One of the barriers for female refugee clients to access learning is finding suitable and reliable childcare, whilst they attend sessions. To help them overcome this barrier, we have set up an on creche on site for clients attending the course, managed by a member of staff who is qualified in Level 3 Childcare. Volunteers in this role will have the opportunity to support our operations and services by carrying out the main task of their role as set out below.
Specifically, the volunteer role includes:
- Assisting and taking direction from Refugee Council members of staff in helping to take care of the children by carrying out activities with them.
- Assisting with the set up and organising creative and play activities with the children.
- Assisting with song and story time
- Assisting with the set up and pack up of the Creche equipment for each session.
- Providing emotional support, especially for children new to the Creche
- Ensure children are playing in a safe environment.
- Offering a nurturing and supportive environment for the children
- Fetching the child’s parent from the course when they need changing, feeding or if they are unable to be soothed.
Please note that volunteers are not responsible for feeding or changing nappies as part of this volunteer role and remains the responsibility of the client during the course. Volunteers are never to be left alone with any child at any time. Otherwise, you will have to do enhanced DBS checks.

ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for an enthusiastic, creative and proactive individual with experience
teaching children to run one of our weekly ESOL classes for Spanish/Portuguese
speaking children who have recently migrated to the UK. The post-holder will be
responsible for assisting in the delivery of creative and interactive ESOL classes for
up to 8 children aged 5-7 years old OR 8-12 years old.
Some children on the project are still waiting to start school in the UK and coming to
IRMO is often the only time in the week they have fun and learn with children their
age. For this reason, it is particularly important that our ESOL Teachers understand
the challenges migrant children face and show empathy.
The overall aims of the ESOL classes are to equip children with the English Language
skills they need to: thrive and integrate more easily into their new schools; reach
their full potential; make new friends; feel part of the wider English-speaking
community; and rebuild their lives in the UK.
MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
● Delivering creative and interactive ESOL classes in a safe and inclusive learning
environment for children;

Camberwell After School Project is looking for a proactive and enthusiastic Treasurer to support this award winning children's charity which has provided a nurturing and positive childcare experience to many children for almost 40 years.
The Tresurer will oversee the financial affairs of the organisation and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice.
The post holder will also be responsible for monitoring and reporting on the financial health of the organisation to the Board of Trustees.
Key Responsibilities:
- Liaise with relevant employees, committee members and/or volunteers to ensure the financial viability of the organisation.
- Ensure fellow Trustees are aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data to them.
- Regularly report the financial position at Trustee meetings (balance sheet, cash flow, fundraising performance etc).
- Oversee the production of an annual budget and propose its adoption at the last meeting of the previous financial year.
- Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures and controls are in place, ie:
- Cheque signatories
- Purchasing limits
- Purchasing systems
- Salary payments
- Pensions
- PAYE and NI payments
- Others as appropriate
- Appraising the financial viability of plans, proposals and feasibility studies.
- Lead on appointing and liaising with auditors/an independent examiner.
- Oversee the finance records on Xero ensuring posting and bookkeeping is kept up-to-date.
- Regularly carry out reconciliations/ oversee regular reconciliations by the Finance Officer.
- Authorise payments to creditors as appropriate and arrange appropriate signatures on payments.
Skills, experience and qualities we are seeking are:

- Forward thinking and visionary.
- Knowledge and experience of current and fundraising finance practice relevant to voluntary and community organisations.
- Knowledge and understanding of charity law
- Knowledge of bookkeeping and financial management (as necessary).
- Good financial analysis skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
- Good people skills
- Willing to take on the challenges of collective working towards a sustainable organisation.

At Doorstep Library, we’re dedicated to bringing the magic of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of children who need our support.
With 1 in 4 children in the UK leaving primary school unable to read or write properly, we recruit and train in-person and online volunteers to introduce children from under-resourced areas to the pleasure of reading.
What’s Involved?
As a Doorstep Library reading volunteer, you’ll visit the same families at their homes every week with a backpack full of books to share with the children and encourage their love of reading.
You will:
- Handpick books based on the children’s age, interests, and reading level
- Visit their homes with your volunteer partner for 20-minute reading sessions
- Leave behind a selection of books for the children to borrow for the week
Our unique home-based approach allows our volunteers to build trusting relationships with families, helping them to connect with the community and equip them with the skills they need to succeed later in life.
When and Where?
We have volunteer opportunities in: Hammersmith, Parsons Green, Fulham Broadway, Shepherds Bush, East Acton, Latimer Road, Euston, Kings Cross, Marylebone, Edgware Road, Queens Park, Pimlico, Brixton and Tulse Hill.
- Time commitment: One evening a week, or once every 3 weeks as a Stand-In Volunteer
- Hours per week: 2.5
- Days: Our projects run on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays depending on where you are based from 4:30pm – 7:00pm
Skills/Experience Needed
- Be able to make a regular weekly commitment or once every 3 weeks for a Stand-In Volunteer during school term time
- Be compliant with our safeguarding procedures, complete an Enhanced DBS, Child Barred List check, and provide 2 references
- Enjoy spending time with children and believe in education for all
- Have comfortable fluency in English
- Be non-judgmental and respectful of a variety of lifestyles and children’s learning
- Have excellent communication skills – be able to listen to families and communicate effectively with Project Leaders (including via text/emails/calls with Doorstep Library staff)
- Be reliable – always attending a pre-agreed session and giving plenty of notice in advance of absences
- Be friendly – to build good relationships with families, your volunteer partner and the rest of the team
- Be confident – to lead the session or mentor a new volunteer
- Be patient, persistent and flexible – tailoring your approach to each family’s needs
Doorstep Library is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and all those it comes into contact with. All volunteers undergo rigorous safer recruitment processes including specified interview questions, a DBS check, and the collection of written and/or verbal references. Safeguarding training is a mandatory part of the induction process for all volunteers, and they are expected to always adhere to our safeguarding policies and procedures.
