Job summary:
We are looking for an experienced Designer to lead Product and Service Development priorities from our growing Design and Innovation Team at BookTrust.
The Designer, Product and Service Development will lead on activating the key design priorities that have come out of our new strategy. The successful candidate will need to be a multiskilled, ambidextrous designer who can apply human-centered design approaches to online and offline products/services and design end-to-end experiences.
We’re looking for someone with a track record of working with multiple functional teams to design brilliant products and/or services and who has hands-on, practical design experience.
The successful candidate would be involved in projects such as; developing a new group storytelling offer, setting up new co-design cohorts and experimenting with approaches, leading the definition of a new age range product for our early years subscription Story Explorers.
Key Deliverables include
- Lead the design of new products or re-fresh our existing products using design thinking/human-centered approaches. This may include a variety of types of online and offline products incl digital touchpoints and content, in person experiences, resources and books, engagement and training.
- Work with our Research & Impact team to establish a robust design learning approach, that supports us to make rapid progress in designing and delivering new or improved products.
- Work closely with our supply chain, IT, digital, books and content teams to develop prototypes and pilots that will test and refine our product offerings.
- Build strong relationships and influence at all levels and across multidisciplinary teams
- Support the transfer of new/re-developed products into business as usual by engaging and briefing key delivery teams and maintaining oversight of the product.
- Create excellent documentation including concept boards and low fidelity prototypes, process maps, ecosystem maps, journey maps and design briefs to enable product design.
- Work with the relevant D&I team lead to make sure design work aligns to the strategic plan and ambition.
Key Experiences Include
- Has strong practical experience of using design thinking or human centered design approaches to develop new or improve existing products and services (at least 3 years)
- Has an understanding of and experience working across the end-to-end design lifecycle from creating hypotheses, research, synthesising, ideation, prototyping, testing, and iterating.
- Has good workshop design and facilitation skills and can get the best out of cross-functional teams.
- Can adapt their approach to suit different stakeholders and working styles – values progress over perfection.
- Is excited by joining a changing team and transforming organisation.
- Is comfortable doing user testing and research as part of their design work.
- Can execute prototypes and pilots, drawing on cross-organisational skills and expertise.

About the role

About the opportunity

Tenant-related support tasks:
• Every three months, to assess Tenants’ support needs in all aspects of their daily living skills and design support plans in conjunction with the tenant, their families and carers (where appropriate), lead colleagues, care managers and relevant professionals.
• To review and complete Support Plans, Risk Assessments, Health Action Plans, Hospital Passports and Epilepsy Passport where appropriate.
• Complete budgeting plans with Tenants and provide support with money management skills
• Support tenants with shopping for food/household goods in keeping with budgeting plans
• Support tenants with meal preparation, cooking, baking and promoting a healthy eating routine.
• Arranging/supporting/monitoring of health appointments and routine health checks and GP appointments including:
✓ Drug and alcohol services
✓ Clozaril clinic blood testing appointments and monitoring smoking and alcohol levels
✓ Depot clinic appointments
✓ Dental check ups
✓ Optical check ups
✓ Specialist Health checks – e.g. diabetic, epilepsy, dietician, smear tests, Mammograms, Blood pressure and ‘Flu jabs
• Review and update Tenant Personal Information Sheet and other tenant-related documentation.
• To administer medication in line with the organisation’s Medication Administration policy and procedure for the safe administration of medicines.
• Plan, arrange and encourage social activities by the Tenants.
• To supervise and encourage gardening duties and other neighbourly and community responsibilities.
• To provide personal care to tenants as necessary.
Tenancy-related support tasks
• To Support the Tenants in keeping their homes safe and secure and carry out:
• Monthly health and safety audits of properties of key tenants
• Fire risk assessments
• Setting up tenancy related bills
• Contacting and liaising with Utility companies

As Policy and Communications Assistant at the CSA Centre you will play a key role in tackling child sexual abuse, alongside the work of our colleagues across practice, research, policy, communications and training. This is important work - the CSA Centre conservatively estimates that one in ten children will experience some form of child sexual abuse before age of 16, and our ambitious programme seeks to improve the knowledge, skills and confidence of professionals (social workers, teachers, social workers, nurses etc.) in identifying and responding to child sexual abuse. We have already made great progress, but there is much more to be done – and we need your help to do it!
This role is currently funded until 31 March 2026, in line with the current grant funding arrangements for the CSA Centre. This will be reviewed in late 2025, as future funding for the CSA Centre from 2026/27 onwards is clarified.
Although this contract has a permanent status, please be aware that this post is subject to funding currently until March 2026 and therefore should this funding not be extended further, you may be subject to a redundancy consultation or a TUPE arrangement. We are the Centre of expertise on child sexual abuse (CSA Centre). Our aim is to reduce the impact of child sexual abuse through improved prevention and better response. To tackle child sexual abuse we must better understand its causes, scope, scale and impact.
First established in 2017, we are a multi-disciplinary team that is funded by the Home Office, hosted by Barnardo's and we work closely with key partners from academic institutions, local authorities, health, education, police and the voluntary sector. We're proudly independent and our team will challenge any barriers, assumptions, taboos and ways of working that prevent us from increasing our understanding and improving our approach to child sexual abuse.
We bring about change by:

About the team
The Equity, Inclusion and Culture (EIC) Directorate was created in 2021 to look at the future with an equity lens across Shelter and Shelter Scotland as a core part of our strategic aims. It combines critical enabling functions to achieve this: a defined anti-racism, equity and inclusion programme, effective internal communications and engagement, dedicated lived experience activity, innovative learning, and quality volunteering.
