Who are we?
Switchboard LGBTQIA+ exists to provide members of the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as their friends, family and those supporting them, with a listening service that they can contact via phone, instant message and email between the hours of 10am to 10pm every day.
We are happy to talk to service users about any topic they wish. Topics we often talk to service users about include: sexual health, safer sex, relationships, coming-out, gender identity, transitioning, mental health, experiences of hate crimes, support for meeting other LGBTQIA+ people and making friends, and much more.
However, we want to also be upfront and transparent about the fact that not all of our conversations are positive or constructive. Our volunteers can also be exposed to abuse from the public, manipulative callers, sexual fantasies and safeguarding concerns.
What is our over 50's club?
Our over 50's club is a new initiative for Switchboard.
We want to create a space that enables older members of the LGBTQIA+ community to volunteer with us on our phone lines and instant messaging service, whilst providing a social element that encourages volunteers to come together at our London HQ.
This club will meet on both Mondays and Tuesdays during the day (you can choose which day works better for you), completing a shift either between 10am to 1pm or 2:00pm to 5:00pm. You can join us weekly or bi-weekly, whichever you prefer.
We then come together between 1pm and 2:00pm to have lunch (paid for by us) and a good natter!
Volunteers who support Switchboard in this capacity are trained to take both phone calls and respond to instant messages. They do not respond to emails, however.
Who are we looking for?
To ensure we can provide a high quality service to those who contact us, we are looking for volunteers who:

Simply put, like communicating and chatting with other people (you’re most likely a people-person who feels energised by this type of communication)

Feel comfortable taking calls and speaking over the phone to people you do not already know

Are familiar with different instant messaging platforms (such as WhatsApp and other chat tools) and the types of communication they might receive

Are able to read between the lines to decipher messages

Are good listeners who let others lead conversations and instead create the space they need

Are able to ask broad, open questions to keep conversations flowing

Understand the importance of using the right tone when communicating in writing, and are able to flex their writing style to suit different people

We have the opportunity for volunteers who have a passion for retail and animals to join the team at our brand new charity shop on George Street in the city centre. The George Street shop is our retail hub as it is also home to our E-Commerce operation. Role Profile
Our shop volunteers play an integral role in the day-to-day running of our charity shops and the maximising of sales to support Bath Cats & Dogs Home. Whether you prefer working behind the scenes or on the shop floor in a customer facing role there are plenty of tasks to get involved with.
Your activities could include:
- Assisting and serving customers on the till
- Providing excellent customer service on the shop floor
- Creating attractive displays and assisting with the visual merchandising of the shop
- Receiving donations from the public and promoting our Gift Aid scheme
- Assisting with the processing of donated stock, including sorting, steaming and hanging of items
- Other daily tasks including cleaning, tidying, dusting and hoovering
About You
You will be a motivated and enthusiastic individual with a love for animals. Good communication and customer care skills are key to a successful charity shop so the ability to work as part of a team and with the general public is desirable. There is a manual handling element to the role so this should be considered on application. The hours are flexible although we ask for a regular commitment of a few hours each week.
Full in person training will be provided for donation sorting and retail guidelines, as well as our waste management and recycling processes.
Through advice and support in the community, to rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming at our centre, we positively transform the lives of pets.

Trustee/Fundraiser vacancy
The Role
Our community library is looking for a proactive Trustee who will lead on fundraising in tandem with our volunteer fundraising team to identify event opportunities and move them to successful completion. The successful fundraiser will also help to develop corporate sponsorship, legacy giving and individual donations to support our small charity . The skills we would appreciate are abilities to:
· Bring ideas for new and resourceful fundraising activities;
· Manage fundraising events with our volunteer fundraising team from forecasting through to conclusion;
· Research local corporate and individual sponsorship and partnerships and communicate effectively with them;
· Maintain a simple fundraising database;
· Assist in marketing our events, creating posts for social media and email marketing, possible digital fundraising and sponsored events;
· Communicate with our small team of fellow-Trustees to help us move forward and shape our strategy.
The attributes we hope that you, as a volunteer, will bring include:

As a volunteer Charity Shop Assistant, you would join a small team working with the shop managers and other volunteers to help make it a success and raise vital funds for animal welfare.

Our shops sell a mixture of donated items, including clothes & accessories, books, bric-a-brac, electricals and collectables.

Volunteer Charity Shop Assistant responsibilities
- Helping customers in the shop find what they need.

- Processing sales through the till and card machine, including Gift Aid.

RNIB has been invited to create a show garden for the RHS at their new venue for 2025, the RHS Flower Show at Wentworth Woodhouse near Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The garden is supported by Players of the People’s Postcode Lottery and we’re working with an internationally known garden designer, Paul Hervey-Brookes, an RHS judge to create an accessible, sensory space that celebrates the incredible impact of gifts in Wills. Gifts in Wills are a very special way of giving and account for more than a third of RNIB’s annual income.
We’re looking for volunteers who live in or close to Rotherham, South Yorkshire who have excellent communication skills, lots of enthusiasm and who enjoy talking to people about the work of RNIB. An interest in gardening would be advantageous but not essential.
The event is taking place from 16 until 20 July 2025 and volunteers are needed for a day or more at Wentworth Woodhouse near Rotherham. The days will be busy and varied and could include:
• talking to members of the public
• handing out merchandise
• helping supporters in the garden
How you will be supported in your role:

The Northern Devon Branch are in need of new committee members and specifically a Branch Secretary.
The committee plan and coordinate various activities for people affected by Parkinson's across a wide area of North Devon. Activities range from exercise to social get togethers, coffee mornings and trips.
Committee members are expected to try and attend monthly meetings in the Bideford area and to contribute to group discussion and decision making.
The secretary role entails communicating details of planned activities with our members via email or post and providing communication and admin support to the Chair of the branch. Other committee members manage the newsletter, memberships, social media and meeting agenda and minutes so this is not an extensive role but it is important and keeps members up to date with activities and any notices.

Would you like to volunteer in a customer facing role at RNIB's Products for Life Store in London? Could you be the welcoming face of RNIB? Do you have good communication skills and enjoy meeting and helping people? We need friendly, enthusiastic people like you to give visitors to our Products for Life Store the best possible experience when they come to us for information about our products and services or general enquiries. Products for Life Store consultations are a great way of customers finding out about the products that RNIB offers, and give customers the chance to try and view products.
The role involves welcoming customers and assisting customers to view and try products before they buy, recording purchases on the till (training will be provided) and some admin tasks such as using excel, checking stock lists and processing payments.
We are looking for volunteers with a welcoming and friendly nature, who enjoy interacting with customers and have some experience of Microsoft Office and Excel.
The Products for Life Store is a friendly and supportive team and ideally, you will have some flexibility to fit in with the needs of the Products for Life Store.
