Branch Secretary – Help your local branch make a difference

Location: Anywhere in Dorset and surrounding areas

Hours: Flexible – volunteering can fit around your existing commitments

Role Type: Volunteer

Travel: Access to public transport or a car for meetings is desirable, but not essential

IT requirements: Access to a laptop or computer and the internet for branch administration.

Could you use your organisation and communication skills to help a local volunteer team support the Armed Forces community? As a Volunteer Branch Secretary, you will help keep the branch connected, well organised and compliant. You will work alongside the Branch Chair, Branch Treasurer and other volunteers, with full training and ongoing support provided.

 About the role

Our network of branch volunteers brings together diverse skills and community connections that help SSAFA make a meaningful difference to serving personnel, veterans and their families in their time of need.

As Branch Secretary, you will oversee the communication and administration needed to help the branch run effectively. You will support the Branch Chair and Branch Treasurer, help create a welcoming experience for volunteers, and coordinate activity that raises awareness of SSAFA within the local community.

You may:

• Keep branch volunteers informed and maintain clear, regular communication

• Provide timely reports and information to SSAFA’s central office

• Coordinate a programme of meetings, including the AGM, branch and committee meetings, and training

• Support local awareness of SSAFA and build connections with advocates, ambassadors and supporters

• Keep branch volunteers up to date with mandatory training requirements

• Support the Branch Chair to ensure branch activity follows SSAFA regulations and relevant regulatory practices

• Work with Community Engagement Volunteers and other branch officers to help activities run smoothly and compliantly

What we’re looking for

You do not need previous charity or volunteering experience. You will be a good fit if you are:

• Friendly, approachable and able to create a welcoming environment

• Well organised, with strong administration and coordination skills

• A clear and confident communicator, both in writing and conversation

• Reliable and able to share information in a timely way

• Comfortable using a computer, email and the internet

• Able to work collaboratively with volunteers and colleagues

• Willing to follow guidance, maintain confidentiality and support good governance

• Motivated to raise awareness of SSAFA and support the Armed Forces community

What you’ll gain

• The opportunity to use your skills, knowledge and life experience to benefit others

• Full support from the Branch Chair, Community Engagement Volunteers, Community Engagement Coordinator, Community Engagement Managers and the wider SSAFA team

• Online training modules to complete at home, access to e-learning courses and local opportunities to keep your training up to date

• Experience and transferable skills that can support your personal or professional development

• A welcoming and supportive volunteer community

• Reimbursement of reasonable out-of-pocket expenses in line with SSAFA’s expenses policy

Why volunteer with SSAFA?

SSAFA believes that no one who has served our country should ever battle alone. Our values of Commitment, Compassion, Integrity and Understanding are at the heart of everything we do, and we ask our volunteers to uphold these values alongside our BRAVE standards.

By helping your branch stay connected, organised and active in the community, you will support more people to understand that SSAFA is here to help and encourage the public support that enables our services to continue.

Ready to make a difference? Apply today and help your local SSAFA branch support the Armed Forces community.

SSAFA is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all those involved in our work and expects volunteers to share this commitment.
