About the role:
The Zone Plymouth is seeking a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. This vital voluntary role provides strategic oversight of the charity’s finances, ensuring robust financial management, transparency, and compliance with charity law and best practice.
The Treasurer will:
- Ensure that The Zone has effective financial management, robust financial controls, and clear financial reporting in line with charity law and best practice.

We are currently looking to recruit an external trustee to join our Board of Trustees and also act as chair to the Finance and Audit Sub-Committee. We will also require the trustee to support our whistleblowing policy, acting as the nominated trustee contact for whistleblowing concerns. Your SU is overseen by our Board of Trustees, and our trading subsidiary (CUSU Services Ltd) is overseen by our Commercial Services Board . They are both made up of a collection of our elected Officers, students, university staff and external professionals that ensure the Charity and the Trading Subsidiary remain sustainable in terms of finance, legality and reputational status.
You will be expected to attend Board meetings 4 times per year – these will be a mix of in person and Teams meetings. You will also be expected to support at least one sub-committee of the Trustee Board (3-4 times per year) as well as complete training and induction. You will need some time to allow for prereading of reports and other documentation before meetings.
Trustee meetings are typically held on a Friday afternoon 1pm-4pm. Most of the meetings are online, although you would be offered travel expenses for any face-to-face meetings (and hybrid meetings are usually offered if you do need to join remotely.) There is also a strategy day once a year as well as the occasional social activity!
For this trustee role, we are looking for an experienced professional ideally with third-sector governance experience. In addition to being a member of the Board of Trustees the trustee will be required to chair the Finance and Audit subcommittee and should possess a strong finance background with analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex financial information.

The role of trustees and the Treasurer
Being a trustee is a rewarding role. Trustees are volunteers who bring their expertise to shape our strategy and direction, and help ensure we remain an authoritative organisation on LGBTQI+ asylum and immigration. They have overall legal responsibility for the charity, make sure our finances and resources are well used to implement our mission, and are required to participate fully in the governance of the charity. Trustees also play a role as ambassadors for the organisation and our work.
The Treasurer takes a lead role in ensuring Rainbow Migration’s financial affairs are conducted within legal requirements, accounting conventions and good practice to ensure the financial viability and sustainable development of the organisation. Time commitment
We are looking for people who can commit to being a trustee for at least three years.
Trustees meet on a weekday evening five times per year. Meetings are usually held on Zoom except in December when we meet in person in London.
Preparation for the meetings involves a time commitment of two to four hours for detailed reading of papers, which are provided several days in advance.
The Treasurer also chairs the Finance Subcommittee, which meets on a weekday evening at the end of each quarter. The present Treasurer prepares the primary financial statements and notes, from the underlying accounting records at the year-end, for inclusion in the Annual Report and Accounts; the successful candidate will need to decide whether to continue with this approach or if there is a suitable alternative.
Key responsibilities
Financial oversight:
- Support the Trustee Board to maintain a clear and timely picture of the financial health of the organisation
- Ensure the Trustee Board and management team fulfil all required fiduciary and regulatory responsibilities
- Keep up to date on developments in charity finance regulations and best practice
- Chair the Finance Subcommittee to oversee Rainbow Migration’s financial management, ensuring robust processes and controls are in place

Role Summary
Oversee the charity’s financial risk-management process and report financial health to the board of trustees at regular intervals.
Acts as a counter signatory on applications to funders and working with appointed accountants to ensure that annual accounts are submitted to all relevant regulators in a timely fashion.

Age UK Hertfordshire (AUKH) is a large charity that every year reaches thousands of older people and their carers, and has a high level of recognition across the County’s statutory authorities, voluntary sector and the public. Our services – some developed and delivered in productive partnerships – include “active ageing” day clubs, help in the home, dementia support, befriending and in-touch telephone support, nutrition and dietetics service, hospital and community “navigation”, information and advice.
To build and grow from our current strong position, we need to expand our Trustee Board - to complement the skills of our present Trustees and broaden our Board’s diversity.
We welcome applications from all age groups and backgrounds, and we are particularly looking for legal skills.
In addition, the following areas of expertise are also welcome:
- fundraising and income generation;
- financial management;
- communications and social media;
- building local stakeholder relationships;
Board and/or senior experience would be a valuable bonus.
Time commitment is one day per month during working hours.
This is a volunteer role, offering the opportunity to contribute actively to the lives of older people in our communities, and gain leadership and Board experience with a collaborative team of committed Trustees.

The Membership and Community Lay Trustee provides strategic oversight and expert guidance on membership growth, engagement and community development. Workingalongside fellow trustees, you will support the organisation to build a vibrant, inclusive and sustainable professional community, that reflects its values and supports its charitable purpose. Acting as a critical friend to management, you will help shape policy, identify opportunities and risks, and support strategies that strengthen member value, retention and participation.
We’re seeking a senior professional with experience in membership strategy, stakeholder engagement or community development, ideally with board-level experience or experience advising boards or working at a similar strategic level.
You will bring insight into how professional communities thrive, how member needs evolve, and how digital and
data-driven approaches can support engagement and growth. Experience developing and evaluating membership models, including subscription-based approaches, is highly desirable. Experience within a regulated, professional or charitable membership environment is also desirable.
A collaborative approach, high integrity, and alignment with the organisation’s vision and values are essential.

Overview of the role: Trustees are responsible for providing appropriate governance and leadership to the charity in the pursuit of its strategies, to fulfil its charitable purposes.
A trustee may also lead on a specific area of responsibility dependant on personal skills and experience.
Key tasks
Trustee Responsibilities:
- Attend and actively take part in each trustee meeting.
- Update the trustee board on the progress of any specific area of responsibility.
Other responsibilities, along with the board of trustees, include:
- Develop a long-term strategy for the foodbank with clear objectives which can be monitored and adapted.
- Ensure the organisation’s financial dealings are systematically accounted for and on time, independently examined and made publicly available when necessary.
- Ensure the charity is accountable, actively complying with statutory accounting and reporting requirements and the law.
- Ensure appropriate financial plans are in place for future budget allocations as well as looking after contractual agreements with external partners that award money for core costs and additional projects.
- Help promote the organisation to a wider audience of potential funders and beneficiaries.
- Ensure the foodbank has appropriate procedures to: comply with current legislation and good practice; including employment, health and safety, equal opportunities, safeguarding and GDPR compliance/data protection etc.
- Act with reasonable care and skill, giving your time, thought and energy to your role.
- Serve as an additional promoter of the foodbank in the community.
