We make musical comedies on science topics for theatres, festivals and schools, alongside workshops in educational, community and disability settings. Our work also includes music videos, documentaries and books, all created under the artistic direction of award-winning theatre maker and science communicator John Hinton.
Recent projects include The Puddle at the End of the World (about the climate crisis and migration), Light Fantastic! (the science of light), and Forces at Play (a Brooklands Museum commission).
Having become a registered charity in 2024, we are entering an exciting new chapter – expanding our network of creative partners and deepening our inclusion work. We’re now seeking up to four new Trustees to help guide our strategic direction and support the Artistic Director.
We welcome applicants with experience in finance, charity governance, touring theatre, fundraising, or legal expertise, as well as those with lived experience of disability and/or neurodivergence. No prior board experience is required.
Trustees attend four online Board meetings per year and are invited to company events and sharings. The role is voluntary, with travel expenses covered as needed.

What will you be doing?
We are looking for a skilled and active trustee who is passionate about making a difference, who can take the lead in championing our vision, values, and local strategy within our wider community.
Communications Lead Trustee responsibilities:
- To work alongside the Treasurer, Chief Executive Officer and the rest of the Board to plan what level of funds are required to be generated to ensure the effective running of the charity
- To work alongside the Trustee Board to ensure that all grants are sought and written with the purpose of meeting the charities vision and objectives
- To lead, in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and Fundraiser, on the organisation of local fundraising opportunities to support the running of the charity, including incorporating national Trussell fundraising campaigns/events throughout the year
- To oversee, with operational management support, the writing of high-quality grant applications that are in line with the charity's vision and objectives
- To regularly communicate to the rest of the Trustee Board via meetings or any other communication of any relevant information and/or developments regarding fund raising or grant applications.
Other responsibilities, along with the Board of Trustees, include:
- To ensure the Trustee Board develops a long-term strategy for the food bank with clear objectives which can be monitored and adapted
- To work alongside the Treasurer and the Trustee Board to ensure the organisation’s financial dealings are systematically accounted for and on time, independently examined (on income over £25k) and made publicly available when necessary
- Ensure your charity is accountable, actively complying with statutory accounting and reporting requirements and the law
- To ensure appropriate financial plans are in place for future budget allocations as well as looking after contractual agreements with external partners that award money for core costs and additional projects
- To help promote the organisation to a wider audience of potential funders and beneficiaries
- To ensure the food bank has appropriate procedures to: comply with current legislation and good practice; including employment, health and safety, equal opportunities, safeguarding & GDPR compliance/data protection etc.
- Act with reasonable care and skill, giving your time, thought and energy to your role
- To serve as an additional promoter of the food bank in the community

Overview:
Established in 2019 and supporting a community of over 30,000 families ARFID Awareness UK is the only registered UK charity dedicated to raising awareness and further information about Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder. As a not-for-profit, we work to provide individuals, parents, carers and medical professionals with up-to-date relevant information, research and support.
We are equally committed to supporting medical professionals across varying specialities, by equipping them with the information they need to ensure that their patients receive an early diagnosis and have access to appropriate care.
Our charitable aims are to:
- Raising awareness about the condition within the medical and associated professions and the general public in such ways as the trustees shall determine;
- Providing advice and information in such ways as the trustees shall determine to enable and empower parents and carers to advocate for the children in their care;
- Facilitating research into the condition, the useful results of which will be published for the public benefit;
- Potentially providing grants of financial assistance to enable economically disadvantaged families to obtain necessary treatment and medication unavailable via the NHS.
- Advancing the education of the public in the subject of ARFID.
With regards to our structure, we are a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). As a CIO, our Charity Trustees are protected with limited liability, and whilst they are responsible for helping to manage the organisation, they do not hold dual roles of Company Director as they might with other charity structures.
Time commitment:
Trustees meet twice a year virtually. Meetings last approximately 2 hours.
The Remuneration and Finance, Risk and Investment Committee meet once a year virtually. Meetings last approximately 1 hour.
In addition, Trustees are expected to allow time for reading of papers and preparation for meetings, attending events training and induction. As a small charity there may also be the requirement for additional input up to 10 hours per annum as required specifically to your professional background and expertise
Purpose of the role:
Trustee (general)
The overall aim of the trustee role is to provide strong leadership, direction and expertise to the governance of ARFID Awareness UK.
The Board of trustees (‘the Board’) is the body with the legal duty to protect the mission and vision of the FSRH and to ensure that it is run in accordance with legal requirements.
The role of the Board is to provide good governance and leadership by:
- Shaping ARFID Awareness UK’s organisational strategy
- Approving organisational statutory policy
- Ensuring the organisation’s financial stability and sustainability, and agreeing the annual operational budget
- Appointing the Executive Director/s (who is overseen by the Chair of the Board on behalf of the Board)
- Providing support and constructive challenge to the Executive Director/s and their staff team
- Setting and monitoring procedures for assessing and managing risk
- Taking advice from Board members and external specialist advisors
- Ensuring oversight of the financial position of the charity and providing updates to the Board where appropriate.
As a charity and CIO Board members are charity trustees only. They do not represent any group or organisation in this role, and they must act in good faith and in the best interests of ARFID Awareness UK.
Treasurer
- Chair the Remuneration and Finance, Risk and Investment Committee (FR&IC):
- To review progress of financial elements of the operational plan and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees.
- To review the strategic plan in context of financial and budgetary impact.
- To review the annual budget and make recommendations to the trustees
- To receive and review proposals for new expenditure outside of the annual budget
- Advise the Remuneration Committee on the affordability of any changes to pay and or benefits.
- To receive reports at each meeting on financial performance and report as required to the Trustees
- To develop an Investment Policy and strategy
- To review the draft annual accounts along with the audit report, ensuring they are in accordance with relevant accounting standards and Charity Commission guidance
Person specification:
Essential:
- A financial accountancy qualification or equivalent experience (eg ACA, CIMA)
- Experience of investment, strategic planning and budgetary planning
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a diverse team whilst keeping in mind the responsibility of being an individual trustee
- Experience of guiding an organisation through growth and change
- Confident and effective communication skills including listening skills
- Understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
Desirable:
- Knowledge or experience of the charity sector
- Knowledge of the healthcare sector and/or ARFID
- Experience of board or committee membership in a charity, public sector or commercial organisation.

