What is a Serving Community Team Volunteering Coordinator?

There is a SSAFA presence throughout the serving community, both in the UK and overseas. In many areas, SSAFA have Serving Community Teams which offer financial, practical, and emotional support to serving personnel and their families. Each team is formed of a group of trained volunteers who make this possible.

A Volunteering Coordinator is a key role within the Team, supporting with local recruitment, induction, and celebration of volunteers and volunteering. They ensure volunteers are welcomed and supported. This role also has voting rights for the grant giving process.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of SSAFA. We have been involving volunteers in supporting the Armed Forces community for more than 130 years. Our beneficiaries come from all backgrounds and age groups and the number of people contacting us for help rises each year. To continue providing help when it’s needed most, SSAFA must maintain a diverse and committed network of volunteers who are skilled, supported and valued.

What will you be doing?

Although every SSAFA Serving Community Team has different needs, below are the main activities of a Volunteering Coordinator:

• Keeping track and keeping in touch: Maintaining accurate and up-to-date lists of volunteer details, ensuring volunteers complete training, checking in with volunteers about their experience and passing on feedback.
• Monitoring and planning: Working alongside the Chair to monitor volunteer numbers and develop plans to recruit new volunteers as required.
• Creating local links: Taking opportunities to advertise and promote volunteering opportunities locally, including linking with local volunteer centres and community groups. Liaising with the Engagement and Events Coordinator and SSAFA’s Marketing and Communications team for support with branding and publicity materials.
• Welcoming and supporting: Working in partnership with SSAFA Central Office teams to coordinate local volunteer recruitment and induction, supporting new volunteers through these steps. Ensuring every volunteer has access to supervision and support, signposting to support from SSAFA Central Office teams as required.
• Celebrating and saying thank you: Seeking opportunities to celebrate volunteering, engaging in local initiatives and finding ways to say thank you to volunteers for all their efforts.
• Partnership working: building positive relationships and working together with national and regional employees, who are available to offer you support.
• Being a volunteering champion: working with the Regional Operations Support Manager to promote volunteering best practice across the Team and ensure volunteers have the best possible experience with SSAFA.

We work to make SSAFA as safe as possible for everyone. Part of this involves volunteers attending an informal interview, providing two suitable references, and completing relevant training for your role.

The Operations Assistant supports the Chair with all administration to enable Hidayah to function smoothly. Responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:

• Providing administrative support to the Chair including scheduling meetings, managing calendars and responding to emails
• Creating process flows to enable service delivery and monitor progress
• Preparing meeting agendas, taking notes and sharing meeting minutes
• Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records and databases including documents on the Google Drive
• Aiding in the planning and execution of all operational projects and initiatives
• Preparing reports, presentations, and documentation as needed e.g., for annual reports
• Responding to inquiries and providing information to internal and external stakeholders
• Performing other duties and tasks as assigned by the Chair

How much time is required?

We are flexible around your schedule but we anticipate that the role will require around 4 hours per week. The following commitments are in place for all Hidayah volunteers:

• Aim to attend all relevant meetings, delivering a comprehensive report with updates and to complete actions as and when they appear
• Aim to attend all other planning meetings as necessary
• Attend Hidayah events (where geographically possible)
• Help to fundraise for, and advertise, any Hidayah events and fundraising drives
• Add to and maintain the administration of our file sharing system ‘Google Drive’ to ensure it’s up to date with clear records, templates and forms
• Check and respond to emails in a timely manner
• Contribute to the communications group (via Discord) and stay up to date with Hidayah developments
• Provide information, statements and data for the annual report
• Keep up to date with Hidayah communication and organisational developments

This role is subject to a 6 months probationary period with a 2 month notice period should you wish to resign.

At WWT, we create and conserve wetlands and save species. We bring awe-inspiring nature up close and let it do the talking. We help people to feel part of something amazing and motivate them to make a difference. In this role you will be visiting your local WWT wetland centre on a weekly basis to film wildlife spectacles and species for inclusion in a weekly wildlife update that goes out to our members and supporters.

What will you be doing

• Capturing footage of the centre, its wildlife, wetland landscapes, events and people on a regular basis (depending on skill level).

• Receiving direction from the Marketing and Communications Manager on requirements for specific pieces of footage according to the themes for each week, as well as taking ad hoc footage as great opportunities arise

• Working proactively with the WWT Washington team to identify key events and sightings that would make engaging content

About the Role

We are looking for a Volunteer to assist in the running of the daily programme of activities at Headway East London. The Day Service is a new opportunity for people living with brain injury in the East London area to join our community. 

