DCF are a small, local, family-founded charity focusing on supporting children and young people's wellbeing. We provide youth groups, workshops and 121 support in schools and in the community. 

We are looking for a Finance Trustee to lead on financial oversight of the charity, set up financial controls and processes and oversee our Treasurer.  

We currently have a lack of financial oversight which impacts on grant applications and planning.  We have a need for trustees with specific skillsets so that each board member can take ownership of their areas related to the charity.  Currently our CEO has a very active role within Board meetings and would benefit from support from proactive members.

We would like to grow the Board and create processes and procedures that diversify our income and sustainability. We currently deliver services in two boroughs (Croydon and Merton) and have a 5 year plan to expand to four boroughs.

This individual should have:

• Knowledge and experience of charity finance practices

The role will involve:

• Supporting the Treasurer

Edinburgh South East Foodbank are looking for someone with financial experience to join the Board as a Trustee to advise on financial matters, ensure we meet our financial obligations, and help us build a sound financial strategy.

What will you be doing?

This role involves leading on the financial affairs of the Foodbank and ensuring that they are conducted within the required legal, accounting, and good practice frameworks.

Key tasks:

• ensure the Board of Trustees fulfils its financial responsibilities
• ensure that the Foodbank has proper systems for budgeting, financial control, insurance and reporting
• inform the trustee board members of the finances of the Foodbank by written report, at least on a quarterly basis ensuring that the board have a clear picture of the financial health of the Foodbank

We are seeking an experienced treasurer who has a comprehensive understanding of charity finances, requirements and regulations and will actively support other board members to fulfil their collective responsibilities around finance.

You will play a pivotal role in ensuring the Gut UK’s ambitious growth plans are achievable, and sustainable for the long term. As a charity we need to do more, fund more, and support more people and we need a treasurer who shares our passion in achieving this.

• Overseeing the presentation of budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees.

As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. Terms of appointment

Terms of office

• Trustees are appointed for a 2 year term of office, renewal for 4 further terms to a maximum of 10 years.

• This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Time Commitment (Estimated at 7hours per week)

• Attending 4 Board meetings annually. Currently meetings are held remotely.

• Monthly scheduled meeting with the CEO with flexibility to respond swiftly to the occasional ad hoc issue.

Our partner is an impactful women’s rights organisation working to empower women, offering them agency promoting gender equality in public policy. They are currently facing financial pressures and are seeking the support of an experienced finance professional, working alongside the Director of Operations.

Your role will be to:

• Assess their financial sustainability, reviewing existing financial analysis and cost recovery model, highlighting immediate areas of concern to address, and advising on how to continue operations.
• Evaluate core costs (including overhead and hosting fee costs) and identify what is affordable/a target overhead % for the organisation to maintain, and potential cost-saving opportunities

Purpose of the Role

The Treasurer is a key member of the Board of Trustees, taking the lead in overseeing the financial health of the charity. They ensure proper financial management, reporting, and compliance with legal obligations, while supporting the Board to make sound financial decisions that enable the charity to achieve its mission in reptile welfare, conservation, and education.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership

• Monitor the financial standing of the charity and ensure effective financial controls are in place.

• Oversee the preparation of budgets, accounts, and financial statements.

• Ensure the Board understands the charity’s financial position and the implications of decisions.

• Chair the finance sub-committee (if applicable) and report key matters to the Board.

Compliance & Reporting

• Ensure compliance with charity law, company law (if applicable), and HMRC requirements.

• Oversee the preparation and submission of the annual report, accounts, and returns to the Charity Commission.

• Ensure financial policies and procedures are up to date and fit for purpose.

Support Fundraising & Sustainability

• Advise on the financial implications of the charity’s strategy, projects, and fundraising activities.

• Support the development of income streams and fundraising initiatives, ensuring they are financially viable.

• Monitor reserves and ensure a balance between short-term needs and long-term sustainability.

Working with Staff/Volunteers

• Liaise with staff or volunteers responsible for day-to-day financial operations (e.g. bookkeeping, invoicing, banking).

• Support the Chief Executive/Manager to ensure accurate and timely financial information is available.

• Provide guidance and training to Trustees to strengthen the Board’s financial literacy.

Person Specification

Essential Skills & Experience

• Financial qualifications or relevant experience (e.g. accountancy, bookkeeping, financial management).

• Experience of financial planning, budgeting, and reporting.

• Strong analytical skills and ability to explain complex financial information clearly.

• Understanding of the responsibilities of charity Trustees.

• Commitment to the values of animal welfare, conservation, and community engagement.

Desirable Skills & Experience

• Knowledge of charity SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice) and sector-specific financial regulations.

• Experience with fundraising, grant management, or financial oversight of charitable projects.

• Previous Board or Trustee experience.

Time Commitment

• 4-6 Board Meetings a year

• Regular review of management accounts, budgets, and financial policies.

• Availability to support staff/volunteers with finance-related queries.

• Attendance at occasional fundraising or community events.

Founded in 1997, the Islington Centre for Refugees and Migrants provides a place for refugees, migrants, and people seeking asylum to rebuild their life with support and community. From classes to casework to financial assistance, the Centre has a wide offering available for our community of over 200 people. Our approach is compassionate and human and the support we offer is long term - on average people stay with us around four years.

The current Board brings a wide range of charity and public body experience including strategy and fundraising and we are looking for skills to both enhance and complement these strengths.

The Centre has a dedicated and talented staff team led by our CEO, Andy Ruiz Palma, who joined in 2000 as an English teacher. In addition to this staff resource we have around 40 volunteers who provide direct support through activities. We also have in place accountancy support to the executive and a dedicated fundraising team.

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate a strong empathy with our client group and who understand how to work with organisations rooted in a local community. You will bring excellent people and communication skills and demonstrate good team-working.

We are open to applications from people looking for their first Trustee role or who may not have considered being a Trustee before and will provide mentoring to help trustees find their feet.

We are looking to recruit a deputy treasurer with:

A good understanding of financial management and reporting

A recognised accounting, finance or similar qualification

Ability to analyse and communicate financial information to the wider Board

Willingness to provide financial advice and support to the management team as needed

Knowledge and experience of fundraising finance practice in voluntary and community organisations (desirable)