We currently support around 300 people on a long-term basis in around 270 shared lives homes and have up to a further 140 people using our short break services.We provide support to people with learning disabilities, people who have a diagnosis of dementia, a physical or sensory disability, mental ill health and parents who have a learning disability with their child.We currently have five contracts from local authorities across Cornwall, Devon and Somerset to support our work and a range of project funding totalling around £1.8 million per annum.

Our uncompromisable support services are wide-ranging and bespoke to each family. We provide symptom management, end-of-life care, post-death care, short breaks, counselling, sibling support groups, music therapy, home visits and more.

We are looking for a new Treasurer and Trustee to join our Council of Trustees. This is a fantastic opportunity for a qualified management accountant to lend financial expertise and strategic leadership to support the Trust’s governance and long-term impact.
Our Treasurer will work closely with the Finance Manager and Chief Executive Officer, providing financial insight, stewardship, and best-practice advice. As part of the Board of Trustees, you will help set the strategic direction for Tees Valley Wildlife Trust, championing our mission to create wildlife-rich places and wildlife-rich lives across the region.
Time commitment
The full Council meets five times a year, typically on weekday afternoons at the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust HQ.
Committees meet during office hours, usually at Trust HQ or online.
Trustees are expected to attend at least 75% of Council meetings, plus the Annual General Meeting, held at the start of Autumn.
Term of office
Trustees serve on a voluntary basis for an initial three-year period and may be reappointed for additional three-year terms (most trustees complete two terms). We provide a full induction plus ongoing training and personal development opportunities.

Responsibilities
As Chair, your responsibilities will include:
- Leading ETS Committee meetings (four times per year) and associated working groups
- Overseeing validation events for youth work qualifications
- Collaborating closely with NYA’s Head of Workforce Development and ETS Officer
- Representing the ETS Committee at national forums, including JETS
- Reporting regularly to the NYA Board on committee activity and sector developments

Time Commitment

What will you be doing?
This role involves leading on fundraising and grant applications at board level, ensuring that the Trustee Board is aware of and kept up to date with any fundraising/grant developments.
Fundraising & Grants Lead Responsibilities:
- To work alongside the Treasurer, Chief Executive Officer and the rest of the Board to plan what level of funds are required to be generated to ensure the effective running of the charity
- To work alongside the Trustee Board to ensure that all grants are sought and written with the purpose of meeting the charities vision and objectives
- To lead, in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and Fundraiser, on the organisation of local fundraising opportunities to support the running of the charity, including incorporating national Trussell fundraising campaigns/events throughout the year
- To oversee, with operational management support, the writing of high-quality grant applications that are in line with the charity's vision and objectives
- To regularly communicate to the rest of the Trustee Board via meetings or any other communication of any relevant information and/or developments regarding fund raising or grant applications
Other responsibilities, along with the Board of Trustees, include:
- To ensure the Trustee Board develops a long-term strategy for the food bank with clear objectives which can be monitored and adapted
- To work alongside the Treasurer and the Trustee Board to ensure the organisation’s financial dealings are systematically accounted for and on time, independently examined (on income over £25k) and made publicly available when necessary
- Ensure your charity is accountable, actively complying with statutory accounting and reporting requirements and the law
- To ensure appropriate financial plans are in place for future budget allocations as well as looking after contractual agreements with external partners that award money for core costs and additional projects
- To help promote the organisation to a wider audience of potential funders and beneficiaries
- To ensure the food bank has appropriate procedures to: comply with current legislation and good practice; including employment, health and safety, equal opportunities, safeguarding & GDPR compliance/data protection etc.
- Act with reasonable care and skill, giving your time, thought and energy to your role
- To serve as an additional promoter of the food bank in the community
