Summary
Over the last few years Prostate Cancer Research has grown significantly increasing the number of academic research projects we fund whilst placing collaboration and patient voice at the heart of our research strategy. Deep engagement with our patient population in recent years has highlighted a desire for Prostate Cancer Research to fund work that can deliver new treatments with a greater sense of urgency. As a result, we make sure that any research we fund has a clear roadmap to the clinic. Furthermore, we are also looking to increase our funding of later stage research, including in a commercial setting.
Like all organisations Covid-19 has impacted fundraising. However, thanks to a strong financial base, a forward thinking board and flexible staff team we have been able to spend the last 12 months building internal structures, creating new relationships and focusing on potential areas of growth. A new Translational Research Director is now required to bring a scientific, innovative and commercial approach to transform the impact PCR can have in academic and translational research for prostate cancer.
The two areas which the Translational Research Director (TRD) will be required to lead on are;
• The scientific lead when developing commercial partnerships.
The successful candidate will be the scientific lead on creating new industry relationships and identifying opportunities to translate our academic research into commercial opportunities. This could include linking with biotechs, pharmaceuticals and governments for licensing, spinning out, or clinical trials. You will understand the cross over between industry priorities and PCR’s research, identify where PCR can add value and then work alongside the fundraising team to secure new funding.
• The creation of a translational research fund focused on prostate cancer.
The Translational Director will be responsible for identifying the best academic research with commercial potential as well as coordinating a team of advisors to identify companies with existing oncology assets that could be successful utilised for new treatments or diagnostics for prostate cancer.
Job Description
The successful candidate will be someone who has a strong understanding of oncology, along with an innovative and commercial approach to transforming the impact PCR can have in academic and translational research.
Relationship Building
• Position PCR as the key partner to work with in the prostate cancer transaltional field.
• Identify therapeutic pipeline opportunities that correlate with PCR’s project portfolio.
• Ensure the organisation identifies opportunities for research and educational partnerships to co-fund or create new projects with external partners. These could include biotechs, large pharma or investors.
• You will be the scientific lead to enable us to create new partnerships. You will work alongside the CEO, Head of Research and Communications, Head of Major Gifts and Head of Partnerships to realise collaborative funding deals, educational grants for specific projects and sponsorship agreements.
• Identify potential reputational risks and implement appropriate risk mitigation when developing joint projects.
Project Management of commercial partnership projects
• Ensure that any joint project with a commercial partner is kicked off and that the delivery team understand the nature of the relationship with the partner and key deliverables.
• Ensure that projects are sufficiently and appropriately resourced.
• Take an overview of the management of all live projects, ensuring that relevant meetings take place - initiation, mid-project update, data processing and final evaluation.
• Keep abreast of outstanding proposals to foresee and plan workload levels.
Creation of a Translational Research Fund
• Create a portfolio of investment opportunities in both diagnostics and therapeutics and carry out the required analysis and due diligence of any given opportunity.
• Help to select an external fund manager who we will work alongside to raise circa £40-£60m to invest in translational research and/or help to set up an internal fund to invest in early stage research.
• Work alongside the fundraising team to find a cornerstone investor for this fund.
• Work with an investment committee and potentially an external fund manager to find, select and support seed funded companies and more established firms as necessary.
• Be the bridge between PCR and an external fund manager/committee.
Act as a key member of leadership team of PCRC
• Work together with other senior staff to provide leadership for the organisation.
• Have an input on the overall direction of the organisation and contribute to the growth and success of the charity.

• Take a lead role in establishing development plans for the more junior members of the team.

• Understanding of the investment landscape and significant financial acumen.
• Entrepreneurial mind-set – ability to overcome challenges, high level of motivation and strong decision making.

