About the Role

This role sits within our Information and Advice team and is key to the smooth running of our Information and Advice service. This role will provide casework support relating to Adult Social Care, Housing, and Welfare Benefits to Disabled Merton Residents.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

1. To manage a varied caseload, providing accessible and quality information, advice, guidance and representation to Disabled people in Merton.

RCJ Advice is an exceptional Citizens Advice and Law Centre delivering national legal advice services, both frontline and second tier, to people who are unable to afford legal representation and advice. We are based within the Royal Courts of Justice, the Central London Family Court and community sites across London, where we deliver local Citizens Advice services.

This post is a new role within our Miscarriage of Justice Support Service, the only national service in England and Wales providing specialist support to people affected by miscarriages of justice. Our role is to support individuals whose criminal convictions have been quashed by the Court of Appeal. Many clients have spent many years, and sometimes decades, in prison before their convictions were overturned. As a result, many experience complex trauma, institutionalisation and significant challenges associated with release and reintegration.

Our work is grounded in the belief that those affected by miscarriages of justice deserve not only to have their convictions overturned, but to be supported with dignity, continuity, and recognition as they rebuild their lives. We offer long-term, person-centred, trauma-informed support tailored to the needs of each individual.

Working alongside the two MJSS Caseworkers, the specialist Mental Health Nurse will provide mental health assessments, psycho-social support and interventions to people affected by a serious miscarriages of justice.

The role includes support planning, delivery of interventions within professional competence, facilitating access to appropriate services, liaison with health and social care providers, and supporting individuals through key stages of their journey, including whilst waiting on their appeal to be heard (whilst still in prison), possible release from custody and community reintegration. The focus will be on MJSS clients but may expand to their family members or other close relations who can also be deeply affected by the client’s incarceration and subsequent release.

The two Caseworkers are based at our offices within the Royal Courts of Justice in London. The team meet clients in person initially, to build a relationship, which will involve travel across England and Wales. Once a relationship has been established, typically we then communicate via telephone and online, but people may still need in-person support e.g. attending appointments with them.

Ideally the post-holder would come into the office at least several times a month to build and maintain an excellent working relationship with the Caseworkers, giving the option to work at other times from home or to travel. Travel for this role will vary according to the needs of each client, but we expect this to be round once a fortnight. All travel expenses will be paid by RCJ Advice.

Overview of the role

The Senior Caseworker – MD Lead plays a dual role in delivering high-quality casework services while providing specialist support and guidance to colleagues working with guests experiencing multiple disadvantages. The role provides advice, advocacy and casework support to a caseload of guests across our homelessness and vulnerable housing services, with a particular focus on those presenting with long-term, complex and multiple needs.  The postholder will share their knowledge, skills and experience to support colleagues, strengthen their understanding of complex needs, and develop their confidence and ability to work effectively with guests. The role will also contribute to a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach, ensuring guests receive coordinated, person-centred support.

1. Advice and advocacy

· Providing an advice and advocacy service to a caseload of guests from across all our services for the homeless and vulnerably housed who present with long-term and complex needs, caseworking a smaller and more consistent caseload than other members of the team but working with them more intensively. 

· Employing creative thinking and practices to ensure that guests are supported and motivated to achieve their goals, primarily to access and maintain accommodation and develop durable support networks 

· Attending appointments with guests as needed and carrying out home visits 

· Working with Caseworker colleagues to strengthen their understanding of complex needs, developing their confidence and ability to work effectively with guests

4. Women’s Night Shelter lead

· Responsible for the day-to-day leadership and coordination of the casework provided to the women’s night shelter over the winter months.

· Ensuring that women accessing the service receive high-quality, person-centred support, advice and advocacy, both by taking on a caseload of clients and supporting the other caseworkers involved in the women’s night shelter. Helping guests to address immediate needs, while supporting them to access appropriate housing, health, welfare, legal and other specialist services.

· Participating in a weekly casework drop-in for guests of the women’s night shelter over winter; providing a safe, welcoming and trauma-informed environment to deliver casework to women experiencing homelessness, insecure housing and multiple disadvantages.

· Maintaining all safeguarding and risk management protocols.

5. Monitoring impact and administration

· Collating statistics and outcome measurements of the casework service for both internal and external use 

· Maintaining a well-organised and easily accessible administration system for the casework programme in line with relevant legislation (e.g., GDPR), including accurate and up-to-date case notes using our internal In-Form system 

· Adherence to all Glass Door policies and procedures, including compliance with safeguarding procedures 

· Managing a small casework budget 

· Proactively identifying areas for improvement and development of service provision

St Giles is expanding its delivery of hospital-based projects; this service is aimed at vulnerable 12 to 25-year-olds who attend the adult or paediatric emergency department or Urgent Care Centre at Northwick Park Hospital. We will work alongside hospital staff to proactively identify vulnerable young people and help them to access and engage the support they need to prevent any potential escalation of violence and reduce the risk of repeat victimisation or exploitation.

