What your role will involve

There are a variety of tasks that you can get involved with in the shop, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience

• Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated goods for sale
• Creating eye catching window and in-shop displays
• Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised

This is an exciting opportunity to delve into the world of social media, using social media platforms to enhance the online presence of Shelter Birmingham. You’ll be providing information, promoting our services, and increasing engagement with local and national campaigns. This role gives you the chance to volunteer across diverse and friendly teams, gain valuable experience in online communications, and put your own creative stamp onto projects. 

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to develop skills and experience within social media and who has an interest in social welfare. This may include personal experience of bad housing or homelessness which will enrich your knowledge, empathy, and authenticity within the role.

Location: This a flexible role, that can be undertaken from home or the office at times to suit you. During planned events, we may need a visible presence, but this will be arranged in advance.

A home is a fundamental human right, as vital as education or healthcare. But in Britain today, that right is denied to millions of people whose lives are blighted by homelessness, unsuitable housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. The time for change is now. Together with individuals, in communities and across society, we will lead the way for a safe home for all. But we need your help to do it. 

Main Tasks can include: 

• Establishing and/or maintaining active social media accounts.

• Researching and creating creative content for different social media channels, starting with Twitter and Instagram, with view to expansion (you will have the opportunity to shape the role as you develop). 

• Helping to develop social media communication plans for sharing information that can help and support the local community.

• Liaising with the team in the Birmingham hub including to plan and promote national and local Shelter campaigns. 

• Identifying current news and issues affecting people locally around housing and benefits 

• Identifying target audiences and being up to date with current trends. 

• Attending events organised by Shelter Birmingham to provide updates on social media and making reels for Instagram going live on our Instagram account during live events.

• Be familiar with some of the social media platforms and if needed learn how to use others use of various social media platforms including Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Tik Tok and Instagram.

We're a not for profit Community Energy organisation operating in Southwark and Lambeth and has been established by members of the South London community to relieve fuel poverty by providing renewable energy locally. We have been set up as a Community Benefit Society, which means we are a business managed for the benefit of the community. It’s is run by its shareholders, and shareholding is open to everyone.

We were established in 2023 and received grants from four funds (Government, Mayor of London, Southwark Council, Centrica Energy for Tomorrow) and a fuel poverty alleviation contract from Uk Power Networks (Leaving No One Behind) in 2024 to set up our pilot projects. We have two part time paid managers running the fuel poverty activity and the overall programme.

Our pilot projects include a fuel poverty service delivering energy advice and support for those in need and we currently have five trained energy champions who work with us part-time. We are also running feasibility studies for four solar arrays on housing estates and we’re exploring different possible business models. If we can make this work then we will be setting a precedent for a model for renewables on mixed tenure estates and long term financial sustainable fuel poverty alleviation.

At this exciting and pivotal time at the beginning of our journey we are looking for a Treasurer to support our organisation by overseeing the financial affairs.

The Role

The Treasurer will be overseeing the work of Martin, our dedicated Lead Finance Volunteer, who is an accountant working in Government and has been supporting our work for several months. We estimate that the treasurer role will require an average of less than one day a month, including attendance at six board meetings a year and weekly half hour meetings as necessary to be a mentor to Martin. We hold board meetings every other month on Tuesdays 1-2.30pm. The majority of these are held online with occasional in person meetings in Southwark. The Treasurer will also be responsible for holding a general oversight of financial activities and ensuring that we are keeping in line with our financial responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Oversee financial matters to ensure that the organisation is compliant with regulations and good practice
• Support the finance team and other members of the board to ensure that effective financial procedures are in place
• Support the team in maintaining accurate financial records and oversee the year-end and funders financial reporting processes
• Advise on finance related initiatives that could benefit the society and input to strategy
• Support the creation of financial prospectuses for community share offers

Essential Qualities, Skills and Experience

• Chartered accountant with at least three years experience
• Understanding of financial management in organisations
• Ability to communicate financial information in a clear and effective manner
• Interest in renewables, sustainability and Community Energy
• Willingness and ability to work as part of a team and build good relationships

Africa Sustainable Journeys

ASJ is a purpose-driven social enterprise offering immersive, ethical travel experiences in Uganda and Rwanda. Founded after a life-changing encounter with the Batwa community in Bwindi forest, our mission is to empower local people, preserve cultural heritage, and promote conservation through sustainable tourism.

