Job description

Reporting to: Communications Manager

Location: One of the Fareshare Depots

Contract: Permanent

Hours: 25 hours/week

Salary: £21,000 per year (£14,000 pro rata)

About FareShare Midlands

FareShare Midlands is the region’s largest food redistribution charity, fighting food poverty and hunger by tackling waste. We source good quality food that is surplus to requirements from retailers and manufacturers. We rely on an army of volunteers to help redistribute this food to 550 frontline charities such as school breakfast clubs, community centres and organisations supporting those who are homeless, unemployed, socially isolated and recovering from addiction. These organisations provide meals and food parcels to more than 35,000 vulnerable people every week.

The Role

We are seeking a self-motivated, enthusiastic and creative Communications Officer to support our Communications Manager in the delivery of a comprehensive communications strategy.

Flexibility and a positive attitude are essential, along with a desire to learn all about marketing in a charity. Great writing and graphic design skills are required, as is an interest/aptitude for photography/videography.  We are looking for a proactive team player to join our friendly team and, if you're dedicated and ambitious, FareShare Midlands is an excellent place to grow your career. 

Main Responsibilities

  • Support the Communications Manager in their delivery of the overall communications strategy
  • Work with the Communications Manager and other teams to develop and implement integrated communications and marketing strategies and fundraising appeals
  • Assist on monitoring progress, impact and success against KPIs


  • Support the Communications Manager with the design, content and production of up-to-date marketing materials across the organisation
  • Assist the team with written content including social media posts, blog posts and regular email updates
  • Create high quality and engaging content for online and print use
  • Develop and manage the database of case studies

Social Media & Website

  • Create and schedule a variety of content across all platforms in line with the Social Media Plan (written, graphic design, photos and video)
  • Develop a variety of fresh and relevant content to keep the charity’s website up-to-date
  • Research trends and opportunities and help to improve our social media presence, followers and engagement
  • Assist on monitoring engagement, analysing performance and reporting on channel effectiveness

PR, Public Affairs and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Support the Communications Manager with the circulation and promotion of press releases
  • Assist the Communications Manager with the development and implementation of the public affairs strategy including greater emphasis on media ops
  • Help with tracking and reporting on media coverage and stakeholder engagement


  • Assist with the delivery of internal communications, including the monthly newsletter
  • Develop and manage the email marketing database
  • Work effectively with staff and volunteers, in particular members of the fundraising team
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties to support the operations of the charity

Person Specification

Essential Experience

  • 12 months’ experience (work or volunteering) in communications, marketing, fundraising or relationship-building
  • Experience in creating content including digital
  • Strong skills in content writing and graphic design
  • A familiarity with the best practices of social media and common platforms
  • Ability to work on own initiative and to meet objectives and deadlines

Personal Qualities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to form good working relations, both internally and externally
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage time, prioritise and plan effectively
  • Creative thinker
  • An interest in and commitment to FareShare’s mission and core values


  • Bachelor's degree in a field such as communications, marketing or journalism
  • Experience in managing communications campaigns
  • Experience gained in a charity or social enterprise
  • Photography skills
  • Videography skills
