About the role  

Our next CEO will be someone who excels at building relationships and partnerships, being unafraid to advocate and challenge effectively to communicate the student voice and further the goals of the Charity. You will need to be an inclusive and empowering leader, able to bring people together towards a shared vision. You will be able to motivate our permanent staff and elected student leaders to thrive in their roles, providing support, guidance and development.

You’ll have a good understanding of charity governance, financial management and strategic planning. We have been through some significant change across our team over recent years and are looking for someone that will bring a clear vision and ambition for the Students’ Union.   

The successful candidate won’t necessarily need to come from the Higher Education sector, but you must be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of the trends and issues that affect our students.

Cancer52 is a national organisation, created in 2007 by Professor Sir Mike Richards, CBE, then National Clinical Director for Cancer, and registered as a charity in England and Wales in September 2017.

We are an exceptional organisation, providing one voice for all those affected by rare and less common cancers.  Historically, these cancers have been underrepresented and under-funded.  Today, they represent 47% of people diagnosed with cancer, but 55% of all cancer deaths – a hidden majority.  Cancer52’s aim is to change this by taking the collective voice of our members to those who influence cancer policy, research, services and treatment.

Cancer52 is recognised for its strong convening role, bringing together our 115 member charities with organisations in industry, government, the NHS and other stakeholders to address the inequalities faced by patients with rare and less common cancers.  Our reputation is strong and we are in a unique position to provide a common voice for these underrepresented cancers.  The figures for people with these cancers are challenging and there is much work to do.

After a hugely successful tenure during which Cancer52’s size and influence has grown dramatically, our current CEO is retiring from full time work in July. The Board of Trustees is now seeking to appoint a successor to build on the successes and achievements of recent years.

To be our next Chief Executive, you will be a talented leader, able to motivate and empower others  and develop strong internal and external stakeholder relationships. You will also be an inspiring and authentic individual who is passionate, confident and engaging as the key spokesperson of the organisation and a representative of the diverse Cancer52 membership.

You will be capable of influencing decisions at senior levels of government, in the NHS and in partner organisations operating in the fields of cancer research, prevention, diagnosis and treatment. As our Chief Executive, your role is to be a key proponent of the campaigning and influencing drive of the charity, setting the overall strategy and vision for the organisation.

In addition to the core management competencies required, the role requires demonstrable leadership which will inspire others, along with a comprehensive understanding of Cancer52’s purpose and the problems faced by those charities and organisations representing the rare and less common cancer communities.

Effective networking will be a key skill set, and will enable you to actively seek out, engage and establish productive relationships with political decision makers, NHS leadership and charity CEOs to further our goals.  Your approach will be collaborative, motivating stakeholders to engage with our work.

Success will be achieved through collective effort, but what will also be fundamental to the achievement of our ambitions will be funding. Going forward, and alongside our influencing work, you will be seeking out the funding opportunities that deliver a sustainable financial future and enable us to increase our impact.

About the Students’ Union 

UCA SU represents 5,200 students, primarily across three main sights at Farnham, Epson and Canterbury. We are an independent democratic charity and membership organisation; we have student leadership at every level. 

We're a democratic, membership organisation and all students at the University of Creative Arts are automatically members of the Union. Overall legal responsibility for the Students' Union rests with our Board of Trustees which is made up of three full-time Sabbatical Officers, four student trustees and three external trustees. The Sabbatical officers are elected each year by, and from, the student membership of the university. They take a year out of their studies (or immediately after graduating) to take on a fulltime paid staff role and to serve as a trustee.

We have done a huge amount of work over the last 6 months to turn the organisation around to ensure it is wholly focussed on supporting our diverse membership who study at the three campuses. We have updated our staffing structure to have our expertise equally focussed on each campus and have also changed our sabbatical officer structure to do the same.

At UCA SU, we genuinely have creativity at our heart and are very excited to welcome a new CEO on Board who shares our values and passion for creativity.

We are currently carrying out detailed research into the needs of our membership, and we can’t wait for our new CEO to review this research with us to shape our new strategic direction.

We are working in partnership with The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), the charity and membership led organisation that enhances communities, so everyone can enjoy being in, on and around water, safely. RLSS UK has a proud history of helping to save the number of lives lost to drowning, which still stands at an average of 312 lives lost to accidental drownings in the UK and Ireland, each year. Their mission is to be the leader in lifesaving and lifeguarding in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, sharing their expertise and knowledge with as many people as possible, giving everyone the potential to save lives and enjoy water, safely.

The charity has used their extensive, world-leading knowledge of water safety and training to develop a comprehensive range of vocational qualifications and a series of awards and education programmes, which all have the ultimate aim of preventing drowning and stopping unnecessary loss of life. Their portfolio includes the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) - the premier lifeguard training programme.

RLSS UK is seeking to appoint a new CEO, who will be responsible for the leadership and smooth and effective running of RLSS UK. The CEO will have oversight of all departments, with overarching accountability for strategic financial management, income development and diversification, ensuring annual organisational targets are met, and will be responsible for high level relationship management, working as an effective ambassador for RLSS UK.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate:

• An inspirational, decisive, and entrepreneurial leader, ideally with experience gained in the charity/non-profit sector and/or in membership or volunteer focused organisations.
• Track record of leading cohesive and high-performing teams, including experience of engaging a volunteer network as well as managing a staff team.
• Experience of working with a Board with an elected membership element and respectful of the different dynamic this creates.
• Proven financial management and governance experience.
• Experience of building high level organisational partnerships, optimising existing income streams, and developing additional revenue sources.

We are working in partnership with MuirCroft Housing Association, a not-for-profit social landlord providing sheltered housing in Southampton, who are seeking to appoint a new Chief Executive to lead on and bring a new perspective to an already successful charity.

In existence for over 40 years, MuirCroft provides sheltered housing to rent for over 60's and today supports well over 100 tenants. But MuirCroft is about much more than just its buildings, it’s a thriving, happy community of people living their own lives but with the support of both staff and fellow tenants.

With a track record of successful senior appointments, and with specialist skills in the sector the new Chief Executive will lead a well-structured, rigorous, and fully supported service. 

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

• Experience of senior leadership in an organisation or major service in a relevant field, with a proven track record in both strategic and operational management 
• Understanding of the social housing operating environment, the regulatory framework provided by the Regulator of Social Housing and other sector regulators.
• Experience of developing financial and non-financial management information, and have excellent budget preparation, setting, monitoring and financial forecasting.
• Effectively work with Board or Management Committee to develop exciting and realistic strategies that deliver the vision and objectives who can lead the development of organisational and cultural change.

The ideal candidate will be an effective team player and 'people person' who is able to demonstrate the highest levels of integrity and standards and use their skills and experience of the small staff team, to best effect.  You will have the ability to work on your own initiative and be able to lead and positively represent the organisation.  The new Chief Executive Officer will be an ambassador, playing a key role in building effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.  You will have excellent communication skills and the ability to motivate, lead and inspire a team.  The new Chief Executive Officer will embrace regular daily tasks, as well as formulating and implementing forward-looking strategy.
