What You'll Be Doing

As our Director of Fundraising, you will lead the strategy and delivery of all fundraising and membership activities for the Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF). This senior leadership role is critical to securing sustainable income and growth for the future.

You'll drive innovation across individual giving, legacy campaigns, corporate partnerships, and membership, while inspiring and guiding a small, motivated team.

Land, and the way that it is owned and managed, impacts on all of us. It has different places in all of our histories, whatever our backgrounds or heritage, whether our experience is of public or private ownership, colonialism, dispossession, or migration, the difficulties of making a living in a rural economy or the daily impacts of urbanisation and gentrification. How we currently own, manage and make decisions about land lies at the heart of many of our current social, economic and environmental challenges and injustices. 

Shared Assets works with people and land for a just future.

We undertake advice & support, research, movement building, communications and resourcing work to support, mobilise and advocate for the development of models of managing land that create shared social, economic and environmental benefits. We see systems change as a core value of our work and seek to be transformative, both through externally-facing projects and internal approaches and ways of working.

Our research work supports collective learning related to working on and with the land. We communicate our findings through articles, blogs, podcasts, reports, events, and more - building a shared evidence base to support the development of a just land system. Through our research, we seek to make an impact at a local and a systemic level. We want to create conditions that allow people and communities to thrive, and promote care for the land and environment. We do this work on both a commercial and grant funded basis.

The role holder will lead the full range of Shared Assets’ research projects, from scoping and design through to delivery, follow up and evaluation. They will need to have experience of designing and carrying out research and learning activities with a wide range of partners - including academics, community groups, NGOS and local authorities - in collaborative ways. In the past we have worked on research projects of many scales - from large European Union funded consortia, to smaller, one-off pieces which help a local authority or community organisation move forward with their work. Often our research work involves collaborating with a group of other civil society organisations to provide evidence of why change in the land, food and farming system is needed, and generate action on these issues. 

The main areas of work are to: manage and deliver funded research projects (or projects with a research component) with partners, reflect with colleagues on what we are learning within and across workstreams as an organisation and sector, use this knowledge to create new ideas for research work, and support fundraising for these, as part of our ‘infrastructure’ role.

What you’ll do

Since 2019, we have been building a cross-cutting thematic programme using our investor accountability, corporate engagement and public policy toolkit to build a movement to harness the power of the investment system to address commercial determinants of health.

In 2022, we launched Long-term Investors in People’s Health (LIPH), a cross-cutting programme of work leveraging our toolkit of investor accountability, corporate engagement and policy advocacy. It is one of ShareAction’s largest programmes. Since the launch of LIPH, we have run high-profile campaigns to get large food manufacturers and retailers to improve their health disclosures and sell healthier products via our Healthy Markets Initiative (HMI); recently set up a Clean Air Initiative (CAI); mobilised investors to engage with corporates, the UK government, and standard-setting bodies on issues such as clean air and sick leave policies; and partnered with academics to grow the evidence base on the financial materiality of health. We have ambitious plans to take this work forward and are looking for a new Head of the team to help us do so.

In this role, you will:

• Oversee and contribute to the successful implementation of ShareAction’s strategy to tackle poor health via its LIPH programme, a cross-cutting programme of work leveraging our toolkit of investor accountability, corporate engagement and policy advocacy.
• Lead and motivate a team of 10 staff members and directly line manage at least three of them.
• Ensure adequate risk management and Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) processes are in place.
• Together with the Fundraising team and Co-Director of Corporate Engagement, be responsible for securing funding for the LIPH programme, including writing funding bids, supporting with relationship management, supporting the coordination of our Funders’ Governance Group, and helping produce update reports.
• Plan, manage and report on budget for the LIPH programme, delegating workstream and campaign budgets where there are appropriate leads.
• Develop and nurture strategic relationships with senior external stakeholders, including funders, journalists, investors, and civil society organisations.
• Act as one of ShareAction’s subject matter experts on commercial determinants of health, keeping your knowledge up to date with developments across academia, civil society, and public policy.
• Act as a media spokesperson for the team and represent it in internal and external forums.
• Work with peers at the “Head of” level to play a leadership role across ShareAction.

What you’ll bring to the team

Essential

• Passionate about harnessing the power of the financial system to address poor health across the commercial determinants of health.
• Excellent organisation and project management skills, with demonstrable experience leading ambitious programmes of work.
• Great team player with experience of building, managing and leading a high-performing team based on mutual trust, respect and inclusion and providing mentoring support to more junior members of staff.
• A strategic mindset.
• Comfortable with working autonomously, setting priorities, managing workload and driving delivery against objectives for yourself and your team.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to flex style according to your audience.
• Experience building relationships at a senior level with stakeholders across the private and public sectors, with the ability to understand a range of perspectives and to influence with respect and diplomacy.
• Either a strong professional knowledge and understanding of the commercial determinants of health and/or of responsible investment.

Desirable

• Substantial experience leading and/or feeding into an advocacy campaign.
• Previous experience securing philanthropic funding for programmes of work.
• Experience managing budgets.
• Experience speaking directly to the media and representing an organisational position.
• Proficiency with common office software, including Microsoft Office, Outlook, SharePoint, Cascade, and Salesforce.

ShareAction is currently developing its strategy for the next five years, so it might be that we need to make a few tweaks to your list of responsibilities.

We have a formal hybrid working policy in place. As Head of the team, we expect that you will work from the office at least every Tuesday if you are based in London and at least two Tuesdays a month if you are based outside of London. The team holds its weekly meetings on Tuesday morning.

About the role

Reporting in to the Finance Operations Lead, the Restricted Funds Manager will act as the Finance business partner to the Multi-Country Cluster (MCC) for restricted funding programmes and to ensure the integrity of restricted funds financial reporting, fostering a team mindset 
and facilitate meaningful collaboration across teams.

The post-holder will provide strategic insight into financial restricted management reporting and being able to influence key stakeholders.

Some of the main responsibilities of the Restricted Funds Manager include:

• Drive effective decision in collaboration with MCC’s to track and manage the financial performance of restricted funds projects, highlighting key trends, variances, areas of risk and opportunity, including restricted I&E, restricted balance sheet and cash (including negative cash balances) as well as detailed fund code analysis.
• Support the development of high impact initiatives and delivery of restricted projects through the provision of expert commercial finance input through to the project completion.
• Provide functional leadership facilitating meaningful collaboration to the MCC teams by building partnerships and maintaining strong relationships with all departmental senior managers and their MCC teams. 
• Manage financial delivery for the planning and budgeting processes for Christian Aid institutional income working closely with the programme funding team.
• Support country offices with new restricted fund proposal(s), including budget development and final review to ensure that key elements of the proposed budget are included and adhere to the restricted fund policy (e.g. overhead recovery rate, direct cost recovery, cashflow requirements).
• Collaborate with MCC’s and Programme Funding Team in preparing and undertaking external country office donor audits, closing off fund codes, and confirming Partner balances. 
• Coordinate between MCC and the Programme Funding Team, when undertaking a multi-country donor led project, inclusive of the whole project cycle from submission of proposal through to donor audit and final donor report.
• Enable and validate the preparation of all notes relating to institutional donor funds for Christian Aid's statutory accounts.
• Promote the exchange of ideas empowering MCC teams to maximise impact in proposing, justifying, initiating, and implementing change with the ability to listen, interpret, influence, negotiate, inspire and challenge.
