Director of Casework

Our client is a charity which matches members of the public who need free legal help with barristers who are willing to donate their time and expertise in deserving cases for those who are unable to obtain legal aid and cannot afford to pay. They do this in every area of law, across England and Wales before every court and tribunal. The charity believe that fair and equal access to justice is the foundation of our society. That the quality of your legal representation shouldn’t depend on the depth of your pockets, but the merits of your case. They are funded by the dedicated barristers who also volunteer their time and skills.

At a time of change, and as demand for their service increases, they are now recruiting for a dynamic new Director of Casework on a full-time, permanent basis.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Director of Casework will be a key member of the Senior Management Team and will have overall responsibility for the entire casework function and the efficient delivery of pro bono work through projects and partnership work. Your role will encompass overseeing, reviewing and refining the casework process, leading on quality management and leveraging digital tools to enhance service efficiency and improvement. Wikimedia UK is the national platform for open knowledge, bringing together practical and policy expertise about Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. To lead Wikimedia UK’s work with the education sector, focusing on secondary schools, and including universities and non-formal education. Create a step change in the scale and impact of our education work.

Main Duties

1. Programme Development and Delivery

• Lead on the development and delivery of Wikimedia UK’s education programme, in collaboration with the Director of Programmes and Evaluation and other colleagues
• Build on our learning from past and existing activities across Wikimedia UK and the wider movement to develop and roll out a new Wikimedia and information literacy programme for the UK’s secondary school sector; adapting this for the four nations as appropriate
• In conjunction with other Programmes staff, support the delivery of information literacy projects within higher education, through existing and new strategic partnerships as well as smaller projects and interventions such as Wikimedia in the Classroom courses
• Develop and deliver a range of information literacy activities
• Seek opportunities for new partnerships within the education sector, and grow existing relationships with potential delivery partners, for example within the cultural sector
• Work with the Development team and other staff to identify and follow up funding opportunities for existing or potential projects
• Support other staff within the Programmes team in their own work with the education sector

2. Sector Advocacy

• Promote the importance of media and information literacy skills to digital citizenship and civic engagement, and demonstrate Wikimedia’s value in developing those skills through running targeted interventions and disseminating our research and outcomes
• Advocate for a strong focus on media and information literacy skills in schools and university curricula, and work with other staff, partners and allies to campaign for public policy initiatives and investment to support these skills across society

3. Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact

• Run and evaluate the pilots of our work in schools
• Report regularly on programme plans, outputs and outcomes, in collaboration with other staff in the Programmes team
• Handle documentation and record all relevant programme metrics. Update CRM records for partnerships, volunteers and activities

4. Communication and Dissemination

• Write blog posts, create case studies, and generally contribute to the promotion and dissemination of our work and impact, in collaboration with the Communications team

About the role

It’s an exciting time to join CXK as we continue to expand our reach and launch our new 5-year strategy.

We are searching for a Head of Bids, Grants and Tenders to work within our Development and Partnerships Team. This exciting new role will be responsible for writing and submitting compelling bids and proposals that clearly align to CXK’s strategic and operational vision, meeting the needs of our commissioners and funders.

The role will drive income generation and growth for the charity, creating high-quality tender responses on a regular basis, developing a pipeline of current and potential opportunities and proactively ensuring that all business development systems and processes are fully implemented.

As part of our Senior Leadership Team, the Head of Bids, Grants and Tenders will contribute to the strategic development of CXK, working closely with the Director of Development and Partnerships, our service leads, and the wider Senior Leadership Team.

This role will require exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and compelling content aligned to a specification, with a proven track record of successfully responding to complex tender opportunities, and grant submissions.

The responsibilities of the Assistant Finance Business Partner will include:

• Producing management accounts for relevant budget holders and contributing to GPA’s client budget process
• Provide advice on financial treatment of project costs to ensure that all items are correctly assessed for capitalisation, and that the treatment of abortive costs and feasibility works are appropriately treated as RDEL, while being allocated to the correct projects
• Contributing to property reconciliations to ensure all expenditure has been fully recovered from tenants
• Attendance at monthly stakeholder meetings to support the management of projects, supply chain and client relationships
• Supporting any client discussions as required to ensure recovery of billed amounts, keeping accrued income minimal and controlled
• Building a network internally with other finance teams to ensure smooth transition of data and knowledge between interlinked processes, and contributing as part of the wider finance team
• Promote continuous improvement by developing and improving accounting processes and procedures relating to projects and other expenditure
• Preparing balance sheet reconciliations including accruals and prepayments
• Analysing financial performance to identify variances and ensuring transactions are accounted for correctly
• Take ownership of key financial processes, including the preparation and processing of journals, while supporting both internal and external audits.
• Play a proactive role in facilitating forecasting and reporting activities, and use your analytical skills to identify trends, risks, and opportunities within the financial data to inform strategic decision-making

Key Skills & Experience 

• CCAB or equivalent part-qualified or finalist-level candidates required, full qualification desirable.
• Experience in facilities management or estates-related roles (e.g. property management, construction projects) is preferable, however candidates from other backgrounds will be considered.
• Strong month-end management accounting experience required; finance business partnering experience is advantageous.
• Confident communicator with proven stakeholder engagement skills.
• Ambitious and driven, ideally from a fast-paced or client-focused environment.