Environmental Challenges

Climate change poses a significant threat to the ecosystems of Uganda and Rwanda. Rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events are altering the delicate balance of the region's ecosystems. This, in turn, disrupts wildlife habitats, impacts local communities, and threatens the regions' rich biodiversity. For instance, changing weather patterns are affecting the migratory patterns of animals, leading to increased human-wildlife conflict and wildlife distinction.

Conservation efforts in Uganda and Rwanda are also facing significant challenges. Habitat destruction, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict are major threats to the regions' endangered species, including mountain gorillas, elephants, and lions. The destruction of habitats is largely driven by agricultural expansion, urbanization, and infrastructure development, which have resulted in widespread deforestation and land degradation. This not only threatens biodiversity but also leads to soil erosion, loss of fertile land, and decreased agricultural productivity.

Waste management and pollution are additional environmental concerns facing Uganda and Rwanda. The rapid growth of urban centers has led to an increase in plastic waste, agricultural runoff, and other pollutants, which contaminate water sources, soil, and air. This poses significant health risks to local communities, who rely heavily on natural resources for their livelihoods. Furthermore, the lack of effective waste management systems and pollution controls threatens the regions' natural beauty and biodiversity.

Social Challenges Poverty and economic inequality are pervasive in Uganda and Rwanda, particularly in rural areas. Limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities perpetuate poverty and inequality, creating a cycle of disadvantage that is difficult to break. Many communities lack access to basic services, such as clean water, sanitation, and electricity, which exacerbates poverty and inequality. Furthermore, the lack of economic opportunities and limited access to markets and resources hinder the ability of local communities to improve their livelihoods.

Cultural exploitation is another significant social challenge facing Uganda and Rwanda. The commercialization of cultural heritage and traditions can lead to cultural erosion, exploitation, and loss of cultural identity. The tourism industry, in particular, can perpetuate cultural exploitation, as local communities are often pressured to perform cultural rituals and practices for tourists, leading to the commodification of culture. This can result in the loss of cultural significance and meaning, as well as the exploitation of local communities for economic gain.

Displacement of local communities is a further social challenge facing Uganda and Rwanda. Unregulated tourism development can result in the displacement of local communities, loss of land, and cultural heritage. The construction of tourist infrastructure, such as hotels and lodges, can lead to the displacement of local communities, as their land is taken over for development. This can result in the loss of livelihoods, cultural heritage, and community cohesion.

To address the social and environmental challenges in Uganda and Rwanda, we've established a policy framework guiding our project development. Our "Choose Your Impact" initiative allocates 2% of tour proceeds to local community projects, 1% to Sustainable Travel International's Climate Impact Portfolio for carbon offsetting, and 1% to local conservation initiatives.

Our projects tackle specific social and environmental challenges. Through our partnership with St. Kizito Junior Academy, our Rural Education Support Program bridges the educational gap for vulnerable children in rural Uganda. Where we are committed to improving infrastructure, provide essential resources, and support the school's efforts to deliver quality education, empowering disadvantaged children in Mpigi district, Njjanya village.

We also empower teenage mothers in the Rwenzori region through our partnership with Platform for the Needy, providing them with skills training, education, and economic empowerment. This support enables them to improve their socio-economic status, overcome marginalization, and participate fully in their communities.

In partnership with Ride 4 a Woman and Azizi Life, we promote community-based tourism, enabling guests to engage in cultural exchange programs and homestays. This approach injects income into local economies, supports local people, and fosters cross-cultural understanding.

Environmentally, we promote sustainable wildlife tourism practices, support conservation efforts, and protect wildlife habitats. We invest in sustainable infrastructure, implement environmentally friendly practices, reduce waste and carbon emissions, and support reforestation and climate action initiatives.

Our social responsibility commitment extends to addressing inequality and social exclusion among the indigenous Batwa community in Uganda. Our Batwa Healthcare Support project provides comprehensive medical care, health education, and community outreach. We also partner with Guardian Gorilla Village on the Goats for Gorillas project, supporting sustainable livelihood solutions for reformed poachers' families and reducing threats to gorillas and wildlife.

