About the role

We have made a number of key appointments to the Board and senior leadership team in the last 12-18 months, including a new Chair and Chief Executive. With some of our longest serving Trustees approaching the end of their terms, we are looking to make further appointments to our Board and committees to bring fresh, external perspective, challenge and leadership.

We are seeking an individual with education experience to join our Board and strengthen the voice of education expertise as we look to the future of our school and the exciting opportunities it presents. This appointment will help ensure our Board has the specialist knowledge needed to support our ‘Outstanding’ school and its continued development.

Who we are looking for

We are interested in hearing from professionals from the education sector who have had senior-level experience and who have a good understanding of SEND, and school organisations and structures. This could be from a variety of different environments and sectors such as schools, multi academy trusts, special schools, local authority and/or central government or regulation. While experience in special education is important, we are primarily seeking someone with a broad education expertise who understands the wider education system. Experience in commissioning or setting up new special academies or MATs would be particularly valuable. We are looking for someone with an understanding and experience of safeguarding, particularly for children with SEND, alongside their broader education expertise.

We are looking for a Trustee who aligns with our mission and is genuinely excited by our work with children with brain injury and neurodisability. You’ll be joining a Board that’s been significantly

refreshed over the past two years. We’re particularly committed to increasing diversity on our Board and would be especially pleased to hear from candidates with lived experience of brain injury, neurodisability, disability or neurodiversity, those from diverse ethnic backgrounds, lower socio-economic backgrounds, or who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ communities.

• Time Commitment

Our board typically meets 6 times a year, including our annual strategy away day, and committees typically meet 4-6 times annually. Outside of the formal meeting schedule, it is likely that additional time will be needed for relationship building and ad hoc discussions with the executive team and fellow board members.

Board meetings take place in person at our Tadworth site in Surrey, and we have a strong preference for in-person attendance to maximise engagement and relationship building, though we maintain some flexibility for online participation in certain circumstances. The Education Committee meets throughout the year, usually in person.

We are keen to recruit a member with operational experience of the church – this could be a minister or a lay person with significant experience of the day to day workings at church, circuit or district level. We are also looking for a member who has IT experience and can assist the committee with issues relating to AI, Cyber Security and Digital.

Working collaboratively with other members of the committee, you will bring your professional skills and experience to bear across the committee’s responsibilities. Not only will you have an understanding of the Church, you will also bring a ‘critical friend’ mindset to scrutinising the accounts and governance framework of the Connexional Council. Role Purpose

Shooting Star Children's Hospices is seeking an experienced and dedicated academic with a strong interest in paediatric palliative care, or related field to join our Research Governance Committee as a Volunteer Academic Member. 

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the strategic development of research at a research active children’s hospice, to ensure that our research activities meet the highest standards of integrity, ethics and governance.

You will work with the Committee Chair, the Research Fellow, and other committee members to support research that makes a meaningful difference to children with life-limiting conditions and their families as well as bereaved families, including those where a child died unexpectedly.

Duties and key responsibilities

• Participate in quarterly meetings: Attend and contribute to online committee meetings held four times per year (papers and slide deck will be prepared by the Chair).

We are seeking two exceptional individuals to strengthen our governance structure at a time of significant opportunity and change.

• Trustee and Chair of Programmes & Partnerships Committee

This role combines membership of our Federation Board with chairing one of our key committees. The Programmes & Partnerships Committee oversees Groundwork UK’s work to increase our visibility and credibility, build national relationships with government, business and charitable funders, and manage programmes that add value to local delivery while directly supporting communities through grants.

This position requires someone who can navigate the complex dynamics of our federated structure while providing strategic oversight of our national income generation, communications and programme management activities.

• Co-opted Finance & Risk Committee Member

This specialised role focuses on the systems and processes that underpin everything we do at Groundwork UK.

We need someone who understands the strategic risks and opportunities associated with data utilisation, digital technology, AI and management information systems, particularly in the context of public sector transformation. This isn’t about developing systems, but about governing them effectively and helping us maximise benefits and minimise risks. The role may develop into full board membership should the individual also wish to join the Federation Board as a Trustee.

Who we are looking for

For the Trustee and Chair of Programmes & Partnerships Committee, we need someone with senior experience in voluntary sector fundraising, income generation, communications or campaigning. You will have worked at a strategic level in a charity or similar organisation, understanding the complexities of building relationships with diverse funders, from government departments to major foundations to corporate partners. Your experience might include developing or overseeing funding strategies, managing stakeholder relationships, overseeing communications campaigns, or leading programme development initiatives.

