Age UK East London are recruiting a Community Engagement Officer to join our growing Community Outreach team. We support hundreds of people a year to maintain their health and wellbeing, combat social isolation and digital inclusion through the varied activities and by signposting to relative local support services. 

We support some of the most deprived communities in the UK, tackling poverty and health inequality while promoting independence and well-being. 

Working in well networked and integrated systems you will make a key contribution to improving the lives of adults, their carers and the wider community. 

Job description 

Job Purpose 

• To provide a high-quality outreach support service that enables older adults with low level support needs to live independently within the community. 

• To a promote network services across the Boroughs to maximise their take-up. 

• To work closely with statutory and voluntary sector agencies to ensure appropriate services are accessed. 

• To ensure that service users have maximum choice and control over the planning and management of the service they receive, including initiating individual support plans and connecting them with culturally appropriate services. 

Key Tasks 

• To signpost people to appropriate services as required through outreach sessions in the Hub, Satellite centres, GP practices and pharmacies. 

• To develop shared working practices across the service network. 

• To work closely with providers of similar services 

• To work to agreed individual, team, and organisational objectives. 

• To work with existing activity groups at the hub and satellite centres and support the setting up of activities where appropriate. 

• To ensure all contacts with service users are recorded appropriately and to maintain an adequate filing system. 

• To use word-processing software to produce own correspondence and reports in accordance with relevant policy on confidentiality and data protection. 

• To collect monitoring information to enable the service to be evaluated. 

• To provide support to services outside of normal working hours and occasionally attend sessions when required. 

Administration  

• To ensure all relevant administration is organised and efficiently completed. 

• To assist co-ordinating service user client surveys/questionnaires as appropriate, collate feedback and evaluate the service provided. 

• To assist with the collection of data necessary to provide specific information needed for KPI’s and external requirements and outcomes. 

• To ensure all data is collected through AUKEL organisational customer relationship management data base systems. 

Quality 

• To be familiar with and to implement Age UK East London’s policies and procedures. 

• Ensure that confidential data is managed within AGE UK’s policies and procedures.

 General 

• To meet regularly with line manager for support, supervision, and appraisal. 

• To attend team and staff meetings, (and other meetings) as required. 

• To undertake any other duties within the competence of the post holder as may be required from time to time for the continued smooth running of Age UK East London.

The Upper Room (TUR) works with a wide range of financially and socially disadvantaged groups including homeless people, people with long-term mental health conditions, asylum-seekers, refugees and ex-offenders – helping them to improve their lives and become productive members of society. Central to our offering is our UR4Meals service, providing free, home-cooked food to people who cannot afford to provide for themselves. We are also very proud of our UR4Driving programme, which supports people recently out of prison with free driving lessons in exchange for community volunteering. Gaining a driving licence greatly enhances their future employability prospects and helps break the cycle of re-offending. Additionally, our UR4Jobs project focusses on both client wellbeing and breaking down the many barriers to employment faced by disadvantaged people every day.

The role

Is an exciting new edition to the TUR team, created to capitalise on the fact that the number of businesses in our catchment area is 45000+, but we’re not trying to talk to all of them, just target a few – ideally by gaining referrals and recommendations. So the job is to proactively find those local businesses happy to talk to us, understand what they might be looking for by partnering with a charity, share our brilliant story along with the business case (which is strong) for them to get involved with us in some way. We have made an excellent start, we already have a small number of great corporate partners, and this job is about taking it all on to the next level. As you would expect the role is about creating contacts, networking, maximising the face-to-face time with prospective partners and where possible gaining referrals. And, ultimately this is all because, the bigger our portfolio of corporate partners all feeling great about their involvement with us, the more able we are to raise the funds we need to keep up with an ever-increasing demand for our services.