Every child deserves the chance to succeed, regardless of their background. Action Tutoring is a charity dedicated to closing the attainment gap and creating a more equitable future for young people.

We're building a diverse community of tutors passionate about educational equity. We are seeking dedicated volunteers from all walks of life to tutor and support pupils facing socio-economic disadvantage in maths and English.

As a volunteer tutor, you’ll:

• Tutor a group of 1-3 pupils (primary or secondary), with options to support online or in-person.

• Dedicate just one hour a week for a 10-20 week programme.

We provide the resources - you bring your enthusiasm! You’ll use our workbooks to deliver your sessions.

Our charity delivers a range of awareness campaigns and support services to patients, relatives, partners and carers who have been affected by a poorly understood pain condition; Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). We are looking for 2 experienced social media and communications volunteers who are able to develop posts and campaigns from design to inception, create fresh and engaging content, increase engagement and to increase awareness of the charity and of the condition we represent.

Even though we are a small organisation we have big ideas and would like to draw on your experience in the communications world to help the charity deliver engaging content and communications to help us spread our aims and message to all our audience.

What Will You Be Doing?

• Engagement: Help increase engagement, improve the number of followers/likes, create & execute a content calendar
• Content Creation: Produce fresh, branded and engaging content for our social media channels 
• Graphics: Prepare graphics and text for sharing across channels

• Building trust and companionship with a client through correspondence. Omega befriends a variety of people including: caregivers, the lonely, isolated or people with ill-health.

Chatterbox Befrienders offer one-to-one telephone support and will call a client once a week offering companionship and a listening ear for an individual who might otherwise go unheard. Chatterbox volunteers befriend a variety of people including carers, socially isolated individuals who are struggling with loneliness, people with ill health and those that have been bereaved.

This role could be for you, if you:

• Calling your client once a week for a chat of up to 45 minutes; this is a 26 week initial commitment, at the end of which each client’s needs are reviewed

• Ensuring immediate contact with the Chatterbox Coordinators if you feel that the client might be a risk to themselves or others

The event held in the hospice gardens is to welcome the local community into Acorns.
There will be entertainment, stalls and activities 11am – 3pm. Food and refreshments are available. Volunteers are welcome to invite along their family & friends.

How much time will it take?

• 10am – 3.30pm either for the whole event or a few hours
• Parking will be available nearby for volunteers
• All volunteers will receive hot drinks free of charge.

We are looking for our new Co-Chair of Trustees. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about creating a culture of welcome in the UK for refugees ,who believes in the power of young people as changemakers and who wants to empower refugees to reach higher education to join our board of trustees. 

 The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the governance of a charity or public sector organisation and be able to commit to at least 2 years in the role.

• Have lived experience 
• Have HR experience 
• Have campaigns experience, in particular hybrid campaigning.
• Have charitable fundraising experience.

Role Description

To provide strategic oversight of:

• STAR’s compliance with its Articles of Association, policies, and law; 
• STAR’s compliance with all funding conditions and contracts;
• Whether STAR is best using its resources to meet its objectives; 
• The effective and efficient administration of STAR;
• Monitoring and reporting of financial information; 
• STAR’s funding and expenditure situation; and
• Implementation of STAR’s Equal Opportunities Policy and Safeguarding Policy in employment and service delivery.

Also to:

• Contribute actively to STAR by giving strategic direction and evaluating performance against targets
• Attend and prepare for board meetings
• Appoint board members and officers via the procedures in this policy
• Approve accounts
• Ensure that STAR and the board safeguard STAR’s values and reputation
• Provide any other assistance the board or STAR may require, as appropriate, particularly utilising any specialist skills or experience they may have.

Specific responsibilities of the Co- Chair

• Ensure the proper management of board meetings, including setting agendas in consultation with the Director, chairing meetings, facilitating discussions and decision;
• Oversee the administration and coordination of any sub-committees; 
• Monitor implementation of board and sub-committee decisions;
• Take "Chair’s action" between meetings, where an immediate decision is required;
• Serve as line-manager to the Director, and conduct regular planned supervision and appraisal;
• Represent Board as required to the public or external parties such as funders and government; and
• Keep other officers fully informed so that they can deputise if necessary
• Working alongside and in collaboration with the other STAR trustee co-chair, sharing responsibilities and ensuring excellent communicative shared working.

