About Reprieve
Reprieve is a UK charity founded in 1999. Reprieve uses strategic interventions to end the use of the death penalty globally, and to end extreme human rights abuses carried out in the name of “counterterrorism” or “national security”.
Reprieve works with the most disenfranchised people in society, as it is in their cases that human rights are most swiftly jettisoned and the rule of law is cast aside. Thus, Reprieve promotes and protects the rights of those facing the death penalty and those who are the victims of extreme human rights abuses carried out in the name of “counterterrorism” or “national security”, with a focus on arbitrary detention, torture, and extrajudicial executions.
About the Role:
The Syria and Iraq Detention Project Caseworker is responsible for undertaking a range of casework activities in support of Reprieve’s work on detention cases in North East Syria (NES) and Iraq.
There are currently thousands of people indefinitely detained in camps in North East Syria (NES), in conditions the UN has described as “deplorable and inhumane”. Others have been transferred to Iraq or Assad-controlled Syria, where they have faced torture and the death penalty without anything resembling due process.
Reprieve’s Syria and Iraq Project aim to ensure that individuals detained in Syria and Iraq are treated in line with international law, and not subjected to the death penalty, extrajudicial execution, arbitrary detention, torture or rendition. We also aim to challenge and change flawed ‘war on terror’ narratives and legal and political frameworks – including in the UK, Europe and the US – that engender state-sanctioned discrimination and abuse and undermine the rule of law and human rights.
About you
You will be responsible for undertaking the casework underpinning Reprieve’s dynamic strategic approach in which each of Reprieve’s methodologies—casework, investigation, litigation, political and public engagement, outreach and support for affected communities—connect with one another in pursuit of saving clients’ lives and addressing structural rights violations. You are an experienced caseworker with the skills necessary to address a complex portfolio of cases.
You are a person with a high level of cultural competency, with direct lived or working experience with communities impacted by the so-called ‘war on terror’ and/or the Syrian conflict. You are able to recognise nuance and show good judgement in working with clients and stakeholders. You are familiar with the political and legal context of detention issues in NES and Iraq, as well as with gender and trafficking issues.
You are a positive person with a can-do attitude, 1-2 years of case management experience and advocacy experience, a great ability to multitask and excellent organisational skills, a sensitivity to the risks faced by those whom we work with and assist, and a willingness to muck in on all tasks big and small, humility and a passion for Reprieve’s work.
You possess excellent research skills, and the ability to succinctly and clearly convey findings to inform the wider team’s ability to advance strategic goals. You can draft advocacy and briefing materials for a wide range of audiences, tailoring your writing style accordingly.
You will be an integral member of the Secret Prisons Team and larger Casework Team and will report to the Head of Syria and Iraq Detention Project.
Length and Salary
The role is a full-time, fixed term 12-month role with the possibility of extension (funding dependent) based in Reprieve’s London office during core office hours. The annual salary is £37,128 per annum less any required deductions for income tax and national insurance. Reprieve is proud that the highest-paid member of staff is paid no more than double the lowest-paid member of staff. Our pay is transparent and non-negotiable. We are a flexible employer and offer a range of nonfinancial benefits to employees. We welcome applications from a range of backgrounds. You can learn more about Reprieve’s salary structure and ethos on our website.

About RLS
Refugee Legal Support (RLS) works in solidarity with people who migrate. We advance safe migration through legal support, casework, strategic litigation, outreach, training and partnerships. We advocate for the promotion and protection of people’s rights throughout the migration process.
Founded in 2017, we run a free legal clinic for refugees in Athens who seek asylum or family reunification in other European countries. Brexit has brought new, significant restrictions to legal routes for refugee family reunion and heightened hostility towards people on the move. To tackle these enormous challenges we have mobilised and launched an islands project based on Lesvos and casework capacity in the UK, to coordinate applications for family reunion from Greece to the UK.
Our values

We recognise that immigration systems are weighted against those forced to migrate and we challenge hostile policy in an effort to level the playing field
-
We stand opposed to all forms of violence against people compelled to migrate, including those who are undocumented.

We support the global movement that fights entrenched inequalities, racism and other forms of discrimination that force people to migrate.
-
We strive to develop inclusive, sustainable and regenerative ways of working and facilitate the inclusion of those with lived migration experience.
The role
This is a new position with funding in place for two years. You will work alongside RLS teams, Advisory Panels and Trustees, and have oversight of projects, HR, fundraising, financial compliance and operational governance.

-
Coordinate and oversee RLS’ operations, including the legal clinic in Athens and casework services on Lesvos and in the UK.
-
Contribute to establishing, initiating and maintaining new relationships.
-
Collaborate with RLS teams, Advisory Panels and Trustees to develop the governance of the organisation, advance RLS’ mission and respond to changes in the external environment to ensure that RLS continues to meet the needs of people on the move.
-
Taking an innovative and imaginative approach, develop and implement an effective fundraising strategy and generate income.
-
Ensure compliance with charity law and guidelines, and other relevant regulatory requirements.
-
Contribute to and direct campaign strategies in line with RLS’ strategic goals.
-
Oversee HR functions and provide effective and inclusive leadership to ensure staff well-being and flourishing.
