The Policy and Campaigns Officer will develop policy positions and campaigns that will help ensure that the needs, rights and priorities of those living with DMD are understood and acted on by decision makers, policy makers, parliament and government. The Officer will work closely with colleagues in the Policy and Communications team to support a cohesive and impactful approach to policy, engagement and communications.
Job Description
- To ensure that the charity’s policy and campaigning work is firmly grounded in the views and experiences of the DMD community and to ensure that they are consulted and involved in the development (and delivery where appropriate) of Duchenne UK’s policy positions and campaigns.
- To maximise the benefits of our existing relationships with civil servants, parliamentarians, policy makers, relevant organisations (such as NICE) and charity sector professionals and to create new relationships which help us to achieve our aims.
- To organise events and parliamentary activity working with parliamentary supporters and the DMD community.
- To devise low-budget campaigns aimed at creating positive change in policy, practice or attitudes that will improve the lives and outcomes of those living with DMD.
- To create campaign assets such as digital and social media content in collaboration with the communications team.
- To draft consultation responses, policy positions and occasional short reports summarising the findings of research we have conducted or commissioned.
- To monitor relevant government proposals and initiatives, identifying those likely to have a major impact on the lives of those living with DMD, and to seek to influence their development.
- To stay abreast of relevant academic research, build relationships with key academics and identify opportunities for collaboration.
Person Specification
Essential experience:
- Experience of working in a policy and/or campaigning role.
- Experience of writing for a range of audiences and using different channels to produce convincing, clear and succinct content across a range of platforms such as blogs, web and print.
- Experience of working with civil servants and parliamentarians.
- Experience of using digital and social media for influencing and campaigning purposes.
Desirable experience:
- Project management experience including initiating, planning, implementing and evaluating campaigns and organising events.
- Experience working in health and social care space, with pharmaceutical industry and/or a highly regulated industry and engaging with regulators.
Essential knowledge:
- Working knowledge of the healthcare system, regulatory framework and the social model of disability.
- Knowledge of how policy and legislation are developed in Westminster and Whitehall.
- Knowledge of campaigning techniques.
Essential skills and attributes:
- Highly motivated with a passion for improving the life outcomes of people living with DMD.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with people of all ages and backgrounds.

Reporting to the Director of Campaigns, Policy and Programmes, this is a new role working within the department to provide strategic oversight and coordination across War on Want’s campaigning portfolio, to evolve the organisation’s creative tools and techniques for both online and offline campaigning, and lead on impact learning to inform the development of campaign plans.
The role is both strategic and operational, supporting the development and integration of national and international campaigns that will engage and mobilise new and existing supporters, with a particular focus on War on Want’s priority campaign programme areas on Justice for Palestine and on a Global Green New Deal.
We are looking for an experienced campaign strategist who knows how to drive campaigns forward, familiar with the different tools and techniques to inspire online and offline campaigning, and who can spark creative ways to deliver impact and secure campaign successes working effectively and collaboratively across teams. You will be responsible for managing our three Senior Campaigners who lead on War on Want’s thematic campaigns, supporting strategy development and implementation, taking an intersectional approach to connect across the issues we campaign on, and coordinating across teams to ensure campaigns deliver for the shared organisational objectives of generating impact, engagement and income.

The Children's Society is at an exciting stage of its journey as we look to ramp up our political campaigning and advocacy to achieve our goal to reverse the damaging decline in children's wellbeing.
The Senior Campaigns & Advocacy Officer will form a key part of the Policy, Advocacy and Influencing team, bringing together policy, public affairs and campaigns expertise to drive systemic change for young people. You will be responsible for delivering ambitious campaigns to achieve our aims, utilising offline and online tactics to empower supporters to join us in influencing policy and creating change.
The role will work with the wider team across our priority areas of work; spanning young people's wellbeing and mental health, adolescent risk and vulnerability, and child poverty. You will be involved in delivering long-term strategic campaigns as well as responding to immediate opportunities to mobilise and advocate for change for young people.
You will work with colleagues across the organisation, including our youth voice work to ensure that the voices and experiences of young people are central to our political campaigns activity.

The role will be line managed by the Campaigns & Advocacy Manager.
Key responsibilities will be to:
-Deliver the campaigns and public advocacy work in line with defined policy and influencing priorities of the organisation, contributing to delivering and growing impact with and for young people.
-Producing high-quality campaign materials to inspire political action and support across a range of audiences.
-Work with young people, parents/carers and practitioners on opportunities to be involved in campaigns and advocacy work, including having their voices heard by decision makers to inform policy change.
-Capture and monitor the impact of campaigns and advocacy work, utilising data to form a powerful, compelling narrative to demonstrate the value of campaigning to influence change.
-Contribute to the external representation of our political campaigning and advocacy work.

We are seeking a Planning Policy and Campaigns Officer to join our cause.
This is a critical time for nature’s recovery. To meet the UK legal target of securing 30% of land for nature’s recovery and halting wildlife decline by 2030, we need positive and strong laws and policies and for decision makers at both local and national level to ensure that planning and development gives back more to nature than it takes.
Currently there is huge uncertainty with a new Planning and Infrastructure Bill passing through parliament, which could fundamentally change the protections afforded to our most important wildlife sites and the delivery of mitigation. There are also changes proposed for Biodiversity Net Gain policy and the National Planning Policy Framework.
Locally, our counties face huge development pressures – both through house building and infrastructure development, including major port expansion. We must challenge inappropriate development proposals which would negatively impact our nature reserves and other key strategic areas or ambitions. It is also essential that local plans align with the Local Nature Recovery Strategies for the two counties and enable properly sustainable nature-positive development.
With the forthcoming creation of a strategic mayoral authority for the region alongside local government reorganisation, there is a critical opportunity to ensure that spatial development strategies front-load environmental considerations and recognise the wider benefits of planning with nature in mind.
Planning and development is an issue of huge interest to members and supporters who care about their communities and about wildlife. We have witnessed recently the power of people using their voice in our campaign with RSPB against the damaging development proposed at Tipner-West. We want to support and empower individuals and communities to respond, challenge and advocate on nature’s behalf.
This role is critical to achieving our strategic aims. As part of a small policy and advocacy team, you would lead on planning-related policy issues and work with supporters to achieve greater impact through campaigning.
This role sits within the Advocacy & Engagement team and will work with colleagues from across the Trust and beyond, to develop and deliver compelling, evidence-led policy positions. Your role will involve engaging with our MPs and councillors and supporting the development of the Trust’s campaigns to drive individuals and policy makers to act for nature.
