The Refugee Council works in the UK with asylum seekers and refugees. Our operational teams based in various locations in England provide advice and assistance across a wide range of issues, including helping asylum seekers through the complexities of the asylum system, addressing issues of destitution and assisting refugees and asylum seekers to access key services including housing, welfare benefits, health, education and employment.
We operate four main teams, Resettlement, Therapeutic, Integration and Unaccompanied Children’s teams. Our teams work with relevant agencies including the Home Office, Refugee Community Organisations, Local Authorities, Legal Service Providers, Housing Providers, Health Institutions, Job Centre Plus and other mainstream service providers.
The Social Integration Assistant is a newly created post within the Integration Services team at the Refugee Council. The Integration Services team works with newly recognised refugees during the often difficult process of transitioning from asylum support to mainstream services. It focuses its support in helping individuals and families struggling to rebuild their lives in a new and unfamiliar country.
The team’s Integration Advisers work with those who have just been granted status and seeks to address urgent issues relating to housing, welfare and health. Our Employment Advisers are there to help people who have been here slightly longer and are at the stage where they are ready to take the next steps towards employment and financial independence. The Social Integration Assistant will provide a link between these two support elements. The postholder will work with the broader team. The delivery of a Conversation Club will be central to the initial engagement with topics for further activities, workshops and events decided by the group depending on their identified needs.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Social Integration delivery
- To develop and initiate weekly Conversation Club group sessions for refugees looking to improve their English, improve their understanding of the systems and culture in the UK and overcome challenges they may be experiencing as a result of being granted refugee status.
- To facilitate the delivery of the weekly Conversation Clubs in a friendly, supportive and collaborative manner ensuring that all participants have a voice and feel fully engaged in sharing their aspirations and challenges and are helped to define and shape the kind support they feel they would benefit from.
- To carry our social integration assessments with all new learners in order to create personal plans
- To support Social Integration Coordinator with social integration activities which build on participants’ assets, is client led and encourages peer volunteering and leadership.
- To elicit client feedback and input (using a range of mechanisms) in the identification and development of workshops and activities which meet their needs.
- To develop a good understanding of the issues affecting newly recognised refugees and the barriers that can prevent them from integrating effectively
- To support individuals (with the assistance of volunteers) to progress towards achieving their personal goals and aspirations. Being clear about when to refer to specialist advice and support services (internally and externally) where issues are identified that fall beyond the scope of the project.
- To develop a comprehensive range of workshops for the Conversation Clubs that address common issues relating to areas such as housing, health, welfare, wellbeing, education, families, education, training and employment.
- To focus on the delivery activities and lessons that can improve the English language levels of participants during their daily lives especially where it can support individuals to better advocate for themselves.
- To support Social Integration Coordinator with organising a range of outings and events which allow participants to engage in areas of life they might otherwise miss out on. This is likely to include areas such as art & cultural activities, exercise, sports, wellbeing activities, and other opportunities to mix and socialise with people ideally from a range of backgrounds.
Co-ordination
- To support Social Integration coordinator in creating effective relationships within the refugee sector and wider voluntary sector to ensure our clients have access to the support we offer but will also allow us to access high quality and effective support through other specialist agencies and services.
- To deliver services in a manner that is convenient for our clients and appropriate to their specific needs. This may mean delivering on an outreach bases from a variety of locations across Hull
- To work effectively with colleagues to ensure that we are providing a joined up service that supports individuals on their journey towards building a more positive future.
- To supervise volunteers who will play a role in supporting the post holder in the delivery of conversation classes

Carrying out risk assessments of your own work and especially of your own workstation to ensure that you do not expose yourself or others to unnecessary risk.
Flexibility
In order to deliver services effectively, a degree of flexibility is needed and the post-holder may be required to perform work not specifically referred to above. Such duties will, however, fall within the scope of the job, at the appropriate grade. Night Support Workers will provide Housing Related Support to tenants to help them develop the life skills that are required to meet the assessed needs of the tenants of the service. Support needs may include mental health, substance misuse, care experience, and complex needs.
Night Support Workers will also carry out the necessary duties to ensure the building and the young people are safe and deal with any issues and crisis/incidents during their waking 12 hour shift throughout the night. You will be generally working with out of hours external agencies to ensure a person centred support package is in place.

Our Black Country24/7 Helpline service is the first main point of access for members of the public wanting or requiring direct access to mental health services, support, or advice. The service does not replace all other points of access but will function to serve all and eradicate the need for people to be signposted, where the ability to provide direct access can be facilitated. The helpline is open for people of all ages, available 24 hours a day, 7 days week, 365 days per year, providing immediate access to advice, emotional support, and triage.

What will you be doing?
- Monitoring and reporting when required on the effectiveness of support delivery and contract performance.
- Supporting and guiding staff and volunteers ensuring they have the knowledge, information, and resources to be successful in their roles and make a positive and valued contribution to the service.

Do you have what we are looking for?
- The ability to make a comprehensive assessment of an individual’s situation and needs; to develop, implement and review risk management plans and devise support plans and activities to meet these needs.
- Experience of providing support to people with a mental illness; or experience of providing care and/or support services within another social care setting in either a paid or voluntary capacity.
- Experience of leading and supporting a team effectively.
- A strong working knowledge of mental health and appropriate intervention methods QCF Diploma or NVQ level 3 in Care or Certificate in Community Mental Healthcare (or working towards) or an equivalent qualification.
- Experience of providing support to people with severe mental illness in a community or helpline setting
- Diploma or certificate in Counselling or equivalent accredited qualification

The Crescent is a mental health supported accommodation service that operates a ‘Core and Cluster’ model with a total of 27 units. The team offer a Person Centred and Recovery based approach to include supporting those with other secondary issues such as substance misuse, offending behaviour and mild learning difficulties.

The First Contact Navigator service is run by SERICC in partnership with SOS Rape Crisis and Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse (CARA) providing a single point of access into specialist sexual violence and abuse support services.
Navigators support victims and survivors of sexual violence and sexual abuse to access bespoke assistance around their needs including support with advocacy, counselling, criminal justice, drugs and alcohol support, housing, etc. The Navigators work with survivors across Essex. The role is a fast-paced role delivering short-term intensive casework to survivors, and in some instances, advocating on their behalf with statutory and non-statutory services.
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced practitioner to work in an innovative fast paced service which improves responses, access and support for survivors of sexual violence in Essex.
