Legal Counsel

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Legal Counsel to join the Chief Executive's Office. Your role is to provide general legal advice; to act as commercial counsel, assisting in reviewing and drafting commercial contracts, ensuring these are fit for purpose and to manage any potential commercial disputes.

Role Requirements

• Providing accurate, relevant and timely advice to the organisation on a wide range of legal topics that relate to the organisation.
• Managing and mitigating legal risks by designing and implementing organisational policies and procedures as well as providing in-house legal templates.
• Ensuring compliance with all laws, rules, regulations and statutory guidance that apply to the business including any changes that may arise from time to time
• Drafting, reviewing, and supporting with the negotiation of various commercial contracts and agreements including retail shop leases.
• Providing timely, accurate and commercially responsive advice to CEO, SLT, senior managers and trustees on both a formal and informal basis.
• Communicating with and managing third-party bodies such as regulators, external counsel or auditors.
• Promoting legal, compliance and risk management best practice throughout the organisation.
• Designing and delivering legal training to the organisation.
• Providing advice on the effective management and protection of The Children’s Trust intellectual property.
• Providing advice on the effective management and protection of The Children’s Trusts employees.
• Providing support with coroner’s inquests including instructing external counsel, liaising with the Coroner’s Office and conveying legally privileged advice to the SLT and trustees as appropriate.
• Supporting colleagues with the development and implementation of a contracts management process, contracts playbook (set of standard templates) and central contracts database.
• Managing the legal services budget.
• Undertaking other or additional duties that are within your skills and abilities, as the organisation may reasonably require from time to time.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with strong attention to detail and experience of post-award administration and budget reporting to support our organisational Finance administration, including grant-related budget reporting.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

WHL Finance Administrative Tasks

• Tracking and reconciliation of WHL credit card transactions;

• Recording and reconciliation of donation income

• Recording invoices and expense claims using our account package (SAGE)

• Drafting communications including reports and letters

• Supporting fundraising applications, reporting and communications, including quarterly reporting for special projects.

• Any ad hoc tasks as required.

EHRI-UK and Other Post-Award Tasks:

• Monitor and track WHL EHRI-UK and EHRI budgets, including for EHRI-UK Fellowships

• Monitor and track other expenditure, budgets, invoices and other financial aspects of grants.

Person Specification

Essential Skills:

• Ability to analyse, interpret and report on complex data and information

• Track record of supporting successful funding bids, especially AHRC, EU or other large-scale bodies

• Experience of research development in a higher education setting and/or the heritage sector, including full economic costing

• Excellent verbal and written communications skills, attention to detail, well organised

• Technical capacities (MS Office suite to analyse and produce data, familiarity with some database software)

• Competency using spreadsheet software such as Excel, e.g. pivot tables, calculation using formulae, sum checks

The Finance and Grant Controller role is part of the central finance team and sits within the Management Accounting function which provides our country programmes and the region offices with professional and technical finance leadership for WaterAid UK’s international work. The role will work closely with the Project Delivery Lead and the Monitoring and Learning Coordinator for the Multi-country Urban Water Project.

About the role:

The Finance and Grant Controller will manage all financial aspects of WaterAid’s Multi-country Urban Water Project, ensuring rigorous financial oversight, compliance with donor requirements, and alignment with organisational financial policies. This is a bold initiative aiming to raise $40 million and reach two million people with clean water in urban areas across six anchor countries: Colombia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Mozambique, Bangladesh, and Cambodia.

In this role, you will:

1. Financial Monitoring and Reporting

• Prepare and review all financial reports in line with specific contract requirements and deadlines
• Monitor project budgets, tracking actual expenditures against budget allocations and flagging variances to the project team
• Monitor movement in exchange rates and local currency budget variations

2. Budget and Forecasting Development & Grant Support

• Assist program staff in preparing detailed budgets in each country project
• Deliver regular reforecasts, ensuring realistic timing of spend
• Conduct cost allocations and ensure appropriate coding of expenses

3. Compliance and Controls

• Review contracts and grant agreements to identify financial requirements, restrictions, and deliverables

• Ensure financial activities comply with contractual terms, organisational policies, and legal and regulatory requirements, including guiding eligible costs, procurement, and financial compliance to programme teams
• Support related audits, ensuring all necessary documentation is available and compliant

4. Finance Business Partner

• Collaborate closely with programme lead, providing consolidated financial reporting, financial insights and supporting decision-making.
• Coordinate timely reporting to cross-federation leadership teams from multiple country programmes
• Advise on reallocation of budget if required to meet programme delivery targets

Requirements

To be successful, you will need:

Technical Qualifications and Skills

• Professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA)
• Experience in the use of SUN, or a similar multi-dimensional accounting system.
• Experience in managing programme or project finance funded by institutional donors ( e.g. USAID, FCDO or other reputable organisation)
• Excellent Microsoft Excel skill
• Working knowledge of Business Intelligence tools such as Power BI
• Knowledge and experience of donor fund management in an international context
• Experience of financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting of projects
• Ability to analyse financial data and provide insightful narrative for range of audiences
• Finance Business Partnering experience with senior stakeholders 

Desirable skills

• Proven ability to work effectively with staff at different levels and from different cultural backgrounds including experience of coaching or training
• Knowledge of development issues and the sector, preferably gained in an International Development Organisation
• Knowledge of French or Portuguese will be an advantage

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People has been creating life-changing partnerships between hearing dogs and deaf recipients since 1982. As well as acting as an ear to their partners and alerting them to sounds, the charity’s clever and expertly trained dogs help deaf people to live life with confidence and independence, whilst providing love, companionship and emotional support.

Following on from a strategic review, the charity is now looking to build a new Income Generation Directorate, to enable them to transform many more lives across the UK. The Head of Philanthropy will play a central role in this growth, helping Hearing Dogs deliver their goals to diversify income, expand their philanthropy programme and increase engagement and impact.

The role will be responsible for developing and implementing a multi-year major donor strategy to grow income and build a robust pipeline of supporters. You will personally manage a portfolio or high-value prospects and donors, and will lead on bespoke cultivation and stewardship plans, ensuring that all the charity’s donor engagement is tailored, strategic and high-impact. The role also offers a rare chance to build your own high-performing team, recruiting, managing and supporting the development of Principal Gifts and Major Giving members of staff. 

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in personally securing six figure + gifts from individual donors, as well as a background in major donor fundraising, philanthropy or private wealth engagement.  You will have experience of working with senor stakeholders and possess strong relationship management and interpersonal skills. Previous experience of successfully establishing a philanthropy and special events function from scratch in a charity setting would be advantageous.

We are looking for someone with:

• Experience of administering complex processes or programmes within the charity or housing sectors.
• Strong understanding of CRM systems (Salesforce desirable) and data management.
• An eye for detail, excellent time management, and experience juggling multiple priorities.
• Experience working with stakeholders, assessing applications, and reporting against outcomes.
• A collaborative and curious mindset, and a genuine commitment to ending youth homelessness.

About the Organisation
The charity has been around since 1986, created by and working with the UK property industry to try and harness a collective desire to do good. Since 2016, the focus has been exclusively on creating a corporate movement within and across the industry to tackle and end youth homelessness.
