Job description

We are seeking a very experienced and passionate community development expert to help us to support the four Big Local community projects we work with in London.

Big Local is a national initiative run by Local Trust, providing 150 communities across England with £1m each to use as they see fit. Funding is long term, resident-led and non-prescriptive; an opportunity for skilled and passionate local people to build capacity and confidence to make decisions on what is best for their area.

Quaker Social Action (QSA) supports four Big Local projects as a Local Trusted Organisation (LTO). These are Aberfeldy Big Local in Tower Hamlets, Pimlico Million in Westminster, Plaistow South Big Local in Newham and Barnfield Big Local in Greenwich.

This spread of work across London offers an opportunity for the post holder to make an amazing difference to four very diverse areas of London, with differing challenges and an array of ambitions. This spans work on advocacy and power, to green spaces, to young people, to employability, to running a community hub, to addressing isolation – and more.

As the LTO for these areas, QSA's key function is accountability back to the funder; we hold the funds for each Big Local and release them when we are satisfied that spending decisions are agreed by the partnership board, within Big Local guidelines and aligned with their current plan.

But we at QSA want to do so much more than this, and offer the benefit of our professional expertise to aid in all sorts of ways; supporting recruitment of new staff or bringing in new volunteers, advising on decision-making for the partnership boards and on setting up robust, costed, exciting community development initiatives across the four areas.

The key skill for this role is problem-solving. All manner of issues and opportunities can come up in community development work, and you will need to think both quickly but carefully about the best way forward in each of these instances. You’ll also need to be excellent at managing your time and being as responsive as possible to each area, but keeping within the remit of our role and your working hours.

The key value for this role is respect. The Big Local programme is a resident-led initiative, meaning that the dozen staff employed across these four areas are all accountable to their partnership boards, but employed by QSA. You will need to respect the different strengths and perspectives of each of these stakeholder groups and be an excellent and diplomatic negotiator.

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who bring lived experience from a geographical community stigmatised as being “disadvantaged”, or from a part of the community that has been excluded from power and advantage on ground of race, religion, age, gender, sexual identity, disability, class, neurodiversity or lived experience.
