Responsible to:

The Board of Trustees – As a Trustee your lead responsibility will be acting on behalf of the Board in chairing the People and Remuneration Committee. You are accountable to the Board of Trustees and act on its behalf to ensure that the best interests of the charity and its stakeholders are served within relevant regulatory frameworks and standards of probity in the areas of delegated responsibility

Role Profile:

As Board Trustee and Chair of the People and Remuneration Committee, you are responsible for ensuring the delivery of our charitable objects. The Board sets out our strategic direction, upholds our beliefs and values and provides governance to the organisation by prescribing and monitoring management performance. Your lead responsibility will be in ensuring that our people strategy aligns with our mission, values, and long-term sustainability. This includes chairing the People and Remuneration Committee overseeing key areas such as executive remuneration, workforce planning, performance management, succession planning, and organisational culture.

Your leadership will guide the Board and Committee in maintaining transparency, fairness, and accountability in all people-related decisions and you will work closely with the Director of People and Programmes. In addition, you will facilitate constructive dialogue among committee members, foster a culture of informed decision-making, and ensure that governance standards are upheld. Specific Duties:

• To respect and promote the founding Christian principles in line with our charity’s objects.
• To be responsible for the effective and efficient conduct of committee meetings ensuring resolutions are properly put and necessary decisions made.
• To ensure the committee’s decisions are acted upon.
• To ensure that committee meetings take place at appropriate intervals as part of our annual calendar of meetings and start and finish times are agreed with other members.
• To ensure all committee members can play a full part in meetings, their contributions are timely and relevant, and appropriate standards of conduct and behaviour are maintained in accordance with the code of conduct approved by the Board.
• To work proactively with the Executive Team lead on the arrangements for meetings, including agreeing the agenda and checking minutes.
• To ensure that any decisions taken by the Committee that need Board approval are reported to the next Board meeting and lead the discussion at the Board meetings summarising the deliberations of the committee, including making clear recommendations.
• To proactively establish a constructive working relationship with and provide support to the Chair of the Board, the CEO and the Executive Team.
• To have a general understanding of legislative changes and policy developments in people-related matters.
• To ensure that the committee receives professional advice when needed, either from the Executive Team or external sources.
• To induct, support and contribute to the annual appraisal of those Board members who are members of the committee.

Additional Trustee Duties:

• Familiarising themselves with all Board papers prior to each meeting.
• Attending Board meetings (and committee meetings, as appropriate) and actively participating in the work of the Board.
• Defining and ensuring compliance with the vision, values and objectives of the charity.
• Ensuring compliance with the National Housing Federation’s Code of Governance, Regulatory Standards, Ofsted and other areas of regulation within our operating environment.
• Establishing strategy, policies and plans to achieve those objectives across the range of functions undertaken by the charity.
• Approving each year’s Budget and final accounts prior to publication.
• Establishing and overseeing a framework of delegation and systems of control.

Person Specification:

Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan. To do this we need local branches and volunteers who can coordinate people, ensure the local population know about SSAFA and keep things running smoothly behind the scenes.

What would you be doing?

• Providing leadership to the Branch and ensuring that all activities comply with SSAFA regulations both directly, and through the Branch Secretary, other Branch Officers, and Divisional Officers.
• Providing support and guidance to volunteers in office holder roles, and support with recruitment of volunteers into these positions to ensure the sustainability of the branch.
• Ensuring the financial integrity of the Branch, including the appointment of Treasurers and a local fundraising programme to meet branch running costs.
• Ensuring that all data is processed and held in accordance with SSAFA’s data management policies.
• Monitoring volunteer numbers against the demand for support and working with other volunteers, regional and central office staff to attract and recruit new volunteers as required.
• Ensuring that all volunteers are recruited, inducted, supported, and managed in line with SSAFA policies, such as the Volunteering Policy, Volunteer Code of Conduct, Data Protection Policy, and Safeguarding Policy.
• Building relationships with regional and central office staff, local voluntary organisations and, if applicable, SSAFA Service committees, local military establishments, prisons etc.
• Overseeing an appropriate programme of awareness raising so that potential clients, volunteers, and supporters know how to contact the branch.

