Role Description

You will live the values of Able Child, keeping the best interests of our staff, Network Members and the children we support at the heart of decision making. You will have capabilities to support Able Child ’s 2030 strategic objectives, ensuring Able Child remains well governed, financially stable and a respected voice in the sector.

You will be a skilled communicator, able to hold high level discussions while being diplomatic in your opinions. An enthusiastic and motivated individual, you will be willing to offer voluntary time outside your normal working hours. You will have the relevant expertise and experience to add value to our Board of Trustees, helping drive quality and sustainability across the organisation.

We are seeking individuals with expertise and experience in any or all of the following areas:

-  Human Resources

- Law (particularly charitable law, but other legal specialists are also welcome)

- Safeguarding

We recognise that there is currently a gap in female representation on our board and we particularly encourage applications from women. We also encourage applicants who represent the communities we work with in Africa. However, while we have a specific interest in these areas, we welcome all applicants who possess relevant experience.

Terms

Location: Board meetings are conducted primarily via video call, with a commitment to hold at least one face-to-face meeting annually.

Hours: Trustees are expected to attend quarterly Board meetings, which may be held on weekdays or Saturday mornings. Additional time may be required for participation in sub-committees or working groups to address matters between meetings, as well as pre-reading of Board papers.

Term: Trustees are able to serve three 3-year terms. We are looking for individuals who can commit to our board for a minimum of three years, except in the case of unforeseen circumstances which could prevent this.

Salary: This is an unpaid voluntary position. Reasonable travel expenses can be covered.

1. Support the delivery of Able Child ’s mission, vision and values by providing effective governance, strategic oversight and input into the running of the charity

2. Adhere to the core responsibilities of a trustee, as outlined by the Charity Commission.

3. Ensure that the charity complies with charity law, with the requirements of the Charity Commission and does not breach any requirements or rules set out in our governing documents.

4. To contribute towards securing a sustainable funding base for the organisation.

6. To facilitate introductions and connections to support the sustainability and growth of Able Child.

Competencies

Experience

1. Relevant experience in at least one professional area, including law, safeguarding, or HR.

2. Previous (or current) experience as a Trustee (not essential).

3. Experience, interest in or commitment to children, disability issues or international development.

What will I be doing?

Our amazing Activity Volunteers play a key role in supporting blind children and young people to take part in a variety of activities. These range from sports, creative (singing, performing, art), audiobook club and day trips. Our activities are designed for blind young people to meet new friends, gain confidence, learn new skills/sports, and become more independent. The skills you have developed in your career and personal life will be invaluable to our young people.

Our retail stores are the face of our charity on the high-street and in local communities. We have loads of amazing stock donated to us every week, and this all needs to be sorted, tagged and put on the shop-floor for sale!

What is PGIE?

In human healthcare, Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) has become a powerful way to make sure research meets real patient needs. At Humanimal Trust, we’re translating this idea into veterinary medicine through PGIE – bringing together patients (in our case animals, via their guardians), the public, and professionals, to develop best practices.

By joining, you’ll be helping to guide research, so it benefits both humans AND animals.

The role in a nutshell: 

Book volunteers help to keep Age UK charity shops running like clockwork and are an essential part of our retail division. Our charity shops raise vital funds, which aid and support a wide range of services of which Age UK delivers. If you have some free time available and have a passion for books, we can help you start a new chapter in your life and would love to hear from you. 

What will you be doing? 

In this role, you will be assisting the manager and wider team with ensuring that we have fresh and good quality stock available throughout our book department. 

How would you be supported in this role? 

When you become part of our team, you will receive a mixture of e-learning and ‘on the job practical training,’ to get you started. As you progress in the role, you will receive refresher training and ongoing support. We will also reimburse ‘role-related expenses’ and provide further opportunity to shape the volunteering that you do. 

Why do we need volunteers in this role? 

Book volunteers have an important part to play in the ongoing success of our retail division, as they help us raise funds though our shops, to reach and support more older people.

We're building a diverse community of tutors passionate about educational equity. We are seeking dedicated volunteers from all walks of life to tutor and support pupils facing socio-economic disadvantage in maths and English.

As a volunteer tutor, you’ll:

• Tutor a group of 1-3 pupils (primary or secondary), with options to support online or in-person.

Our Friends Ageing Better (FAB) project is looking for volunteer hosts for our weekly FAB Phone Cafe. In this role you'll be helping to create a friendly, welcoming space and community connections with a group of older people facing isolation.

At Age UK Bristol, we want to change the way we age. We aim to keep people aged 55+ well and active, encouraging Bristol to be an Age Friendly city. We do this in 3 ways - through providing practical help and supporting people’s emotional and physical wellbeing in a range of ways depending on their needs.  In addition, we want to prevent people from needing our help wherever possible.  We do this in our strategic work, where we aim to create the conditions for older adults to remain healthy and independent.

We are currently looking for volunteers for our Phone Cafes on

Tuesdays 11:00-12:00 and 2:00-3:00pm

This role involves

• Welcoming older people who are new to the telephone group.
• Facilitating conversation in the group
• Keeping attendance sheets for group participants.
• Providing information about events and activities happening in the local area with the support of the FAB team

The qualities and skills required for this role are

• A friendly disposition, with the ability to create a welcoming atmosphere and include people so as to encourage an enjoyable experience.
• Ability to be assertive and intervene if necessary, for instance manage group members who may dominate the conversation
• Reliability and punctuality – calls need to run on time.

CPRE Buckinghamshire (part of CPRE – The Countryside Charity) is looking for a Trustee with a background, or strong interest, in the local farming community. This Trustee will take the lead in our campaign to support sustainable farming and agricultural practices, and will help us to partner with relevant groups, with the aim of enhancing and protecting Buckinghamshire’s wildlife and countryside. 

This volunteer role would suit someone living or studying in Buckinghamshire who would like to be involved in campaigning and sharing their expertise with other Trustees, volunteers and members of CPRE.

You will ideally have experience of, or a deep interest in, sustainable farming, and agricultural practices that ensure food production without compromising the environment or future generations' ability to meet their needs. Your expertise will help us to demonstrate how farming today can focus on reducing its impact on ecosystems, can promote biodiversity, and can minimise energy use.

As a Trustee, you will also be part of our small and collaborative Trustee board. You will help to deliver our strategy, vision and mission, and guide the future direction of CPRE Buckinghamshire. Along with the other Trustees, you will ensure that the charity has the necessary policies and resources, complies with legal requirements, and adheres to its governing document. 

This is a volunteer team that typically works remotely, though some occasional face-to-face meetings may occur when needed – we will pay expenses in these instances. We estimate that the commitment would be around 2–3 hours a week, but you can of course do more if you wish!

We are looking for a volunteer with strong analytical skills who wants to support our efforts in assessing the impact and effectiveness of our programmes. Initially your role will focus on basic data analysis and entry for our programme surveys. As we improve our M&E capacity, there will also be opportunities to contribute your insights and suggestions to help strengthen our overall design.

Who We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

• A passion for education and belief in our mission

• Familiarity with Excel / Google Sheets, and Monday. com 

• Experience in data collection, survey design, statistical analysis would be an asset

• A proactive attitude, reliable, punctual, and possess an eagerness to learn

• Attention to detail and organisational skills

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Key Responsibilities:

• Collect, clean, and analyse qualitative and quantitative data collected from programme surveys

• Occasionally compile reports from these results

• Help identify trends, challenges, and areas for improvement across M&E efforts

• Support the future design and implementation of additional M&E tools