About this key role

You will be embedded in the hospital, providing support for those young people admitted to emergency departments right through to their discharge back into the community. This support extends post-discharge from the ED or Hospital with our Caseworkers working with the CYP and the professional networks to ensure the CYP voice is front and centre, this is to support the betterment of the CYP and their future, as well as reducing risks. This is done through providing 121 support in formulating the support plan with the CYP. This can also include supporting the family and advocating for them and CYP within the wider professional network.

• Proven experience of providing support, advice and advocacy and communicating the needs of clients to other professionals

About You

The Women’s Caseworker provides proactive short-term support and casework to female victim-survivors of sexual violence. You will work as part of a growing feminist Rape Crisis service that is developing to meet the needs of women and girls. This post involves travel across East London, and a hybrid model of home, outreach and office working.

We’re looking for a highly organised and self-motivated woman who is passionate about ending violence against women, girls and children. You’ll have a ‘can-do’ approach and demonstrable commitment to nia’s feminist approach to supporting women and girls. We particularly encourage applications from Black, Asian and minoritised women, young women with lived experience and those who have experience of accessing services as a young woman/girl.

Hours: 35 hours per week (including 1 evening per week and Saturday mornings on a rota basis)

Salary: £29,000- £32,000 dependent on experience and qualification

Working with one of our trusted partner day centres on an initial 12 month contract,  The post holder will be responsible for the following:

· Providing a specialist advice and advocacy service to the homeless guests of our services, which include partner day centres and night shelters over the winter season

· Employing creative thinking and practices to ensure that guests are supported and motivated to achieve their goals

· Attending appointments with guests occasionally when needed

· Referring and signposting guests to accommodation providers, health services and other relevant internal and external support services, as necessary

· Maintaining good communication with the Managers of our partnered Drop-in Centres, Glass Door colleagues and local statutory and non-statutory services

· Attending meetings with the casework team, external service providers and partner organisations when required

· Collating statistics and outcome measurements of the casework service for both internal and external use

· Maintaining a well-organised and easily accessible administration system for the casework programme in line with relevant legislation (e.g. GDPR)

· Managing a small casework budget

· Undertaking any other duties to aid the good running of the project, as required by the charity

Person Specification

Essential

· At least one year experience of working one-on-one with -- and assessing the needs of -- homeless people or similar disadvantaged client groups

· Empathetic attitude to homeless and vulnerably-housed people

· Up-to-date knowledge of the welfare issues and legislation affecting homeless people

· Knowledge of relevant support services available to homeless people, particularly in West London

· Confident approach to, and experience of, dealing with challenging behaviour

· Ability to maintain good relationships with colleagues and external service providers

· Highly organised with strong time-management skills

· Ability to keep clear and up-to-date case records

· Ability to work independently and take the initiative to make important decisions

· Flexible and supportive team member with excellent communication skills

· Ability to adhere to and implement Health & Safety, HR and operational policies

· Understanding of and commitment to Equal Opportunities

· For night shelter caseworkers, willingness to work a minimum of one evening per week

Desirable

· Ability to speak Polish, Romanian or other Eastern European languages

· Experience of working alongside volunteers

About the role

Coram Children’s Legal Centre is looking for a new Paralegal to join our dedicated, friendly and highly experienced Immigration & Asylum team.

The successful candidate will assist solicitors and senior caseworkers in providing legal advice and representation to primarily legal aid funded clients, including children and young people, parents, carers and others in relation to their immigration & asylum needs.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a keen interest in upholding the rights of vulnerable children and young people who is seeking to progress their legal aid career in the charity sector. Our fee earners benefit from a good work-life balance and realistic financial and chargeable hour targets.

Our immigration lawyers work closely with colleagues in other teams in the Legal Practice Unit (community care, family and education law), as well as with other departments within the Coram group, including Coram Voice and the Policy Team. As well as conducting casework for individuals, our immigration & asylum team undertakes strategic litigation for the wider benefit of children, young people and families, and has participated in several interventions in the higher courts.

The successful candidate should be highly organised and able to use their initiative to complete tasks independently, however we also offer excellent supervision and training opportunities, and we support all our employees in their career progression.
