Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) is a UK-registered charity (1081455) offering funding (Awards), training and media profile to inspiring leaders of wildlife conservation projects across the Global South. The opportunity

Established in 1993, we have channelled £23 million to 220 conservation leaders in 80 countries across the Global South, benefitting wildlife, landscapes, and people. We are now seeking to expand the team in line with our activities by recruiting a Communications Assistant to maintain and grow the organisation’s online communications across digital and social media platforms and support the team with office administration and event organisation. The post-holder should be keen to make a difference by working in a small team across an impactful organisation. They should have demonstratable skills in online communications and audience engagement, knowledge of wildlife conservation issues, experience with event organisation and the ability to support a vibrant team to flourish. The Communications Assistant will report to The Head of Communications with matrix management to the Operations Manager, dividing their time by working on communications 3 days p/w and office administration and charity events 2 days p/w. The Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) VCSE Alliance launched in January 2024. It aims to influence and facilitate greater collaboration between the regional health system (BNSSG Integrated Care System) and the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise Sector (VCSE). It seeks to do this by enhancing the role of the VCSE sector in the delivery and transformation of wellbeing and health, and cementing our sector’s role as a key strategic partner in the planning, design and delivery of health and care, in its widest possible definition.
The co-design of a new ‘VCSE Brokerage Framework’ with colleagues from the Integrated Care Board (ICB) and System (ICS) is a key priority for the VCSE Alliance in 2024-25. The intention is for it to be a new process by which grants and opportunities can be distributed to the sector.

The VCSE Brokerage Manager’s role is to lead on the further development, piloting, and preparation for launch of the Brokerage Framework. As a vital member of our team, your principal duties will be managing our Complaint Handlers and supervising all service requests. You will be responsible for ensuring that processes are in place to expedite the resolution of service requests.
Additionally, you will provide comprehensive advice and guidance in accordance with Thrive's Complaints Policy and the Housing Ombudsman Code, thereby effectively supporting the team and the broader business. Synergy, Brent is a Housing Related Support (HRS) Service for a range of vulnerable people who have been or are at risk of homelessness. The age eligibility criteria for the service is adults between the ages of 18 to 60, who are identified to have low/medium support needs. Some of the needs we support are:
- Single homeless between ages of 18 to 60
- Socially excluded individuals
- Ex-Offenders
- People with substance misuse

- Learning disability (Low/Medium)
- Women who have come from domestic abuse environments and situations who may need low level support as part of their resettlement following a move on from a refuge or other safe domestic abuse supported accommodation.

- Ensure all case recording, and information is accurately recorded in a timely manner, ensuring electronic records are protected in line with GDPR, and kept up to date and written to a high standard.
- Alongside the Service Manager, champion, and act as a point of reference for safeguarding concerns within the service(s). Ensure all staff attend relevant safeguarding and training and use knowledge to coach and advise the team.
PROPERTY AND HOUSING MANAGEMENT
- Create and manage a welcoming, psychologically informed home environment for residents and participants, ensuring a continuous focus on safety, health, and wellbeing.
- Ensure the accommodation in which residents live is maintained to a high standard, in line with SIG’s property standards and meets all legal and statutory health and fire safety requirements to operate safely, effectively, and efficiently.
- Ensure all repairs and maintenance issues are correctly reported and managed through to completion.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
- Provide support in setting the service’s budget and reviewing monthly management accounts; manage set budgets effectively and ensure resources are maximized.
- Maintain financial management within the service, including but not limited to, invoice management, arrears management, management of petty cash, and expense claims.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contract Management and Internal Auditing; Ensure due diligence is carried out and records are well maintained.
- Administration duties will vary, including operating online systems and ensuring correct processes are followed alongside GDPR and confidentiality.
- Other duties may include but are not limited to, maintaining clean and tidy environments, removing rubbish, ordering supplies, arranging in house events and activities and other general on-site duties.
Other responsibilities than those described above may be required to be undertaken from time to time and will be expected to be performed to as long as it is within the capability and level of the position.
KEY CRITERIA
What we are looking for:
- Understanding and/or experience of working with people of complex backgrounds, ex-offenders, mental health, substance misuse, challenging behaviours
- Experience of working with and engaging with diverse groups of people from varying backgrounds
- IT Proficiency, including Microsoft Office, and the ability to navigate and learn new case management systems and other types of organisational software
- Understanding and/or practical knowledge of the social and societal marginalisation that can be attached to people with mental health issues, addiction, exploitation, homelessness and within the criminal justice system
- Ability to promote the service and provide outreach-based provision, with an ability to liaise and work effectively in partnership with stakeholders
- Ability to follow organisational policies and process in line with external governance

About the role:
You will lead and support a team of Homicide Family Caseworkers to meet VS and Homicide Service standards and contractual requirements. You will be able to demonstrate the excellent organisational skills essential to managing a demanding and diverse workload and will have experience of achieving key performance indicators, as set by the Operation managers and Deputy Head of Service.
We pride ourselves on providing exceptional trauma informed advocacy and support to all service users and you will have an understanding of the impact that trauma and bereavement can have on individuals. We support staff to keep them safe within their role and you will lead on the importance of personal and professional resilience and wellbeing for the team.
You will have excellent communication skills and will support the Operation Managers to maintain the highest standards of service delivery, across a widely geographically dispersed team. You will be prepared to travel across the geographical area including occasional overnight stays to ensure you can meet team members in person as well as online. A driving license and use of a car are both essential as well as access to public transport. You will be reimbursed for all travel costs.
You will also enjoy working closely with a range of stakeholders (including Police Family Liaison Officers and Senior Investigation Officers within the Major Crime teams) and will have experience in building constructive working relationships, focused on delivering the best service for vulnerable service users. You should be a confident presenter, and able to share the service and work we do to inform, educate and encourage notifications and referrals into the service.