The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

Founded in 1997, the Islington Centre for Refugees and Migrants provides a place for refugees, migrants, and people seeking asylum to rebuild their life with support and community. From classes to casework to financial assistance, the Centre has a wide offering available for our community of over 200 people. The current Board brings a wide range of charity and public body experience including strategy and fundraising and we are looking for skills to both enhance and complement these strengths.

The Centre has a dedicated and talented staff team led by our CEO, Andy Ruiz Palma, who joined in 2000 as an English teacher. In addition to this staff resource we have around 40 volunteers who provide direct support through activities. We organise Norwich Pride on the last Saturday each July. A free and community led event that helps to ensure Norwich is a city where everyone feels safe and proud to be themselves.

Overview

Established in 2019 and supporting a community of over 30,000 families ARFID Awareness UK is the only registered UK charity dedicated to raising awareness and further information about Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.  As a not-for-profit, we work to provide individuals, parents, carers and medical professionals with up-to-date relevant information, research and support.

We are equally committed to supporting medical professionals across varying specialities, by equipping them with the information they need to ensure that their patients receive an early diagnosis and have access to appropriate care.

Our charitable aims are to:

1) Raising awareness about the condition within the medical and associated professions and the general public in such ways as the trustees shall determine;

2) Providing advice and information in such ways as the trustees shall determine to enable and empower parents and carers to advocate for the children in their care;

3) Facilitating research into the condition, the useful results of which will be published for the public benefit;

4) Potentially providing grants of financial assistance to enable economically disadvantaged families to obtain necessary treatment and medication unavailable via the NHS.

5) Advancing the education of the public in the subject of ARFID.

With regards to our structure, we are a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). As a CIO, our Charity Trustees are protected with limited liability, and whilst they are responsible for helping to manage the organisation, they do not hold dual roles of Company Director as they might with other charity structures.

Time Commitment

Trustees meet twice a year virtually. Meetings last approximately 2 hours.

The Remuneration and Finance, Risk and Investment Committee meet once a year virtually. Meetings last approximately 1 hour.

In addition, Trustees are expected to allow time for reading of papers and preparation for meetings, attending events training and induction.  As a small charity there may also be the requirement for additional input up to 10 hours per annum as required specific to your professional background and expertise

Purpose of the role: 

Trustee (general)

The overall aim of the trustee role is to provide strong leadership, direction and expertise to the governance of ARFID Awareness UK. 

The Board of trustees (‘the Board’) is the body with the legal duty to protect the mission and vision of the FSRH and to ensure that it is run in accordance with legal requirements.

The role of the Board is to provide good governance and leadership by: 

· Shaping ARFID Awareness UK’s organisational strategy 

· Approving organisational statutory policy

· Ensuring the organisation’s financial stability and sustainability, and agreeing the annual operational budget 

· Appointing the Executive Director/s (who is overseen by the Chair of the Board on behalf of the Board) 

· Providing support and constructive challenge to the Executive Director/s and their staff team 

· Setting and monitoring procedures for assessing and managing risk 

· Taking advice from Board members and external specialist advisors 

· Ensuring oversight of the financial position of the charity and providing updates to the Board where appropriate.

As a charity and CIO Board members are charity trustees only. They do not represent any group or organisation in this role and they must act in good faith and in the best interests of ARFID Awareness UK.

Treasurer

· Chair the Remuneration and Finance, Risk and Investment Committee (FR&IC):

· To review progress of financial elements of the operational plan and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees.

· To review the strategic plan in context of financial and budgetary impact. 

· To review the annual budget and make recommendations to the trustees.

· To receive and review proposals for new expenditure outside of the annual budget

· Advise the Remuneration Committee on the affordability of any changes to pay and or benefits.

