Beyond the Horizon is a Birmingham-based children’s charity supporting young people after bereavement, family breakdown, and domestic abuse. We’re looking for an experienced Finance Manager to join our small, dedicated team.

The Finance Manager is responsible for the effective financial management of Beyond the Horizon Charity. The role requires close attention to detail, strong analytical ability and a proactive approach to maintaining accurate, timely, and compliant financial information.

As a small but dynamic organisation with multiple income streams, including grants, donations, commissioned work and fundraising, the postholder must have previous experience of managing and reporting across varied funding sources.

We are looking for an experienced Legacy and Tribute Manager who will be responsible for generating around £1.4 million annually through compassionate and professional management of Gifts in Wills and Tribute Giving. You will lead, shape and deliver RUHX’s Legacy & Tribute Programme—one of our most impactful income streams that enables supporters to honour exceptional care given at the RUH.

We’re looking for an experienced legacy fundraising professional with a strong track record in generating income through Gifts in Wills, creating inspiring marketing campaigns, and managing complex legacy administration with confidence and accuracy. You will bring proven expertise in handling sensitive donor relationships, working with solicitors and executors, and navigating legal processes with minimal guidance.

Stand-by-me Bereavement Support (SBM) is an award-winning charity based in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. We support children and young people who have suffered bereavement through therapeutic group work, support for parents and carers and ‘Contact-me’, our school framework for supporting bereaved pupils. 

Role Overview 

The Bereavement Support Manager oversees the Contact-me programme. They introduce, train and help implement the programme within the school setting, ensuring the delivery of high-quality support services for pupils affected by bereavement.

They partner with the Clinical Services Manager to deliver SBM’s therapeutic groupwork programme, supporting assessments and leading the Parents/Carer sessions that run alongside.

Key Responsibilities 

Contact-me 

• Oversee the Contact-me programme, ensuring it meets the needs of bereaved children, their families, school and healthcare professionals.

• Introduce, train and help implement the programme within the school setting, providing ongoing guidance to ensure the delivery of high-quality support services. 

• Collaborate with key stakeholders to enable a holistic, ‘team around the family’ approach to bereavement support services.

• Continuously evaluate the programme’s impact, making recommendations and implementing improvements as appropriate. 

Groupwork 

• Partner with the Clinical Services Manager to deliver SBM’s therapeutic groupwork programme, organising programmes, supporting assessments and leading the Parents/Carer sessions that run alongside. 

• Collect quantitative and qualitative information to inform SBM and meet the requirements for reporting to funders. 

• Continuously evaluate the programme’s impact, making recommendations and implement improvements as appropriate. 

Core 

• Act as an ambassador for SBM, promoting available services and contributing to the development and implementation of expanded and/or new programmes. 

• Collaborate with SBM’s staff and trustees to support reporting, upskilling and compliance requirements. 

Requirements & Qualifications  

• Relevant qualification(s) in counselling, social work or a related field 

• Experience working within a multi-therapy setting 

• Experience working with children and young people (within a support or educational setting preferred) 

• A strong understanding of bereavement issues and their impact on children and families 

• Empathetic and emotionally resilient, able to sensitively navigate conversations with children and families in distress; committed to using supervision and team check-ins to process the emotional impact of bereavement work 

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to build rapport with children, young people and adults 

• Excellent presentation and facilitation skills, able to deliver compelling training and facilitate meaningful groupwork sessions 

• A collaborative and flexible approach to work, with a willingness to ‘muck in’ and support SBM’s wider goals 

• Strong organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to juggle multiple streams of work 

• Knowledge of safeguarding practices and child protection policies

Context of role:

The Headof Finance & Business Services will be a key member of the senior leadership team, responsible for ensuring the charity is financially sustainable, legally compliant and operationally efficient.

This role provides strategic oversight of finance, governance, HR, IT, facilities, risk management, and business administration, enabling the charity to deliver its mission effectively and responsibly.

Line management responsibilities, including Business Services Officer and Finance and Administration Officer.

Key responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

• Act as a senior advisor to the CEO and Board of Trustees on financial strategy, organisational performance, risk, and governance.
• Lead on the development and implementation of long-term financial plans, budgets, and business services strategies.
• Contribute to organisational planning, change management, and culture-building across the charity.

Financial Management

• Oversee all aspects of financial management, including grants and foundations, forecasting, management accounts, statutory accounts, and cashflow.
• Ensure accurate financial reporting in compliance within the Charity SORP, and relevant regulatory frameworks.
• Lead on financial risk management, reserve’s policy, investment planning, and financial controls.
• Oversee payroll, pension administration, procurement, and contract management.
• Support fundraising colleagues with financial modelling, grant budgets, and reporting to funders.

