Swarthmoor Hall in Ulverston is a place of international significance as the birth of the Quaker movement. It comprises a small historic visitor attraction with gardens, a café, on site holiday accommodation plus facilities for the local community. Swarthmoor Hall has lots to offer local visitors and tourists, it is a great place to work with an excellent team. We have plans to develop the attraction further, this along with increasing visitor numbers means we need two new staff.
We’re looking for motivated and flexible staff to support us opening the Hall and gardens to more visitors, as well as promoting and supervising our self-catering holiday accommodation and café to be open year-round.
In this role, you will bring experience of managing people, and you will have skills and abilities from working in a range of relevant work settings e.g. café/holiday accommodation/visitor attraction. You will bring lots of energy and ideas on how we can continue to increase the numbers of visitors and improve their experience.
The site is open all year round in 2025, Wednesday to Friday as well as some weekends and bank holidays, and we’re looking to extend this in 2026 and beyond as we grow and develop.

Our team of passionate Chefs prepare delicious meals using excellent quality of nutritious fresh food for our colleagues, our Residents and their families. Our 60 seats cover Café is located within the John Morden Centre, which is a vibrant space where people meet, eat, take part to fun events, develop and enjoy a variety of interesting hobbies. Our Chefs also provide our Care Home Residents with a personalised service that caters for a variety of dietary needs ensuring that our Residents have access to a healthy and balanced diet all year round.
JOB PURPOSE
Prepare, cook and present food safely and efficiently using high quality ingredients according to the College standards, health and safety and food hygiene practices. Work collaboratively with other Chefs and contribute with new ideas to support the Catering Manager in the creation of new dishes and update of seasonal menus. Contribute to create a safe and fun work environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILTIES AND DUTIES
- Always ensure the cleanliness and tidiness of the kitchen and back of house areas
- Ensure that the equipment is clean and safe to use
- Regularly check inventory levels
- Check the quality and freshness of ingredients before use
- Cook healthy and nutritious dishes in accordance with our menus
- Adapt recipes to cater for special dietary requirements where needed
- Complete all appropriate company documentation, due diligence records and key tasks during your shift
- Comply with statutory and organisational requirements including but not limited to Health and Safety, Food Safety and Fire Safety
- Keep wastage to a minimum and ensure that wastage recording procedures are followed
- Deal with deliveries and report any loss or damages to the Manager or Supervisor on duty
- Work safely with kitchen equipment and report any maintenance issues to the Manager or Supervisor on duty
- Keep knowledge up to date by completing mandatory and CPD training online and/or face-to-face
- Adhere to the College standards, policies and procedures
- Carry out management team requests and instructions
SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Proven experience in a similar role or food production operation
- Level 3 Food Safety certificate
- First Aid certificate (desirable)
- Environmental awareness (desirable)
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to motivate and inspire others
- Ability to work well under pressure and remain level-headed during busy times
- Located within commutable distance to Morden College

We are looking for a strategic, self-motivated and entrepreneurial Deputy Director to support the long-term success and sustainability of Nottingham Contemporary. The Deputy Director works closely with the Director, Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Board to deliver the strategic direction, business planning and lead the operational management of the organisation.
The Deputy Director is responsible for the effective internal operation of the organisation, embracing its administrative, facilities, financial, personnel, IT and legal functions as well as its income generation growth strategy. The post holder has executive responsibility for the development and delivery of all aspects of the Business Plan and Arts Council England’s National Portfolio funding agreement, monitoring all Key Performance Indicators. The Deputy Director works with the Director and SLT to shape a sustainable future for the Gallery, maximise income generation and reduce environmental impact.
The role
Your main accountabilities will include:
- Develop operational policies, procedures and documentation, including risk management, ensuring they are up to date and reflect the organisation’s values and align with the Arts Council’s Investment Principles.
- Lead the organisation’s business plan alongside the Director and with support from the SLT, ensuring this is in line with the organisation’s vision, offer, purpose and values.
- Manage the preparation and submission of annual applications to key public sector funders, including Arts Council England, Nottingham City Council and HE partners by providing relevant departmental data and information.
- Lead responsibility for all aspects of financial management and administration of the organisation, including related regulatory reporting.
- In liaison with the Director and SLT, set and manage annual and multi-year budgets and resources, providing suitable reporting on a regular basis to the Director, budget holders and Trustees.
- Ensure that legal responsibilities of Nottingham Contemporary are met including charity, company and health and safety, liaising with solicitors as required.
- Ensure the efficient maintenance and excellent presentation of the building.
- Spearhead income generation strategies in the business plan with support from the Director and Senior Development Manager to diversify and increase the gallery’s revenue streams.
- Oversee the promotion and communication of Nottingham Contemporary’s artistic and educational programmes and commercial activities across all platforms, including print, press, digital and social media.
- Develop and manage key local and regional partnerships, and working relationships with regional and national tourism organisations.
- Be an outstanding member of the SLT, upholding our values and contributing to Nottingham Contemporary being a high-performing organisation and an excellent and inclusive employer.

The person
This role would suit someone experienced in business planning and strategy at a senior level, with strong financial understanding and experience. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker, with excellent organisational skills and commercial acumen. Self-motivated and proactive, you’ll be able to work calmly under pressure to inspire and support colleagues at all levels of the organisation.
You’ll have a strong record of using your entrepreneurial business skills in the non-profit sector, and will be able to develop and manage partnerships and build the organisation’s profile. You’ll understand our organisational mission and vision, and be aligned with our values: brave, open, hopeful and resourceful.