· To receive reports at each meeting on financial performance and report as required to the Trustees

· To develop an Investment Policy and strategy

· To review the draft annual accounts along with the audit report, ensuring they are in accordance with relevant accounting standards and Charity Commission guidance

Person Specification 

Essential:

· A financial accountancy qualification or equivalent experience (eg ACA, CIMA)

· Experience of investment, strategic planning and budgetary planning 

· Ability to work effectively as a member of a diverse team whilst keeping in mind the responsibility of being an individual trustee

· Experience of guiding an organisation through growth and change

· Confident and effective communication skills including listening skills

· Understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship 

Desirable:

· Knowledge or experience of the charity sector 

· Knowledge of the healthcare sector and/or ARFID

· Experience of board or committee membership in a charity, public sector or commercial organisation.

What will you be doing?

We are looking for a skilled and active trustee who is passionate about making a difference, who can take the lead in championing our vision, values, and local strategy within our wider community. 

Communications Lead Trustee responsibilities: 

• To work alongside the Treasurer, Chief Executive Officer and the rest of the Board to plan what level of funds are required to be generated to ensure the effective running of the charity
• To work alongside the Trustee Board to ensure that all grants are sought and written with the purpose of meeting the charities vision and objectives
• To lead, in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and Fundraiser, on the organisation of local fundraising opportunities to support the running of the charity, including incorporating national Trussell fundraising campaigns/events throughout the year
• To oversee, with operational management support, the writing of high-quality grant applications that are in line with the charity's vision and objectives
• To regularly communicate to the rest of the Trustee Board via meetings or any other communication of any relevant information and/or developments regarding fund raising or grant applications.

Other responsibilities, along with the Board of Trustees, include:

• To ensure the Trustee Board develops a long-term strategy for the food bank with clear objectives which can be monitored and adapted
• To work alongside the Treasurer and the Trustee Board to ensure the organisation’s financial dealings are systematically accounted for and on time, independently examined (on income over £25k) and made publicly available when necessary
• Ensure your charity is accountable, actively complying with statutory accounting and reporting requirements and the law
• To ensure appropriate financial plans are in place for future budget allocations as well as looking after contractual agreements with external partners that award money for core costs and additional projects
• To help promote the organisation to a wider audience of potential funders and beneficiaries
• To ensure the food bank has appropriate procedures to: comply with current legislation and good practice; including employment, health and safety, equal opportunities, safeguarding & GDPR compliance/data protection etc.

• To serve as an additional promoter of the food bank in the community

Ultimately accountable to the Chair of the Board of Trustees, through the National Chairman your role is to ensure that the branch is running in line with SSAFA’s Royal Charter Rules, Regulations, and policies. Also, to ensure that clients and volunteers are safe, all services provided are appropriate and effective and that the branch is financially sound. You will be the public face of SSAFA in your branch area.

We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan. More people than ever are contacting SSAFA for financial, practical and emotional support. To do this we need local branches and volunteers who can coordinate people, ensure the local population know about SSAFA and keep things running smoothly behind the scenes.

Our branches support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.

When would you be needed and where would you be based?

This role is about leadership, coordination, and administration. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. The role requires an ongoing time commitment, usually about 2-3 days per month. In addition, you would need to organise and attend regular meetings throughout the year.

