Scope of role

We recognise the scope of this role is wide and we are open to working with the successful candidate to flex the span of their initial responsibilities dependent on their individual strengths. While we are ideally seeking an experienced Senior Leader who can deputise for our CEO and oversee daily operations as Chief Operating Officer, we have deliberately set the Job Specification requirements broad. We are open to considering outstanding candidates with ‘potential’ and investing in their growth and development, so long as they demonstrate motivation and willingness to learn as a charity leader.

The BMA is the trade union and professional body for doctors in the UK.  They represent, support and negotiate on behalf of all UK doctors and medical students.

Reporting into the Group Financial Controller, the Group VAT Accountant will be responsible for ensuring that the BMA Group (BMA and BMJPG) properly accounts for VAT and meets their statutory return, including overseas equivalents. You will proactively ensure that the finance systems and internal processes across the group are compliant and will manage relationships with external advisors and HMRC, as the organisation’s VAT Subject Matter Expert.

The key duties of the role are as follows:

A natural people-person, you’ll be a confident communicator with a strong instinct for matching individuals to careers, vocational pathways, and volunteer opportunities. Experience in the non-profit sector and an understanding of volunteering are desirable.

You will need:

• A background in volunteer co-ordination and administration within a charity, HR, or equivalent setting

• A solid grasp of employment law, equality, diversity and inclusion, and best practice in HR

• Excellent organisational and time management skills

• Strong interpersonal and communication abilities

• Confidence using a range of IT platforms including SharePoint, online meeting tools, cloud-based database systems, advertising portals, and desktop publishing software

Summary

The Lead Strategy and Impact Analyst plays a key role in developing practical, evidence-based policies that support effective mission and ministry approaches within the Church of England's Vision and Strategy priority areas.

In this role, you will analyse and synthesise data from evaluations of funded programmes, commissioned research, and wider social trends, building a coherent evidence base to inform both policy and practice.

As a member of the Insights and Engagement sub-team, you will work collaboratively across departments and teams to:

• Support strategic projects through analysis, reporting, and evaluation
• Engage with key stakeholders, fostering communication and knowledge sharing
• Assess the impact of grant-funded projects to ensure meaningful outcomes.

• Convert analysis into actionable insight to inform decision-making.
• Conduct high-quality research to build evidence and support policy development.
• Lead strategy development initiatives, including stakeholder engagement, communication, analysis, reporting, and evaluation.
• Perform statistical modelling and quantitative/qualitative analysis to assess the impact of the SMMI grants programme.

The post holder is required to work 1 day a week from the primary office location - Church House or The Brewhouse, Bishopthorpe Palace.

You will need to be/have:

• Experience in handling complex datasets, projects and applying different strategic modelling approaches.
• Proficient in data visualisation tools such as Power BI and Tableau.
• A strong background in statistical modelling, including regression analysis (R, Python, SPSS).
• The ability to prioritise and structure the evidence base with technical expertise.

• A salary of £59,248 per annum, plus age-related pension contributions between 8-15% of salary. We will also match any pension contributions you make up to an additional 3% of your salary.

As a Senior Event Planner, you will be a key member of their experienced and dynamic team.  You will play a crucial role in converting high-revenue business opportunities and planning and coordinating both physical and hybrid events. Your efforts will help maximise income and fill unsold spaces which support our revenue targets. You will also drive high performance and engagement within the team by deputising for the diary/revenue and team managers as needed, and by supervising the commercial planning team to ensure best practices and change initiatives are implemented.

In addition to managing your own events, you will support the sales team by planning and coordinating events converted from new prospective clients with high revenue potential. Your role will involve maintaining and developing high-value key accounts, networking with existing clients, and engaging with past users to generate future business and develop new leads. A strong commercial awareness of profitable business and current industry trends is essential.

Responsibilities include:

• Liaising with customers from the initial enquiry stage, right through the customer journey to post event follow up including for physical, hybrid and virtual events.
• Arranging and conducting client venue visits, handling enquiries and following up with detailed proposals.
• Demonstrating an in-depth knowledge of the product, pricing and packages on offer,
• Demonstrating commercial awareness in order to successfully negotiate with customers to win their business.
• Participating in site visits, handling enquiries and taking ownership of large revenue events, as directed by the Business Development Manager.
• Ensuring the successful delivery of events, by communicating, coordinating and compiling event details and liaising with the event operations and front of house teams.
• Preparation and processing of accurate deposits and invoices.
• Generating and reporting on activities as required.
• Yield management, ensuring up to date activities and maintenance of accounts in the CRM system.
• Creating and managing Key Account plans.
• Delivering a consistently high level of customer service.

Experience

• Educated to A-level, or equivalent business or event management qualification.
• Demonstrate relevant experience in Event Planning and Coordination with the skills, knowledge and commercial understanding required for the role.
• Working in a direct planning role within the hospitality/events industry specialising in conferences, meetings, dining and events, with a minimum of 2 years of experience.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft office applications.
• Being commercially aware of finance, budget management and working in a profitable business.
• Having knowledge of food and beverage in the context of the hospitality and events industry.
• Ability to prioritise your own workload and completing tasks with a high level of accuracy.
