As a community engagement volunteer you and your fellow branch members will create a range of activities to help spread the word about SSAFA within your community. To ensure that that our Armed Forces community know that SSAFA are here to help and that we need the public’s support to continue offering our services.

What you will be doing

This role is diverse and allows for you to focus on the areas that you have skills or interests in. The role has flexibility and can work around your other commitments.

Event Champions

Be the friendly face of SSAFA! Help at events, chat with visitors, sell merchandise, and spread the word about our work.

Promoting SSAFA Services

Help provide a warm, welcoming presence at Veterans Breakfast clubs, cafes or hubs - offering information about SSAFA services and signposting as appropriate.

Deliver engaging talks to organisations and groups, sharing SSAFA’s incredible history and mission.

Community Connectors

Collaborating with the Community Engagement Manager to establish a local network, promote SSAFA's services, and respond to community opportunities such as gardening projects

Fundraising Heroes

Whether it’s rallying local businesses, organising events, or getting creative with unique fundraising ideas, you’ll play a crucial role in keeping SSAFA’s support going strong.

Administrators

Are you detail-oriented and love keeping things organised? Assist with branch and event administration, manage schedules and branch calendars, and ensure everything runs smoothly currently being undertaken.

- You will have some experience in leading Zumba classes.

Overview

No Panic is a national charity, supporting people with a variety of anxiety issues, providing self-help advice over our helpline and additional support services.

We are building a team of volunteers to produce and distribute introduction material about No Panic to service users, members, students and volunteers.

We are looking for a volunteer to co-ordinate this team.

Activities

Activities will include reviewing the introduction material; assigning editing tasks to team members;  monitoring progress; reviewing content and overseeing distribution.

The Co-ordinator might also do the editing, if no volunteers are available.

We anticipate this volunteering will take up about 3-4 hours per week and ask our volunteers to commit to at least a year.

Desired Skills

Successful applicants will be committed and motivated.

They will be confident, and have leadership skills.

They will be able to produce and edit documents of varying lengths to a high standard and be able to write and communicate with clarity.

A reference will be required.

Support

The Introductions Team Co-ordinator will be supported by a Trustee.

The London Prisons Mission is an independent charity that supports and assists multi-faith Prison Chaplaincy teams; enables volunteers to work with those in prison and leaving prison; and to inform congregations about prisoners, their families, prison staff, victims of crime and issues concerning the criminal justice system.

The Mission has gone through a period of transition and we are looking to refresh the charity’s structures and activities to make it a more effective organisation for those we seek to serve.

The Chair of the Mission will direct this work and work with the LPM support group and the trustees to ensure that the Mission can fulfil its objectives. 
 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Volunteer Support and Recruitment:

• Refreshing the leadership structure of the Mission through the recruitment of new trustees to oversee our work
• Identify potential volunteering opportunities for interested members of church congregations (provided proper training and support is in place)

External Networking:

• Meet representatives of national organisations and prison reform groups to discuss volunteer opportunities and information sharing

Staying Informed:

• Keep up to date with developments in the criminal justice system (CJS), including reports from HM Inspectorates

Communication:

• Meet every two months with LPM support group. Share relevant information with management teams, chaplaincy teams (of all faiths), and partner churches

Relationship Building:

• Maintain contact with managing chaplains of partner prisons.
• Initiate contact with prisons which LPM might work with in the future and co-ordinate prison visits for the LPM support group

Church Engagement:

• Communicate regularly with partner churches to promote prison-related awareness and engagement within congregations

Events and Public Engagement:

• Lead on organisation of events like prisoner art shows and activities around Prisons Week
• Encourage faith communities to be more active in CJS issues

 You will work with the London Prisons Mission support group on all of the above, but will be expected to take a lead on all these responsibilities delegating where necessary

You’ll take some of the stress and anxiety out of getting around and taking part in activities as a blind or partially sighted person. The help you give will encourage people to do more.

What you’ll be doing
• Sighted guiding / giving practical help to individuals in and around venues, so they can take part in events.
• Supporting volunteers with sight loss with their volunteering activities which range from facilitating a regular community group to delivering a talk about sight loss to a local business. Your role would involve things like guiding; Meeting and greeting at group activities or creating a welcoming and interesting display stand at events.

In this role you will only be helping individuals in places open to the public, often in a group setting. We will provide training in sighted guiding techniques and understanding sight loss.
We would particularly like to recruit support volunteers within the Downpatrick area (last Wednesday of every month)

• This is a flexible role. The amount of time you offer can work to your availability and convenience.

• You will need your own transport if you wish to attend events, ideally a car or van since items, stock and equipment will usually be needed.
• We ask that you complete training to support you in your role. This can be completed online if you have access to the internet and the necessary device (computer/laptop/tablet etc). Support can be offered or paper versions of much of the training if needed.

This role will have the following duties, but are not limited to:

• Monitor Discord chats and threads to keep conversations safe, respectful and inclusive.

• Actively encourage discussion and help keep chats flowing by posting prompts, asking questions and joining in conversations.

• Maintain a positive presence online, ensuring members feel valued and engaged.

• Welcome new members, help them get settled and foster a sense of belonging.

• Share creative ideas to boost participation (e.g. themed discussion days, polls, mini-events, QOTDs).

• Support or host occasional online community events (e.g. group chats, Q&As, game nights, or discussion sessions) to bring members together.

• Collaborate with staff and volunteers to share feedback, insights and opportunities for community growth.

• Friendly, approachable and chatty communicator who enjoys starting and joining conversations.

• Enthusiastic about building an active and inclusive online space.

• Confident with Discord (or willing to learn) and comfortable with basic moderation tools.

How much commitment is required?

The role is flexible and can work around your current commitments.  On average it should take less than two-five hours per week depending on community activity and events.
