About the role
We are looking for a qualified veterinary surgeon/professional to support The Sussex
Reptile Rescue Centre as a trustee & advisor.

Our trustees play a vital role in ensuring the Sussex Reptile Rescue Centre achieves its core
charitable purpose, overseeing the charity’s overall management and administration.

By joining as a trustee, you will help determine the charity’s overall direction and development
as a strong advocate for The Sussex Reptile Rescue Centre and our work.

As you champion our cause, you’ll continuously strive for best practice in all areas of your
role whilst effectively evaluating and mitigating risks, and ensuring compliance to legal
obligations under charity law.

Qualifications and accreditations

• A qualified veterinary professional, with a specialisation in reptiles

Youth Advantage UK is a charitable organization that uses a research-led approach to inform policy work and projects that aim to promote and further the human rights of young people aged 11 to 25 across the United Kingdom.

Sight loss can be a big deal for many people: It often comes later in life and throws up many challenges. There can be a lot to get your head around and new things to learn. In this role you will help people who have had an initial contact with RNIB by sharing with them relevant information, including available services, ways to connect with others in a similar situation, and opportunities to play a positive role in removing barriers in society. In support of your conversation you will make brief, accurate notes in the customer contact record. In short, you’ll play an important role in helping people on the journey to living well with sight loss.

You will join a well-established, friendly team that make outbound calls to RNIB beneficiaries and supporters. This role can be done from home, with the ability to make calls at times that fit in with your schedule. We’re seeking a minimum commitment of four-six hours per week. Calls can be made between 12pm and 7pm. Full training will be given before you start making calls. We are seeking to recruit a group of volunteers that includes some individuals with lived experience of sight loss.

How you will be supported in your role
Comprehensive training will be given before you start making calls, and support will continue throughout your volunteering. The team you are joining is located across the UK. There are opportunities to connect with other volunteers and colleagues via MS Teams, including social “Kettle catchups”. The team meets twice a year in person, and you will be very welcome to take part.

Reliable broadband or ethernet as calls will be made through your internet connection. You’ll need a quiet and confidential space at home when making calls, so that neither your screen nor conversations are visible / audible to others in your household.

We are seeking a proactive, strategic, and mission-aligned Funding Manager to join our growing team. This pivotal role will lead on identifying, applying for, and managing multiple streams of funding to support the delivery and expansion of our work. As a small charity with big impact, funding is vital to everything we do — from running support services to delivering education and campaigning for change. The Funding Manager will be at the heart of ensuring our sustainability and growth by securing the resources we need. You will be line managed by the Chair of Trustees, and work closely with the Treasurer and other trustees as needed to complete applications, manage current funding applications and report on grant outcomes.
 

What are the key responsibilities of this role?

This role will have the following duties, but are not limited to:

• Identify and research suitable funding opportunities from trusts, foundations, statutory bodies, and other grant-makers

• Lead and coordinate the writing and submission of compelling funding bids, applications, and proposals.

• Manage and track existing grants, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements and deadlines.

• Work with trustees (e.g. Treasurer and Chair) to gather financial and impact data for applications and reports.

• Maintain a funding pipeline and reporting calendar, ensuring visibility of all application stages and deadlines.

• Build and maintain relationships with funders, providing updates on Hidayah’s work and impact.

How much commitment is required?

This is a voluntary role with flexible hours, and can be carried out around your existing commitments. We are results-focused, so while you have autonomy over when you volunteer, we ask that funding bids and key deadlines are met in a timely and reliable manner.

Every year, millions of phone calls made by people who stammer are mishandled. Callers are misunderstood, laughed at or hung up on. Voice recognition systems don’t recognise their speech. 

This can leave them being locked out of bank accounts, or unable to book GP appointments and get the help they need. It makes phone calls a nightmare. We’re here to stop this. 