For the Co-opted Finance & Risk Committee Member position, we are looking for someone with experience of systems management in complex organisational environments, potentially in the public sector or with experience in organisations serving public purposes. You might be someone who has worked in transformation, IT management, service digitisation, AI or similar contexts where systems must serve both internal efficiency needs and external public access requirements.

You don’t need to be a technology specialist, but you should understand the governance challenges that arise. This includes cybersecurity risks, data protection obligations, business continuity planning, and the challenge of making informed decisions about technology investments.

Both roles require individuals who are invested in Groundwork’s mission of creating a fair and green future where people, places and nature thrive. You should be someone who can see the connections between social and environmental challenges and who believes in the power of community-led solutions.

• Time Commitment

Both roles operate on a quarterly meeting cycle, with board meetings and committee meetings alternating throughout the year. For the Trustee and Chair of Programmes & Partnerships Committee, this typically involves attending four Federation Board meetings and four committee meetings annually, plus preparation time and occasional ad hoc consultations. We estimate this at the equivalent of up to a day a month.

For the Co-opted Finance & Risk Committee Member position, the commitment would initially be lighter, focused on quarterly committee meetings with associated preparation. This could grow if you choose to take on board membership and attend the Federation Board meetings which are held quarterly.

The Diocese is seeking three individuals to join its Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC). Each will hold expertise in either building accessibility, architecture or heating systems respectively. 

The main role of a Committee Member is to contribute to DAC meetings, offering professional or lay expertise in matters relating to church buildings, liturgy, or heritage. Committee Members also review and comment on proposals for works submitted by parishes, ensuring a balance between the needs of worship, mission, heritage, and sustainability. Advise is given to parishes during the development of proposals, to ensure projects are viable and align with legal requirements.

Committee Members also participate in site visits where needed to assess proposed works and provide practical advice, often in collaboration with other DAC members, consultants, and statutory bodies (e.g., Historic England, local planning authorities).

Members are to promote good practice in the care and use of churches, encouraging sensitive and appropriate adaptation where necessary, relying on up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance, and church policy (training can/will be provided).

These roles will report into the Chair of the DAC & Diocesan Secretary.

The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) is a membership organisation and charity supporting the profession of planners in the UK. Planners 'make spaces', they work alongside communities, companies and politicians to decide the best way to use land and buildings to shape and develop both urban and rural areas. The RTPI works to raise professional standards, shape planning policy, and awards chartered status for those working in planning.

Finance Committee at the Royal Town Planning Institute plays a pivotal role in the Institute's central governance, overseeing on how the RTPI’s financial assets are being managed and employed for the benefits of its members. The Committee is a mix of members of the RTPI Board of Trustees and independent co-opted members. It reports directly to the Board who then report to the Institute's General Assembly.

The Committee oversees financial management, investments and major projects. We are looking for individuals who can contribute to the Institute's work and decision-making and bring with them experience in reviewing management accounts, budgets and medium to long term financial plans and/or overseeing the management of investments and/or reviewing major project plans and funding requests.

CAFOD Advisor

Strategy Performance Committee (SPC)

Role

Committee member, providing expert fundraising input to this Committee of the Board, alongside Trustees and other advisors. The SPC exercises governance activities on behalf of the Board and provides recommendations to the Board on such governance matters. The remit of the SPC encompasses CAFOD’s programmatic work, covering both CAFOD’s international activities and the work within the Catholic Community in England and Wales.

Person

• Total alignment with goals, ethos and culture of CAFOD, including its Catholic values
• Experience working within the charity sector with knowledge of multiple income streams
• Knowledge of fundraising for international causes would be advantageous
• Experience in multiple income portfolio management, particularly fundraising from the public

Our trustees are the people that have overall oversight of Foothold.  They are not involved in running Foothold on a day-to-day basis as we have a team of staff and volunteers that do this.  However, our board of trustees collectively make decisions about the approach the Foothold will take and its future direction.  They make sure that, as an organisation, we have the policies and procedures we need to ensure we’re complying with our legal obligations.  They provide support, ideas and constructive challenge to our staff team to test our thinking and help Foothold to achieve the best it can for our community members and demonstrate the difference that we make.

Time commitment: We would normally expect trustees to prepare for and take part in 4–5 Board meetings per year. Time commitment

• Four half-day meetings a year, currently two at Romero House, London and two online
• As required, exceptionally, ad hoc meetings and meetings with other committee members, Trustees or staff as required
• No specific term, but expectation of 4 years minimum