Overview of ThinkForward
ThinkForward runs two breakthrough coaching programmes which intervene early to ensure young people at risk of becoming unemployed make a successful transition from education to work. Long-term coaching support over a number of years helps young people to take control of their own lives and believe in themselves.
The ThinkForward programme works with young people who face multiple challenges that might be holding them back from achieving their potential so that they can prepare for and gain work. The MoveForward programme works with young people with mild to moderate learning disabilities who have the potential to work but who may find it hard to prepare for and access opportunities.
At the heart of both programmes are coaches who provide young people with personalised one-to-one coaching and access to targeted activities which provide insights into the world of work and develop the skills needed for it.
The ThinkForward programme has a strong track record of delivering sustained impact, 83% our most recent graduates were in education or employment when they left the programme.
Having started as just a small pilot in London in 2011, the organisation and programmes have since expanded to Nottingham, Kent and the West Midlands. Our new five-year strategy aims to grow our work sustainably. To do this we are focused on evaluating what works and seeking strategic partners who can help us achieve our expansion aims.
ThinkForward’s fundraising track record
The original ThinkForward programme was funded by a social impact bond (SIB) which provided 50% of the funds needed for the programme to operate. The rest of our funding came from a few strategic and significant corporate and grant making trust grants. When the SIB ended in 2015, we developed a more diverse mix of philanthropic partners through funders including The Big Lottery Communities Fund, the GLA Young Londoners Fund, BBC Children in Need, Credit Suisse, Epic Foundation and Paul Hamlyn and at present our philanthropic income is close to £2m. In 2019 we created another SIB as part of the Government’s Life Chance’s Fund to grow our MoveForward programme and are now looking for further ways to grow our statutory income as part of our new five-year strategy.
We have many repeat funders and a strong community of loyal supporters who we keep in touch with our work through regular engagement opportunities.
Whilst our funding heritage is strong, we are an incredibly ambitious team and know there is more for us to do to build strategic partnerships which not only provide valuable funds but also open doors and create fairer employment opportunities for the young people on our programmes.
The development team benefits from the networks and advice of an active development committee, a sub-committee of ThinkForward’s board of trustees, as well as a network of business partners and contacts across the regions where we work.

Are you a keen and skilled science communicator? Then you’re just who we are looking for. Come and help us show the world the impact Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity (GOSH Charity) is having on the lives of seriously ill children across the UK and around the globe.
We are looking for a full-time Grants Communications Manager to join our dynamic team on a 12-month fixed term contract (Maternity cover). By helping to shape and drive communications that highlight the importance, impact and long-term vision of a large and varied programme of scientific and clinical charitable activity, your main role will be to work in partnership with internal fundraisers to help inspire and steward their audiences.
This role will have you working across the charity, the hospital and its research partner, the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (ICH) to gather and share information, and will make you an instrumental player in:
• translating varied and vibrant programme of scientific and medical research.
• showcasing the hospital’s quest to create state-of-the art hospital environments that benefit children’s recoveries, combined with the latest technology to enhance diagnosis and treatment;
• demonstrating the fundamental importance of our services to aid the wellbeing of patients and their families; and why investing in GOSH staff is so important.
About the Team:
The Grants Team has three main responsibilities: allocating funding in a rigorous manner; evaluating the impact of charitable funding; and communicating the difference it makes to the lives of children.
You will be working as part of a sub-team responsible for the communications aspect. Our mission is to help the organisation raise more money and fund more life-changing grants by co-creating content that inspires and engages our audiences.
About You:
You will be a creative, keen and autonomous worker with excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills. Being able to establish credible and effective working relationships is critical in this cross-organisational role. The ability to quickly understand complex scientific and clinical concepts and translate them into concise, interesting and inspiring documents and presentations is also essential.
Specifically, you will need to have:
• A basic life sciences degree.
• Experience of networking and liaising with scientific, clinical and research communities.
About the Charity:
Every day brings new challenges at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). Every day, over 600 seriously ill children from across the UK arrive for life-changing treatments. Every day, young lives hang in the balance as patients, families and staff battle the most complex illnesses. And every day, the brightest minds come together to achieve pioneering medical breakthroughs that change the lives of thousands of children – and change the world. This extraordinary hospital has always depended on charitable support to give seriously ill children the best chance to fulfil their potential. Without donations, Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity can’t help fund ground-breaking research, advanced equipment, child and family support services, and the rebuilding and refurbishment of wards and medical facilities. Our staff help to raise these vital funds for the hospital. A better future for seriously ill
children starts with you.

The role will focus on supporting the charity to 1) measure; and 2) communicate our impact effectively from prior and future investment, so that we can engage, inform and inspire our stakeholders by telling them our impact story and how we are fulfilling our purpose and achieving the social impact and change that we and they seek.
The charity is about to launch a new and ambitious organisational strategy, with impact centre stage as one of the three central pillars, alongside income and partnerships.
