience leading process improvement, harmonisation and finance transformation initiatives.
• Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and challenge senior leaders.
• Strong technical accounting knowledge, including FRS102.
• Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail and the ability to communicate complex financial information clearly.

Experience within Higher Education, knowledge of TRAC, Oracle Fusion or Power BI would be advantageous but is not essential.
