Breast Cancer UK’s vision is a world where everyone is empowered to reduce their breast cancer risk. Our mission is to lead a movement to empower individuals, advance scientific research and reshape policy to reduce breast cancer risk for all.
We are the only UK breast cancer charity focused entirely on the primary prevention of breast cancer by funding animal-free scientific research into the causes of breast cancer, campaigning to reduce risk, using traditional and digital channels to raise awareness. Today it is estimated that 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with the disease at some point in their lives but at least 30% breast cancers are thought to be preventable.
Our research and advocacy work focuses on the environmental and chemical causes of breast cancer. Our education programme and advice include all preventable risk factors.
Our strategic Plan (2025-2028) is a bold and forward-looking roadmap that aims to drive lasting change for breast cancer prevention through significantly increasing the visibility of our cause by expanding our research and collaborations, expanding access to prevention education across the UK and mobilising support behind a new policy approach that prioritises prevention.The trustee role is critical in supporting these outcomes.
Breast Cancer UK’s annual income has grown from £107,000 (31.3.2014) to £1.5M (31.3.2024). Our new strategic plan sets out our ambition to expand further.

ShowerBox is a registered charity dedicated to providing free, safe showers and essential supplies to people experiencing homelessness. Our mission is to create a welcoming environment that restores dignity, improves wellbeing, and helps to reduce isolation. Founded by our CEO, Sarah Lamptey, in response to the urgent need for accessible hygiene facilities, ShowerBox began in 2018 as a grassroots initiative and became a registered charity in 2021. What are we looking for?
We are seeking a dynamic and committed Chair to lead ShowerBox into its next phase of growth. Building on the success achieved since becoming a CIO and expanding to three locations, the Chair will work closely with the CEO to shape the organisation’s future and strengthen its impact.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing effective strategic leadership to the Board, ensuring sound governance and clear direction.
- Supporting and constructively challenging the CEO, while holding them accountable for delivering agreed objectives.

- Acting as an ambassador for ShowerBox, representing the charity externally and serving as a spokesperson when appropriate.

We are looking for someone who can bring:
- A strong commitment to supporting people experiencing homelessness and hygiene poverty.
- Previous experience as a Trustee or Board member (experience as a Chair of a voluntary organisation is highly desirable).
- A solid understanding of the legal, financial, and governance responsibilities of trusteeship.
- Strong leadership and people management skills, with the ability to chair meetings effectively.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with a collaborative approach.
- The time, energy, and commitment to support a small but growing charity.
Time commitment and terms:
- The Chair of Trustees is appointed for a renewable term of two years.
- Expected time commitment: up to two days per month, with flexibility for additional time during new projects or unexpected challenges.
- Board meetings are held four times a year (mostly online), with occasional subcommittees and events depending on interest and expertise.
- This is an unpaid voluntary role; reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

Recovery Partners are a small user-led mental health charity working across East Sussex. All of our staff have lived experience of mental health challenges. What will you be doing?

Working with people in disadvantaged areas to clean up and strengthen their community
CleanupUK is a small charity with big aspirations. We use the activity of litter-picking to support people living in disadvantaged areas to form litter-picking groups – not only to keep their neighbourhood clean but also to bring the community together.

We are a UK healthcare charity, now in our 34th year. We provide a myriad of services in Essex and Medway; drug and alcohol support, homelessness services, domestic abuse support, criminal justice services, employment support, welfare and community initiatives to promote community safety and combat anti-social behaviour. We help vulnerable people, young and old, throughout Essex and Medway, and work in the heart of local communities. We are not a large national faceless charity; we are very much a grassroots organisation. We fully embrace and utilise our local knowledge and expertise, working with likeminded partners to support as many people as possible to have healthier, happier lives in the heart of their families and communities.

How Do Open Road’s Trustees Support The Charity?
The role of the Trustee is to assist in advancing the purpose of the organisation; developing its aims and goals, keeping within its charitable objectives and acting in its best interests. The board members ensure that the charity is run in accordance with its governing document, charity law, and any other laws and regulations which affect its activities.
Our Trustee Board are responsible for developing strategy, providing governance, and directing the charity towards achieving its mission. We are looking to appoint two new trustees – the first being from the building and maintenance sector – with the experience and knowledge to support the health and safety responsibilities of a growing charity, and the second being a HR professional who will chair our Personnel Sub Committee with special responsibility for oversight of the organisation’s HR function and strategy, ideally you will be a Chartered Member or Fellow of the CIPD with substantial experience at a Senior/Director HR professional level with a thorough understanding of operational HR policy and practice.
An understanding of the role of charity boards and their responsibilities and operation, gained through previous experience would be helpful, and above all else you will be intrinsically values-driven and committed to enabling more individuals we support to live their lives to the full.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT – Charity Trustee
REMUNERATION:
- This role is unremunerated and offered on a voluntary basis.
- Trustees are encouraged to visit services that are local to them.
- Travel and accommodation expenses are reimbursed for meetings & visits.
TIME COMMITMENT:
- The time commitment is at least one day a month.
- There are six board meetings a year and this includes an annual strategy setting day.
- Board meetings are held in person in Central London.
- All trustees are expected to participate on at least one committee and there are four committee meetings a year.
- Committee meetings are held in person/virtually.
Key responsibilities:
- To take part in formulating and regularly reviewing the strategic aims of the
- organisation.
- Working with other trustees to ensure that the policy and practices of the organisation
- are in keeping with its aims.
- Working with other trustees to ensure that the organisation functions within the legal and financial requirements of a charitable organisation and strives to achieve best practice.

Responsibilities (specific to your role):
- Help to develop and approve the charity's fundraising strategy, ensuring it aligns with the charity's overall goals and values.
- Ensure compliance, taking responsibility for ensuring the charity's fundraising activities comply with all relevant laws and regulations, including those set by the Fundraising Regulator and the Charity Commission.
- Manage any risks associated with fundraising activities, including conflicts of interest, and ensuring the charity's reputation is protected.
- Trustees have a responsibility to scrutinize the fundraising budget and ensure that fundraising activities are properly funded and monitored.
- Trustees play a key role in ensuring the charity's fundraising activities are conducted ethically and in accordance with the Fundraising Code.