• Providing leadership to the Branch and ensuring that all activities comply with SSAFA regulations both directly, and through the Branch Secretary, other Branch Officers, and Divisional Officers.
• Providing support and guidance to volunteers in office holder roles, and support with recruitment of volunteers into these positions to ensure the sustainability of the branch.
• Ensuring the financial integrity of the Branch, including the appointment of Treasurers and a local fundraising programme to meet branch running costs.
• Ensuring that all data is processed and held in accordance with SSAFA’s data management policies.
• Monitoring volunteer numbers against the demand for support and working with other volunteers, regional and central office staff to attract and recruit new volunteers as required.
• Ensuring that all volunteers are recruited, inducted, supported, and managed in line with SSAFA policies, such as the Volunteering Policy, Volunteer Code of Conduct, Data Protection Policy, and Safeguarding Policy.
• Building relationships with regional and central office staff, local voluntary organisations and, if applicable, SSAFA Service committees, local military establishments, prisons etc.
• Overseeing an appropriate programme of awareness raising so that potential clients, volunteers, and supporters know how to contact the branch.
• Providing timely reports and information to SSAFA’s Central Office
• Overseeing a programme of meetings including an AGM, branch meetings, committee meetings, training etc.
• Supporting any salaried branch staff and ensuring that their line management arrangements are working appropriately.
• Resolve any complaints that are suitable for local resolution in accordance with SSAFA’s Complaints Policy and procedures, referring upwards any that are not suitable for local resolution.

The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

You don’t need a military background for this role, but you should be empathic to the needs of the armed forces community, have some experience of managing people and possess good I.T. skills. What is a Branch Chair?

There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas. Many are further divided into local areas called divisions. Each branch has a Chair to oversee all aspects of the branch. Ultimately accountable to the Chair of the Board of Trustees, through the National Chairman your role is to ensure that the branch is running in line with SSAFA’s Royal Charter Rules, Regulations, and policies. Also, to ensure that clients and volunteers are safe, all services provided are appropriate and effective and that the branch is financially sound. You will be the public face of SSAFA in your branch area.

Why do we need you?

We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan. More people than ever are contacting SSAFA for financial, practical and emotional support. To do this we need local branches and volunteers who can coordinate people, ensure the local population know about SSAFA and keep things running smoothly behind the scenes.

Our branches support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.

When would you be needed and where would you be based?

This role is about leadership, coordination, and administration. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. The role requires an ongoing time commitment, usually about 2-3 days per month. In addition, you would need to organise and attend regular meetings throughout the year.

What would you be doing?

• Providing leadership to the Branch and ensuring that all activities comply with SSAFA regulations both directly, and through the Branch Secretary, other Branch Officers, and Divisional Officers.
• Providing support and guidance to volunteers in office holder roles, and support with recruitment of volunteers into these positions to ensure the sustainability of the branch.
• Ensuring the financial integrity of the Branch, including the appointment of Treasurers and a local fundraising programme to meet branch running costs.
• Ensuring that all data is processed and held in accordance with SSAFA’s data management policies.
• Monitoring volunteer numbers against the demand for support and working with other volunteers, regional and central office staff to attract and recruit new volunteers as required.
• Ensuring that all volunteers are recruited, inducted, supported, and managed in line with SSAFA policies, such as the Volunteering Policy, Volunteer Code of Conduct, Data Protection Policy, and Safeguarding Policy.
• Building relationships with regional and central office staff, local voluntary organisations and, if applicable, SSAFA Service committees, local military establishments, prisons etc.
• Overseeing an appropriate programme of awareness raising so that potential clients, volunteers, and supporters know how to contact the branch.
• Providing timely reports and information to SSAFA’s Central Office
• Overseeing a programme of meetings including an AGM, branch meetings, committee meetings, training etc.
• Supporting any salaried branch staff and ensuring that their line management arrangements are working appropriately.
• Resolve any complaints that are suitable for local resolution in accordance with SSAFA’s Complaints Policy and procedures, referring upwards any that are not suitable for local resolution.

The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

What training and support would you receive?

• Role specific training to prepare you for your voluntary role – caseworker training, caseworker IT system training, volunteer management – attracting, recruiting, and inducting volunteers. 
• Mandatory on-line training modules to complete at home, so you are up to date on how to keep clients, their families safe and personal information safe.
• Local orientation as well as meet and greet sessions with key Central Office and regional teams.
• Access to a range additional e-learning courses as well as local opportunities for your personal and professional development.
• Support from Regional and central staff and peer support from fellow Chairs in neighbouring branches.
• Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses
• Volunteers will be covered by SSAFAs Public Liability Insurance whilst carrying out the role.

What are we looking for?