Between November 2025 and October 2026, we will be providing free Zoom workshops to companies and organisations, where we will outline the steps needed to end the phone call nightmares. We are looking for volunteers who stammer to talk directly to businesses and help them understand how and why these changes are needed. Our Workshop Volunteers will be at the very front of our national Space to Stammer strategy, which forms part of our National Lottery work. It’s an exciting opportunity to join STAMMA as we grow and launch our new Phone Call Nightmares Campaign.

About the role

Working with our Training & Outreach team, we’re hoping that, following training, you’ll feel comfortable to: 

• Work within a pair to deliver pre-prepared workshops to a diverse audience of organisations. 

• Answer questions and facilitate discussion. The workshops will roughly comprise of 30mins of presentation, and 30mins open forum for discussion.

• Share and answer questions about your own experiences on phone calls. 

• Facilitate training with Zoom: taking turns in a pair to manage Zoom administrative functions such as switching on the captions, keeping an eye on questions in the chat box, allowing visitors into the session, muting/unmuting.

Who are we looking for?

You’re likely to enjoy volunteering in the Training & Outreach Service if you: 

• Enjoy public speaking and chatting with groups or would like to develop these skills. 

• Have or are interested in developing presentation skills. 

• Are comfortable both speaking and using the chat function in Zoom (or are happy to learn more about the platforms functionality). 

• Are comfortable sharing your personal experiences in relation to phone calls. 

• Have good time management skills – sessions will only last an hour, and every second counts! 

• Are passionate about making the world a better place for people who stammer. 

• Can commit to at least five sessions in advance.

For this role, it’s essential that you have a stammer. We think our message is best delivered directly from people who stammer, and your lived experiences will help make them sit up and listen.

You will need a quiet place where you can work in relative privacy and not be overheard during Zoom calls or telephone calls. You also need to have access to your own computer or laptop.

As a volunteer you can, of course, step back from the role at any time. However, both you and the service are likely to get most out of the opportunity if you’re able to volunteer with us for 12 months or more. By gradually learning and developing your confidence in the role, you can have the biggest impact.

Role Summary

Education Outreach Volunteers support the Reptile Centre by assisting with community education sessions, school visits, events, and public engagement activities. Volunteers help promote reptile welfare, conservation awareness, and responsible pet ownership. This role is ideal for people who enjoy working with the public, have an interest in animals, and want to make a positive impact in the community.

Key Responsibilities

Support Educational Sessions

• Assist staff during school visits, workshops, and community outreach events.

• Help set up and pack away educational materials, displays, and activity stations.

• Support the delivery of interactive demonstrations (with or without live animals, depending on training).

• Engage with visitors, answer basic questions, and help create a welcoming learning environment.

Animal Handling (Optional Based on Training)

• Handle reptiles safely during sessions once trained and approved by senior staff.

• Support welfare checks and ensure animals are comfortable during events.

• Help maintain safe handling practices with the public.

Community Engagement

• Represent the Reptile Centre positively at fairs, open days, fundraising events, and exhibitions.

• Share information about the centre’s conservation work, rescue stories, and how people can get involved.

• Encourage visitors to support fundraising campaigns and ongoing community initiatives.

Event Support

• Assist with coordinating groups during onsite and offsite sessions.

• Help manage queues, guide groups, and provide general visitor support.

• Prepare craft materials, activity sheets, or demonstration equipment.

Practical Support

• Help maintain the cleanliness and organisation of education and outreach equipment.

• Support the preparation of educational resources and displays.

• Assist with basic administrative tasks such as feedback collection or session records.

Skills & Qualities Needed

Essential

• Friendly, reliable, and comfortable speaking with the public.

• Enthusiastic about reptiles, wildlife, conservation, or animal education.

• Willingness to learn and follow safety and welfare guidelines.

• Good teamwork skills and a positive, helpful attitude.

Desirable

• Experience working with animals, children, or in an educational setting.

• Confidence handling reptiles (training will be provided).

• Knowledge of reptile care, conservation, or science communication.

• Minimum age (centre-specific, often 16+ or 18+).

• Willingness to undergo basic training and follow centre policies.

• Some roles may require a DBS check (depending on involvement with children).