Business Services Oversight

• Lead and develop the business services function, which include IT, facilities, data protection and health & safety.
• Oversee HR policies, employee relations, recruitment processes, and wellbeing initiatives with the support of our HR consultants.
• Ensure reliable IT systems, digital security, and effective use of Microsoft 365 and organisational software with the support of our IT consultants ITCS.
• Manage the Business Services Officer who oversees office facilities, leases, equipment, and supplier relationships.
• Hold line management responsibilities for our Business Services Officer and Finance and Administration Officer.

Leadership and People Management

• Provide inspirational leadership to finance and business services staff.
• Support a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, compassion, and teamwork.
• Champion organisational values, equity, diversity, and inclusion in all areas of operations

General:

• To be responsible for organising own work agenda, time management and administration.
• To adhere to all company policies and procedures including Safeguarding, Confidentiality, Health and Safety and Lone Working; and to be proactive in implementing new safe working practices as appropriate.
• To attend weekend and evening community events in support of the charity as necessary.
• Participate as and when required in team meetings and one-to-one meetings, and undertake, as appropriate, courses/training/other developmental activities, which is relevant to the role.

It is the nature of the work that tasks and responsibilities are in may circumstances unpredictable and varied. All employees are therefore expected to work in a flexible way and tasks, which are not specifically covered in their job description may have to be undertaken.

Person specification:

Essential

• Fully or part qualified in accountancy or qualified by experience (QBE).
• Proven financial leadership experience within the third sector or a, challenging values-driven organisation.
• Strong understanding of charity finance, including SORP, restricted/unrestricted, designated funds, grant applications and reporting.
• Experience of managing governance, risk, compliance, and business administrative functions.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship building skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively whilst providing strong challenge and professional insight.
• Demonstrable commitment to the mission and values of 2wish.
• Assist with compliance of the Equality Act, Employment Rights Act / Bill & General Data Protection Regulations.

Desirable

• Experience supporting or working alongside a Board of Trustees.
• Experience leading digital transformation or implementing new systems.
• Understanding bereavement-support environments

What we do for you:

Contract type: Permanent

Hours: Normal office hours are 9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday, although alternative hours may be worked with line manager agreement. Work outside office hours may sometimes be necessary and will be compensated for by time off in lieu.

Annual leave: 28 days plus bank holidays. Annual leave steadily increases after five years of service. Annual leave and statutory holidays are calculated on a pro rata basis where applicable.

Pension: 2wish operate a contributory pension scheme. 2wish will auto-enrol you into the scheme in accordance with it’s auto-enrolment obligations. • Maintain accurate and confidential HR files, absence records, training logs, and performance documentation on Bright HR.

• Maintain statutory registers and ensure timely filing of required documents.

• Oversee day-to-day management of office space, equipment, and environment. Monitoring potential growth of office spaces into England.

• Monitor office supplies, equipment maintenance, and procurement.

Administration and Organisational Support

• Provide administrative support to the Senior Leadership Team where required.
• Maintain central records, filing systems, and registers to a high standard both electronically and paper based.

General:

• To be responsible for organising own work agenda, time management and administration.
• To adhere to all company policies and procedures including Safeguarding, Confidentiality, Health and Safety and Lone Working; and to be proactive in implementing new safe working practices as appropriate.
• To attend weekend and evening community events in support of the charity as necessary.

About the role:

Strategic and day-to-day management of our busy and sector-leading Online Bereavement Community to ensure it grows and develops in line with organisational priorities. Our community provides a safe but vibrant place for those who have been bereaved or who are caring for somebody at the end of their life to share their story, find support and support others.

The role includes developing new online services within the online community platform that relate to the organisation’s aim of supporting people at a most difficult time.

About you:
As Online Community Manager, you will manage and nurture an active online forum where people can share experiences and connect with others who are grieving. Working closely with colleagues across Digital, Marketing and our Grief and Bereavement teams, you will ensure the community remains a safe and supportive space, while continuing to grow and reach more people who need support.

You’ll be passionate about the power of online communities to connect and support people. You’ll combine strong community management and moderation skills with empathy and emotional intelligence, enabling you to engage sensitively with people who are grieving.

Essential Criteria
• Demonstrable experience of day-to-day online community/forum management, including moderation, to support service users
• A good understanding of UX and how the user journey contributes to an optimum experience for community members
• Experience in tracking and monitoring platform usage to identify areas for improvement and optimisation
• Experience of working with or managing volunteers
• Ability to use insights and analytics tools, such as Google Analytics and Hotjar
• Understanding of email newsletter best practice to maximise engagement
• Experience of managing an external moderation agency
• A strong understanding of service user audiences and their behaviours online

Desirable Requirements
• Experience using Discourse to manage online communities and DotDigital to manage email communications

• Experience and confidence in building rapport and trust with prospective major donors
