Main responsibilities

- Ensure the accuracy and integrity of our employee data and processes, recognising their critical importance for Action Tutoring, including payroll, reporting, and compliance.

Safeguarding
- Actively contribute to the safeguarding team, providing essential support and guidance to the Safeguarding and HR Officer on queries and cases and escalate as relevant to the Designated Safeguarding Officer.
Recruitment and Learning & Development (L&D)
- Coordinate and drive learning and development initiatives across the organisation, ensuring Action Tutoring's L&D approach and action plan are effectively implemented and collaboratively supported.
Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI)
- Work with the Senior Management Team to implement the DEI strategy and action plan.
- Actively support and develop a positive and inclusive working culture across all teams and staff.
Any other ad hoc responsibilities as deemed relevant by the CEO.

Qualification criteria
- The right to work in the UK.
- CIPD level 5 certificate or equivalent experience
- At least two years' experience holding HR responsibilities.
We are looking for some of the following attributes, though you might be more experienced in some areas than others:
- Strong knowledge of HR processes, policies, procedures, employment law, and best practices. You'll be up-to-date with current regulations.
- Knowledge of safeguarding, and understanding of why it is critical to Action Tutoring and a proven ability to ensure processes are correctly followed and appropriately escalated.
- The ability to successfully balance individual needs with the operational and ambitious goals of the organisation. This means demonstrating compassion while supporting our strategic objectives.
- Experience using Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS).
- Strong project management experience.
- Proven experience implementing learning and development initiatives.
- Excellent people management skills, including the ability to be approachable, empathetic, and discreet when required.

This role will see you as a key member of the Finance team, working closely with the Senior Finance Business Partner to deliver robust financially planning and advice to our Fundraising directorate, supporting budget holders, Heads of Departments and Directors across this area.

You’ll be a keen problem solver with an eye for detail, an effective communicator and have a strong focus on customer service, planning and organising.
You will have similar experience in finance and management accounting obtained in a complex organisation, and knowledge of a variety of accounting systems and financial reporting approaches. Experience working within the sector advantageous, but not essential.
As an accountancy qualification isn’t an essential requirement for this role, we would be open to funding elements of a professional accountancy qualification, pending the completion of a probationary period.
You will be contracted to our London, Haig House, Hub with a minimum expectation of two days per week working in person at the Hub (one day must be a Tuesday) and flexibility for working remotely/at home when not on site.

We are seeking an experienced Finance Manager to oversee day-to-day financial operations and support strategic decision making.

About the Role
As Finance Manager, you will play a key role in managing financial processes and ensuring smooth operations. You will:
- Manage the accounts receivable function ensuring that invoices are raised in a timely manner, receipts are recorded on the accounting system and in liaison with the relevant managers ensure that outstanding balances are followed up on a regular and frequent basis
- Manage the accounts payable function ensuring that invoices are paid in a timely manner and supporting line managers with coding and uploading via HubDoc as necessary. Monitor entries in HubDoc (the application used to upload invoices to Xero – the accounting system used) to ensure any failed or unpublished invoices are followed up and accurately processed
- Bank and other Balance Sheet account reconciliations
- Work closely with colleagues in the Programmes team to manage the receipt of income from charitable activities
- Liaise with the Development team and provide weekly breakdowns of grants and donations received to ensure that income can be properly recorded on the donor database
- Monitor and reconcile credit card and petty cash payments ensuring that all financial controls are adhered to
- Supporting the Finance Director with month and year end procedures and reporting
About You
We are looking for a proactive and organised individual who can work both independently and collaboratively. You will bring:
- Have a solid understanding and experience of core accounting functions, financial management and bookkeeping – ideally in the charity or not for profit sector – including managing both accounts receivable and accounts payable
- Have good Excel skills and demonstrable experience of using accounting systems (we currently use Xero)
- Have excellent organisational and prioritisation skills, accuracy and attention to detail
- Have a good understanding of the management of restricted and unrestricted funds in charities
- Possess good communication skills and the ability to work with both finance and non-finance colleagues
- Have experience of preparing schedules and documents for external audit
- Thrive in a small team and are happy to work collaboratively as well as alone on a wide range of finance tasks
- Hold an accountancy qualification (AAT or similar) or are working towards one and are committed to your own professional development through training, webinars or conferences as relevant

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:
- Qualified accountant, with at least 5 years post qualified experience.

Your New Role
As Head of Finance (12-month contract), you’ll take on a varied and pivotal role within the organisation. About Action for ME
Action for ME is the only charity in the UK providing support, including healthcare, to people of all ages affected by ME. The charity was founded by Sue Finlay in 1987 and since then has been taking holistic approach so we can make an impact on multiple fronts - from amplifying the voices of people affected by ME in Government and leading on breakthrough research, to providing "lifeline" support and unique healthcare services on a daily basis.
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), sometimes referred to and diagnosed as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), is a chronic, fluctuating disease, causing symptoms such as post-exertional malaise (PEM), sleep problems, problems with thinking and memory (brain fog), pain and crushing fatigue. There are an estimated 1.3 million people living with ME or ME-like symptoms, including PEM, in the UK alone.
Even in its so-called mildest form, ME can have a significant impact on an individual’s life, and not just on their health. A lack of understanding and awareness about ME means patients can experience disbelief, and even discrimination, from friends, family, health and social care professionals, employers and teachers.
For the first time there is an increased awareness of post viral illness because of the Covid -19 pandemic. After decades of neglect this offers Action for ME an opportunity to accelerate our work for people with ME in a way we have never been able to do before. The intent of everything we do is to pursue positive impact for the lives, rights, and futures of people affected by ME.
Job purpose
This role will deliver an exceptional supporter experience to our donors, building and maintaining strong relationships with our supporters. Working closely with other members of the fundraising and communications teams, you will deliver our supporter journey, maintain regular communication with donors and be an integral part of our fundraising campaigns and appeals.
Key duties
- Work with the Fundraising Operations Manager to deliver our supporter journey, engaging current and prospective donors with our work and giving them an excellent experience of supporting Action for ME.
- Be responsible for creating the methods that ensure each supporter relationship is maximised, increasing retention rates for a growing supporter base. As such you will be required to engage with supporters so that they feel valued, and relationships can be developed further for the benefit of the charity.
- Lead on thanking donors, including making phone calls to donors as part of stewardship.

This role is pivotal in leading on all business development and services-marketing activity to drive and increase brand awareness to ultimately generate referrals, whilst strengthening our position to be the provider of choice to support children with acquired brain injury and neurodisability across the UK and internationally.
You’ll work alongside a cross-organisational team to promote our services to external stakeholders, in particular managing our key account plan to influence, maximise referrals and income generating opportunities. Key to this is cultivating and maintaining relationships with stakeholders including hospital-based clinicians, commissioners at both integrated care boards and local authorities, with professionals with NHS England at a regional and national levels, embassies, medico-legal professionals including case managers and lawyers.
