What will you be doing?
Our Trustees play a vital role in making sure that WMASN achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that WMASN has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision.
As well as fulfilling the duties of a Trustee, the Treasurer maintains an overview of our financial affairs. The Treasurer ensures that effective and appropriate financial measures, controls and procedures are put in place and reports to the Board at regular intervals about the financial health of the organisation.
Your expertise, advice, and guidance would be invaluable in shaping and implementing our financial strategies.
This role is mainly home-based.

Time commitment
· Attend quarterly Board meetings: These meetings typically last around 3 hours, held between 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM. Most meetings are conducted online, with one in-person meeting held annually in June at the charity's offices in central Birmingham.
· Participate in Finance Sub-Committee work: The Treasurer is expected to join the finance sub-committee which meets quarterly for approximately 2 hours.
· The overall time commitment varies depending on the charity's activities, with an average of 10 hours per month, including preparation and follow-up tasks.
Trustees are also expected to contribute ad hoc and occasional time outside of Board meetings, the majority of which is done remotely.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for individuals who can bring energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the role, and who will help broaden the diversity of thinking on our Board. No prior Trustee experience is necessary – we will provide a comprehensive induction and training.
Qualifications and Experience:
· A finance professional. A knowledge of charity finance is an advantage. Otherwise an enthusiasm to learn, drawing from sound commercial experience and an understanding of SMEs.
· A strategic thinker with an ability to balance risk and opportunity.
· Clear communicator with the ability to bring the financial information alive to non-finance specialists.
· Willing to play an active role in areas such as forecasting, setting budgets, liaising with auditors.

We are looking for a Treasurer with experience of working with not for profits in setting strategic financial direction and it would be desirable to have experience in complying with the Charity Commission for England and Wales or similar bodies’ regulations.

As Chair of the Finance Committee, the Treasurer leads on all financial matters. The Finance Committee is responsible for making budget recommendations and financial reports for the Board and for agreeing and overseeing financial and related policies. statutory accounts to the Board. Input is also required during the annual audit process.
The Board
Asylum Welcome is governed by a Board of between 5 and 13 (currently 11) Trustees, who are elected at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September. Trustees normally serve for at least 3 years. Additional Trustees may be co-opted between AGMs.
Trustees are not paid but travel expenses may be claimed for attending meetings.
The Board meets (via Zoom and in person) 5 - 6 times a year, usually early evening on a Thursday. Regular dates are agreed a year in advance.
Individual Trustees also join or lead the Board’s Committees. There are currently a Finance Committee (which meets 5 times a year, a week or so ahead of Board meetings) and a People and Governance Committee. We also have occasional task groups for short-term items.

Scope of the role:
The turnover of the organisation in 2023/24 was £74k although this can vary significantly from year to year depending on legacy income. Membership accounts for c 50% of income. There is currently a planned annual operating deficit of c£55k funded from reserves which, at the end of 2023/24 were £332k, of which £310k were unrestricted.
A review of the organisation’s Business Model is currently being undertaken; the Treasurer will be expected to contribute to this. Both the Board and the F&G Committee meet quarterly.
Meetings normally take place in Gargrave on weekdays during normal working hours although these timings may be reviewed in the future. Further ad hoc meetings with staff and Trustees take place on an as needed basis. Regular use is made of video calls.
Skills and Experience:
The Board is keen to broaden the diversity of Trustees; whilst welcoming expressions of interest from people of any background, applications from minority ethnic groups and from younger people are especially encouraged. The role could provide a development opportunity for an individual looking to acquire / develop experience of the charitable sector.
The role requires some level of numeracy and basic spreadsheeting skills. A formal accountancy background is not required. A knowledge and awareness of company reporting and Charity Commission requirements would be helpful.
The role would suit someone with some experience of general management in a not for profit environment or a commercial organisation.

At Home-Start Birmingham Central and South-West we are seeking a trustee to contribute their expertise and experience to act as Treasurer to the Scheme. Working with the Scheme Manager to oversee the financial management of the Scheme, you will ensure proper financial recording and effective financial procedures are in place. You will also monitor and report on the financial health of the Scheme and oversee the production of financial reports/returns, accounts and audits.
As a Trustee with Treasury focus, you will liaise with trustees and relevant staff, in particular, the Scheme Manager, to oversee the financial viability of the Scheme, make fellow trustees aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data to them. The role will also be responsible for:
· Ongoing reporting of the Scheme's financial position at Trustee meetings;
· Ensuring expenditure is in line with grant criteria, in liaison with the Scheme Manager;
· Monitoring levels of restricted and unrestricted reserves, in liaison with the Scheme Manager;
· Overseeing the production of an annual budget, in liaison with the Scheme Manager;
· Ensuring proper record keeping, in liaison with the Scheme Manager;
· Ensuring effective financial procedures/controls are in place, in liaison with the Scheme Manager; and appraising the financial viability of plans/proposals.
You will also play a vital role in developing our overall Scheme strategy and ensuring the ongoing good governance of the Scheme.