Person Specification 

Essential 

• Experience of governance of a charity or public sector organisation
• A commitment to STAR’s values
• An awareness of issues affecting both STAR and the wider refugee sector, the ever shifting landscape of refugee policy and media coverage, or a willingness to learn and stay abreast of these current topics and new developments. 
• A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to prepare for and attend regular STAR meetings for at least 2 years
• Integrity and good independent judgement
• Strategic vision and an ability to stay focused on strategic objectives
• Willingness to take part in STAR discussions, contribute constructively and listen to others
• Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties and liabilities of trustees of a charitable company

About Student Action for Refugees

STAR (Student Action for Refugees) is the national network of students building a society where refugees and asylum seekers are welcomed and can thrive. 

Set up by students at Nottingham University in 1994, STAR is creating a more understanding, just and welcoming society by: 

• empowering young people to be changemakers; 
• providing practical support and connecting local communities through volunteering and student volunteer led community projects; 
• challenging the structural barriers that refugees and asylum seekers face when seeking protection and building new lives in the UK; 
• Sharing trusted information about asylum and the lived experience of refugees to combat misinformation, hostile narratives and instead spread compassion and humanisation 

We have a small staff team who train and support the network and lead on national campaign and advocacy work, with expertise in improving access to higher education for forced migrants.

Here are just some of our highlights from last year:

• 37  STAR university student society groups, across 28  towns and cities, run by 222 STAR student leaders. 
• 262 events were organised by STAR groups to educate, campaign, and fundraise for a more welcoming UK, from art exhibitions to cookery classes and film nights.
• 1,280 refugees and people seeking asylum were supported by 413 volunteers  through 28 community projects and 25 one off volunteering events. 
• 100s of students mobilised to support calls for better treatment of refugees in the UK including standing against detention, for a fairer plan for refugees and to lift the ban on work.
• 88 UK universities now offer sanctuary scholarships for refugee students. The STAR staff team was involved in the development of many of these new scholarships and the improvement of  existing scholarships. We also ran workshops for hundreds of  university staff. 
• 15 STAR groups campaigned for Equal Access at their institutions and 4 won!
• 65 aspiring refugee students were supported by our mentoring project and we provided signposting and advice about accessing HE to over 470 people.

Green Standard

The Green Standard is a new system that restores our natural world for future generations. Introducing the Green Standard Token, which is Earth’s first currency backed by protected land. That land is held in a nonprofit and owned by nature, meaning everything we do and how that land is used must serve nature. Our vision is for nature to be the world's largest landowner.

Our systems are not fit for purpose.

• Government: Short-term thinking neglects long-term challenges
• Business: Maximising ROI decimates nature
• Philanthropy: Reliant on free money and isn't scalable

But they're not going anywhere.

Answer: we must build alternative complimentary systems, like the Green Standard.

We are a community governed system based on ownership economic principles that adheres to circular economy requirements.

The Green Standard monetary system is similar to the Gold Standard where money was backed by gold. NOW money is backed by land, which must be used to serve nature.

Our company GST DAO Ltd is the sole service provider to our land trust and monetises the restoration and protection of nature. We plan to have a network of land stewards in place to operate on the land and share profit between the land stewards themselves, us and local communities.

What would Earth do?

If Earth could create new systems for humans to implement, in order to protect itself, what would it ask us to do?

Those systems would have to protect nature, sequester CO2 and be human-proof, so we don't destroy them.

Well, humans DO NOT destroy money.

So let's align the creation of money with the creation of nature.

 At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, and our fundraising is vital to enable us to continue providing care and support to the children: it costs around £13 million a year to run our care services. 

Join our amazing fundraising team for an exciting day of giving back on Saturday 5th July at Hanbury, we need enthusiastic volunteers to:

• Collect donations to support a great cause.
• Manning the awareness stand.
• A volunteer to dress up as Alex the Acorns!

This is a great opportunity to make a real difference, connect with the community, and support an important cause. Join us and be part of something special!

How much time will it take?

The event runs from  8am-1pm and 1pm-5pm; you can join for a few hours, or the full day—whatever suits you!

We’ll provide bottled water and snacks, parking should be available, and you’ll get free entry to the show!