About You

You live within - or know well, West/Central London, you probably need a job with some working flexibility and want to have genuine belief in the product or service you’re talking about. You have a CV that demonstrates solid experience in a comparable role in a ‘business-to-business’ environment, a role - the success of which, is dependent on the levels of energy and proactivity you provide. This could be in another charity, CIC or other Non-Profit organisation. However, if you have a solid B2B background and want to explore a change of direction you are also very welcome to apply. You are comfortable and confident with working autonomously, you can articulate and ‘bring to life’ your story through your presentation skills. The Programme Manager will deliver a personal development journey to young people using snowsports as the hook to engage those who are less likely to engage with mainstream provision. We are a small and agile campaigning organisation on a mission to rescue Britain’s rivers from a toxic cocktail of agricultural, sewage and industrial pollution. We support community action, galvanise and mobilise public opinion, influence government policy, and call out destructive industrial practices to incentivise changes that end pollution.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for highly engaged people who share our passion for rivers, wildlife and people who bring a creative, collaborative and investigative approach to campaigning. For this role we are looking for a confident and resilient community organiser who can build strong relationships to support communities to create change locally.

What you’ll be doing:

The Communities Coordinator will support community groups to campaign for clean rivers at a local level. By facilitating grass roots action you’ll be galvanising a strong and powerful network of community activists that have the power to create change both locally and nationally. You’ll be responsible for taking River Action’s national campaign strategy to a local level. You’ll work closely with the Campaigns Manager and the wider team to develop a Community Toolkit (including advice for activists, and guidance and services for communications, fundraising, legal support and citizen science projects) to support communities as well as provide strategic support to empower community activists to campaign for clean rivers. You’ll work closely with the Campaigns Manager and wider team to amplify the stories of those taking action at a local level and connect campaign groups to the wider national agenda. You’ll be working collaboratively with the River Action team to devise, develop and deliver our strategy ensuring our programme of community engagement is equitable, diverse and inclusive. You’ll be working closely with other organisations to ensure our community support compliments the work of others and meets the needs of community groups we work with. 

Main Duties 

• Contribute to the development and implementation of River Action’s campaign strategy.

• Develop River Action’s Community Toolkit as a package of support for local campaign groups. 

• Identify community groups within river catchments areas River Action is working and build positive and impactful relationships..

• Organise site visits to develop good relationships and in-depth understanding of local issues impacting river health.

• Convene and align local stakeholders around river catchment and regional campaigns.

• Facilitate local community groups’ campaigns and provide support in line with our toolkit’s support package.

• Facilitate the creation of community group citizen science projects, integrated within a national system for gathering and sharing evidence of pollution.

• Organise community crowdfunding for citizen science and communications.

• Plan and host webinars, training sessions and online and in person events.

• Develop good working relationships with regulators including Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales and Scottish Environment and Protection Agency. 

• Support the CEO and Campaigns Manager to identify and deliver legal challenges at a local level.

• Maintain and develop partnerships and working relationships with other key groups and stakeholders working in similar areas of work to River Action.

• Identify opportunities to engage, empower and expand River Action’s network of supporters. 

• Support the Communications Coordinator to create inspiring and engaging digital media content and news stories, including taking photographs and videos and conducting interviews.

• Support the Campaigns Manager and Communication Coordinator in responding to the reactive news agenda.

• Contribute to the Monitoring and Evaluation system for demonstrating impact of River Action’s community engagement work, reporting against KPIs. 

• Contribute to fundraising efforts particularly crowdfunding and drafting of funding proposals to support Campaigns and Fundraising Teams and the charity’s mission.

Written Submission:

This year, River Action will be developing its Communities Toolkit aimed at local campaign groups and activists seeking to develop their own local campaigns to rescue their rivers locally. As part of your application, we would like you to put together a one page document outlining a plan for the toolkit, mapping out the main structure and content of the toolkit and how you would deliver it to communities. We will particularly be looking at your style of communication and creative skills. Should you be successful in being invited to interview, you may be asked to present this idea.

Closing Date: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until 23:00 Friday 24 May. Screening calls and first-round interviews may be conducted with short-listed candidates before the application deadline. The deadline may be closed early if the right candidate is found.

Through your engagement with the school community, you will feed into a network of connectors, sharing important learnings & good practice.

Leaders in Community (LiC) is an award-winning youth-led organisation with over 15 years' experience in delivering youth leadership and youth social action campaigns, supporting local young people challenge and overcome inequalities and barriers to progression.

As the Partnerships and Services Manager, you will report directly to the CEO and as such will be a member of the leadership team, to deliver Leaders in Community’s (LiC) work to empower young people and communities to improve quality of life and build a sustainable future in line with the Charity’s vision and mission.
