About the role
The Head of External Relations is a key senior leadership role at Rainforest Foundation UK (RFUK) responsible for overseeing effective fundraising and communications strategies to support the organisation's work protecting rainforests and the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
Reporting to the Executive Director, this role is responsible for building RFUK’s external profile and support for its ambitious 2033 vision to scale up community-led protection of tropical forests. The position combines strategic communications, outreach, targeted campaigns, and media engagement to connect RFUK’s impactful programmes to its growing audience, supporters and funders.
This a key role in the organisation, managing a small team, working closely with the Programmes team to craft compelling narratives that drive engagement and action, with the Operations team to ensure financial sustainability, and with the Executive Director to create and implement targeted fundraising strategies.

Pay and Conditions of Service
This post is permanent and full-time.
The annual full-time salary for this role is between £47,911 and £53,890, inclusive of London Weighting.
There is a probationary period of six months for this post.
Full-time staff are entitled to 25 days holiday leave per annum with additional days for long service. The timing of holidays must fit in with the needs of the Foundation and must be agreed in advance. In addition to annual holidays there is paid time off for national holidays.
The post will be based in the London office at Unit 17 Deane House Studios, 27 Greenwood Place, London NW5 1LB. Staff currently work two to three days a week in the office.

Job Purpose
The Director of Finance and Operations plays an important role within the College, providing strategic leadership, oversight and development of a portfolio of corporate support functions. This includes finance, membership, HR, IT and facilities.
This role has responsibility for a team of 8 members of staff and also forms a key part of our Senior Leadership Team, taking corporate responsibility for the overall direction and operational management of the College.
Main responsibilities
1. To lead the strategic and operational management of our finance function
Provide strategic leadership and quality assurance for the annual budgeting and forecasting process, delivered by the Financial Controller and finance team
Review and challenge monthly management accounts, forecasts and financial performance reports prepared by the Financial Controller, working closely with budget holders
Present financial reports and analysis to the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees to underpin informed discussion and decision-making
Oversee, develop and maintain effective finance systems to reflect best practice and to help ensure timely and accurate figures
Provide assurance to the Chief Executive and Trustees that appropriate systems and controls are in place to ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements
Provide executive oversight of the annual audit and statutory reporting process led by the Financial Controller, including the production of the annual report, working closely with auditors and ensuring that any management control points are implemented promptly
Lead trustee engagement on investment strategy and monitor investment performance
Support the operation of the College’s trading subsidiary
Co-ordinate the College’s use of restricted funds, ensuring compliance with contractual terms.
2. To foster individual and organisational development
Monitor and develop our organisational culture, championing our values at every opportunity
Empower staff and teams to actively inform the direction of the College and our activities
Oversee the delivery of our equity, diversity and inclusion strategy, evaluating progress against key metrics
Support the implementation and delivery of our new strategy from 2027.
3. To oversee other areas of our corporate support function
Oversee our membership strategy to support sustained growth, identifying new opportunities to develop our offer to UK and international members
Lead on operational and contractual efficiencies and service improvement programmes including IT and facilities management, ensuring the smooth running of the organisation, raising productivity, and delivering value for money
Oversee all aspects of our HR function, including learning and development, in line with our values and behaviours framework, and new organisational strategy from 2027.
Oversee the robust management of risk, data protection, and health & safety compliance.
4. To lead the department
Lead and support the team, including through the identification and delivery of professional development opportunities
Establish individual and team objectives linked to our strategic priorities, monitoring and holding colleagues to account for delivery
Share key updates with the team on a regular basis and champion the department’s work internally
Ensure rigorous financial management and long-term forecasting to ensure departmental and College-wide sustainability
Support and provide strategic insight to committees, including the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee
Establish appropriate structures and processes to drive forward key projects, including collaborative working across the College and evaluating success against identified metrics.
5. To be an active member of our Senior Leadership Team (SLT)
Provide leadership and support across the organisation, ensuring consistency of operation, high standards of service and driving a one-team approach
Agree organisation-wide policies and procedures and ensure their correct implementation
Assume corporate responsibility for trustee and senior leadership decisions

Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience
A CCAB-qualified accountant, with at least five years of experience in a senior leadership role
Detailed knowledge of charity financial management, budget preparation and reporting, risk, GDPR and health and safety
Experience of leading successful growth, such as through the delivery of a membership or fundraising strategy, alongside high levels of organisational productivity and efficiency
Experience of delivering against challenging performance targets, and of managing others to do so
Experience of HR, IT and Facilities management

1- Purpose:
The Finance and Operations Manager ensures the effective financial, administrative, and operational functioning of Right To Play UK and support the establishment of Right To Play Ireland by overseeing accurate financial records, coordinating people and legal processes, and continuously improving business systems and practices to support and enable successful fundraising outcomes.

3-Scope (geographical and/or functional), Impact and Autonomy
The incumbent operates with significant autonomy, holding delegated authority over financial management, systems, and office operations, including safeguarding all funds received, and preparing supplier invoices for payment. They operate with high trust and independence and is expected to safeguard assets and ensure full statutory, fiscal, and HR data compliance.
4-Leadership and Staff management
The role exercises functional and collaborative leadership with no direct reports, providing guidance and influence across Right To Play UK and Right To Play Ireland. Leadership is demonstrated through setting standards and supporting teams to work effectively within organizational policies and financial controls, by providing authoritative guidance to the offices on financial policies, internal controls, and risk management; escalating material risks and recommending mitigation actions to the Executive Director and HQ Finance. The incumbent is expected to operate effectively in a low segregation environment due to small staff size by implementing and monitoring compensating controls (spot checks, reviews with Executive Director, exception reporting) to maintain strong control integrity.

The incumbent requires secure access to accurate financial, donor, and operational data - primarily through the MCRM and ERP systems - which is already identified and readily available and applies established analysis and reporting methods as a super-user to interpret information, ensure compliance, protect confidential constituent records, and support informed financial and operational decision-making.
6- Innovation and Improvements
The incumbent is expected to drive process improvements and functional innovations within the offices—data integrity, financial tracking, and internal collaboration—while supporting others to implement these changes, with major or high-risk innovations subject to approval by the Executive Director.
7- Relationships & Communications: Internal / External:
The incumbent maintains key internal relationships with all team members, doner services team and HQ colleagues in MCRM, Finance, and People & Culture, and external relationships with Board members, and event partners, using effective communication and donor stewardship to support organizational objectives and ensure smooth operations. The incumbent stewards Right To Play UK and Right To Play Ireland’s fiduciary obligations and is the primary authorized liaison with banks, landlords, insurance and payroll providers, external auditors, tax advisors, and legal counsel.