Volunteering with us, you’ll get involved in the fun and creative activities going on at our Day Service. Every week is different: you could help in our art studio, assist in the kitchen or take part in a music session. You’ll be supporting our members one-to-one and in groups. You don’t need any special skills or knowledge, we’ll give you the induction you need, and support is always on hand, with regular volunteer meetings, training sessions and supervision.

Main Duties

• To help Headway staff manage the activity programme for each member by offering one-to-one support or in small groups.
• To assist members with specific activities that prove challenging for them i.e., using computers, cooking, engaging in art activities.
• To initiate discussion, games or activities and encourage members to take part.
• To help floor staff around lunch time (food preps. setting up tables, dishing out and serving food).
• To assist with keeping the Headway centre safe, clean, and tidy all times by taking on tasks such as collecting and washing cups, tidying up resources' shelves, wiping tables before lunch etc…
• To inform floor staff about activities undertaken with members and any significant changes in mood or behaviour. To take members to social events and outings and being able to assist individuals needing to use a wheelchair.

Prison-based volunteers are the backbone of Fine Cell Work (FCW). Supported by the Fine Cell Work programmes team and by other staff at the FCW office, they teach and administer FCW stitching groups in prisons.

Prison volunteers work in teams to organise classes and teach our stitchers, as well as providing groups information to the prison and to the FCW office. The precise mix of skills will vary from prison to prison.

Volunteering in prison for Fine Cell Work requires ideally a good level of needlework skill (or a willingness to learn), some teaching experience and/or experience of working with socially-excluded groups. Volunteers must be patient and non-judgemental in order to work effectively.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The role of the Volunteer Barber is an important one to the charity as part of our confidence-building and resettlement efforts.

The role will suit someone who is a trainee or qualified barber or hairdresser, who can commit to 6 hours per month at our Health and Wellbeing days across South West London.

The volunteer will be mindful of how much a new appearance can increase the self-esteem of someone who is experiencing homelessness or is being resettled by SPEAR. They will enjoy developing positive relationships with new people and will be willing to work outside of their own comfort zone providing haircuts at no charge to SPEAR clients.

LOCATION/S: Our Health and Wellbeing days are held across Richmond, Kingston, Wandsworth, Merton and Sutton Boroughs. We hold approximately one Health and Well-being day per month in one of the above locations.

A Fundraising Volunteer is a crucial role in the team, helping the Fundraising Coordinator deliver a range of activities and events to raise awareness of SSAFA and generate funds. You will spend time out and about supporting initiatives such as fayres, street collections, quizzes, raffles and other promotional events.

Hestia provides mental health support across 17 London boroughs and in Kent. Last year, Hestia supported more than 6,000 people across our mental health services.

Would you be interested in supporting vulnerable adults to improve their English skills? We are looking for a volunteer who can support with English learning online. English is a wonderful language, but it is also notoriously difficult to learn.

What you will be doing
Agree a mutually convenient time and frequency for weekly online tutoring sessions for the client.
Determine learning priorities alongside the client.
Prepare simple online lessons to help improve the client’s English (speaking, listening, reading and writing).
Possibly provide “homework” activities to be complete between lessons (if desired by the client
Provide an encouraging and supportive learning environment.
To keep records of conversations and update the client’s support worker on progress of sessions.

Supporting You - You will have a dedicated volunteer supervisor to

 support you in your role; Quarterly volunteer forums with the central Volunteering team and volunteers across Hestia; References for job applications.
Developing You - You will gain knowledge and insight into issues that impact Domestic Abuse, Modern Slavery and Mental Health; You will have access to our extensive Learning and Development Programme; 40% of our departed volunteers secured a paid role at Hestia last year!
Valuing You - Valuing You - We hold annual Volunteer Awards, outings, celebration, and social events for our volunteers to get together and have some fun; We reimburse travel expenses and up to £5 for lunch for your Volunteering.

This position is open to anyone interested in Friends of the Earth and its local campaigns in the borough of Camden. We are looking for someone to support our campaigns.

Duties

Most common duties:

• Partnering with other local groups in Camden.

• Building local support though online petitions, leafleting in our event etc.

• Engaging with our local politicians.

• Mobilizing at key moments with groups and organizations across the country e.g. Days of Action.

• Working with our social media manager to promote the campaign.

• Including in our monthly newsletter any updates on the campaign.

Person specification

Essential:

• Min 18 years old.

• Strong commitment or interest in environmental issues.

• Own or have access to a laptop and/or smartphone.

Desirable

• Strong personal and communication skills.

• Good organization skills and a  collaborative mindset.

• Previous experience in events or related roles is advantageous
