About us

Penificent is a business seeking to address issues faced by young people and to provide a positive influence through comics and workshops. Our books contain thought-provoking discussion questions directly related to the topic of the book, e.g. mental health, Knife crime etc. The books also have activities for young people to go through during a workshop or at home with their parents,keyworker,appropriate adult. These activities range from colouring to creating your own story that tackles a young person’s choice. Through user feedback, we have learnt that our comic story structure with the questions and activities promote more profound thought in young people than the average workbook or mainstream comic book. We currently run workshops in schools with our comics either in person (before Covid-19) or via zoom due to the pandemic. We have also run workshops with BBC Newsround ( Search: Penificent BBC Newsround) Quotes from Anti Knife crime newsround workshop (Adam 16,:"Living in a notorious area I think it stops me from doing many things like leaving my house and going out.

"Girl 16, who didn't want to be named, said: "I feel like you hear so much about knife crime, people begin to think that it's normal but the characters in this comic tell you there's a different way."), gained support from the Mayor of London and the Mayor of Southwark and also been featured in the Sunday time (Search: Penificent Sunday times)

What you will do

Role Description:

Nova Roots is a new out of hours community space for women 18+ leaving forensic mental health services, open 3 days a week; Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. We offer a safe, warm, non-judgemental social environment for women to build meaningful connections and have access to free activities and resources.

As a volunteer your role will be to support individuals using a peer approach by co-facilitating peer-led workshops, offering emotional and social support. By doing this, it provides an opportunity for service users to develop and manage meaningful and purposeful choices in an independent and empowered way.

We are looking for someone who

• Has lived experience of being in prison / mental health wards / rehab and recovery communities
• Are a non-judgemental and friendly individual
• To be able to provide a welcoming, authentic, and positive experience for all, being inclusive and embracing diversity
• To feel comfortable engaging with women with mental health challenges / difficult life experiences, by validating strengths and experiences and using empowering language to overcome negative self-talk
• Are empathic and understands the stigma / social bias's surrounding forensic leavers and their experiences
• Are willing to tap into their lived experiences and use their stories to inspire hope in others when appropriate
• Are comfortable with co-producing and co-facilitating peer led workshops
• To assist the Forensic Project Coordinator in the daily running of the Forensic Women’s hub
• Are able to take on any ad hoc admin/support responsibilities within the Forensic Women’s Hub

Time commitment and expenses:

Job Purpose

We are seeking an organised and detail-oriented individual to join our community energy group as a Secretary. As the Secretary, you will play a vital role in supporting the Chairperson and Board of Directors, as well as ensuring the smooth administration and financial compliance of the organisation. This voluntary position offers an opportunity to contribute to the success of our community energy initiatives and make a meaningful impact on sustainable development.

Responsibilities

Annual Duties

• Help organise the annual general meeting (AGM) in accordance with the society’s rules. It is usual for the AGM to take place within six months of the society’s year end in order for members to receive the accounts, and for them to be filed within seven months of the society’s financial year end. Usual AGM business includes:

  • Election of governing body members (usually directors) or the announcement of results if the election is held beforehand.

  • The receipt of balance sheets, accounts, the auditor’s report (if any) and consideration of any reports from the governing body.

  • The setting of any member subscription.

• Arrange for society accounts to be audited (if applicable)

• Send annual return and accounts to the FCA within seven months of society’s year end

• Display the society’s latest balance sheet

Continual Duties

• Keep a Register of Members at the registered office

• Keep minutes to record the proceedings of all meetings

• Ensure that the number of members does not fall below three

• If membership falls below three the registrar has the power to cancel the society’s registration.

• Provide each member with a free copy of the rules

• Give proper notice of all general meetings to all members and to the auditor

• Prepare and distribute meeting materials, reports, and other relevant documentation to board members in a timely manner.

• Assist in the coordination and execution of special events, workshops, and community engagement activities.

• Handle incoming and outgoing correspondence, including emails, letters, and phone calls, and ensure timely responses and appropriate follow-up actions.

• Draft and edit official communications, letters, and announcements on behalf of the organisation and the Chairperson.

• Maintain the organisation's contact database, keeping it up to date and accurate.

• Assist in managing the organisation's general email account and redirect inquiries to the appropriate individuals or teams.

Terms and Conditions

Upon taking the position, you will be required to sign a Director’s agreement including a commitment to attend monthly Board meetings and monthly wider volunteer meetings (giving reasonable notice if you cannot attend), and the agreement to log time spent on CCE activities.

You don’t need specific financial qualifications to be a Trustee Treasurer, but we are looking for someone with

• A strong background in finance

• a good understanding of the principles of sound financial management and strategic planning (essential)

• some knowledge or experience of charity finances, fundraising, financial consequences and pension schemes (useful)

• good numeracy skills to understand accounts

• an ability to explain complex financial information in an accessible way

A bit about this role...

Every penny counts when it comes to improving the lives of the thousands of cats and kittens across the UK that need our help each year. Our Collection Box Volunteers help us raise vital funds by collecting and distributing collection boxes in their local area. Making a difference can mean as little as raising 20p, which is enough to feed one cat in our care for a day, to £150 which is the average cost of a cat in our care.

What can I expect to be doing?

As a flexible role, you have the choice to be involved in the following:

• Researching local shops, pubs and businesses to place Collection Boxes
• Delivering Collection Boxes to locations
• Recording donations and thanking local businesses and supporters
• Collecting and replacing Collection boxes when they're full

About Disability Snowsport UK (DSUK) 

Disability Snowsport UK’s vision is of mountains and ski slopes free from barriers, where disabled people can learn and take part alongside family, friends and peers.

Our Mission 

To make snowsport accessible for everyone; regardless of disability, injury or experience. We work to remove the barriers to taking part so that disabled children and adults, and their families can enjoy the freedom, independence and the physical and wellbeing benefits of skiing and snowboarding, and related activities.

We do this by:  

• Providing expert adaptive teaching for individuals, families and groups across the UK 

• Providing holidays and activities in the UK and worldwide  

• Providing social and recreational skiing groups 

• Working with governing bodies, training organisations and partners to widen access, increase awareness and share knowledge 

The Role 

The role of the Trustee is to ensure the activities of the charity support its purpose and serve the interests of its beneficiaries. Trustees provide strategic guidance, governance and oversight of management, ensuring the organisation is accountable and acting as a ‘critical friend’ to the CEO. They are there to protect the charities assets both physical and reputational. They make sure resources are managed responsibly and that the charity is run sustainably.  

Currently an active board of 12, we are forward planning for routine board member rotation in 2025. To complement our existing board and support our strategic direction, we are looking for up to four additional trustees to bring knowledge, skills and experience in one or more of the following areas:

Lived Experience 

• This may include personal experience, of either being disabled or supporting someone with a disability e.g. a family member, caring for someone with a disability or working with people with disabilities.

• You will have an understanding of issues and barriers around participation, access and inclusion and their impact on health and wellbeing.  An understanding of the social model of disability is beneficial. 

Strategic Organisational Development / HR  

• Experience across the range of HR activity including recruitment, performance management, reward, organisation culture and change management.

• Experience of organisation design and development including board and senior leadership development and succession planning. 

• Board or committee experience with capability to take on the role of Chair of the Nomination, Remuneration and Governance Committee at a future date.

Legal Experience  

• Professional experience within a legal field. Experience in supporting organisations to ensure adherence to relevant laws, regulations and governing documents. 

• Ability to offer guidance and support compliance with charity law in the UK and other contractual obligations. 

In addition to the above areas, we are looking for someone with skills to take on the role of company secretary and would be interested in hearing from individuals who feel they could take up this role.
