Are you a Solicitor with experience of housing and homelessness law and Legal Aid? If so then consider a move to Shelter and you could soon be making a real difference to people affected by the housing emergency.

About the role

Using your legal expertise, you will play a key role in tackling housing injustice and unfair housing practices. You will be working under our Legal Aid contract, delivering legal advice and representing tenants at court where needed. Delivering systemic change through legal challenge to prevent homelessness will also be a considerable part of the role. You will also work with the team in the Hub to help make sure people in the community are aware of their housing rights and how to enforce them, as well as providing support to Trainee Solicitors and Legal Advisers, ensuring good practice and compliance.

About You

Qualified as a Solicitor,  you will have a strong knowledge of housing law and substantial experience of managing a wide range of housing cases. You have strong skills in court advocacy, litigation, report writing, file reviews and are able to meet financial targets. You will be able to meet the 2018 SQM supervisor standard in housing and be able to demonstrate experience of working under a legal aid contract.

About The Team

Our Legal Service provides specialist legal knowledge across Shelter through four teams covering Community Legal advice, Strategic Litigation, the National Legal Team and Legal Support Team. You will be part of our Community Legal Team, who are based across our 11 hub locations and work alongside hub colleagues every day to fight housing injustice and deliver systemic change relating to housing practice in our local communities.

Shelter North East has been supporting people in the region for over 25 years and provides advice over 12 local authorities. We are made up of an advice team, legal team, administration team as well as support services which include Housing First and DIY skills service. National staff based in the hub include a Community Fundraiser and Community Organiser, Lived Experience Officer and Business Development Manager.

We aim to bring about systemic change through our work with clients, training for our partners and volunteers and using evidence to bring about housing procedural and policy changes for people in the North East.

About the role

This role will be an expert resource to support the Housing Income Team on legal issues and best practice on all aspects of income management and debt recovery. Ensuring collection of the maximum amount of rental income to ensure sufficient revenue to maintain a first-class housing service, and good quality, safe homes as well as compliance with all relevant legislation, including the Social Housing (Regulation) Act 2023. There will be a focus on reviewing, implementing and monitoring of tenant service charges and legislative changes which may impact on what we can collect.

The role will help drive a positive performance culture with a tenant centred approach and will manage a small team of Tenancy Sustainment Officers as well as deputise for the Income Management Team Leader in their absence.

About you

You should be educated to degree level or able to demonstrate significant experience in an equivalent role, have a high level of literacy and analytical skills and experience of working with a range of client groups within the community. Working knowledge of housing, landlord and tenant legislation, regulations, standards and core disciplines of work area is essential for this role as is experience of successfully managing staff, debt recovery and service charging in a social housing setting.

You must be an excellent communicator, be literate and be able to use a range of Microsoft Office products and work specific software packages. There is a requirement for you to also be available as part of the council’s emergency planning arrangements subject to service requirements.

A clean driving licence and access to a car is essential for this role.

Situated in the middle of Horsham, the service has strong links with and contributes to the local community.

We are looking for a Housing Night Worker to join our Horsham Y team. Main areas of responsibilities are:

Safety and security

• Provide a friendly and professional front-of-house welcome to residents, visitors and staff, and ensure the building is safe, secure quiet and welcoming 
• Maximise the wellbeing of residents and visitors by ensuring adherence to health and safety protocols and house rules, all within the terms of tenancy agreements
• Assess and monitor the risks presented by residents to ensure they can keep themselves safe and, where possible, continue their development
• Record all incidents and accidents and share appropriately with the wider team, your manager and, if necessary, the central safeguarding team 

Engagement with residents

• Welcome residents home and provide informal and responsive support so they can articulate their aspirations and ambitions and acquire the skills they need to live independent and fulfilling lives
• Ensure resident’s views, aspirations, concerns, and ideas are sought so they can play an active role in influencing the services they receive
• Proactively promote the services on offer and ensure residents are encouraged to engage with those services
• Contribute to, or support, evening groupwork activities so that residents can access tailored solutions that meet their needs, wishes and aspirations

Administration and housekeeping

• Undertake tasks as directed, including but not limited to: inputting data, assessments, reviews, case notes onto our client database and entering new residents details/closing ex-resident records

General

• Work as part of a team, on a rota four on four off shift pattern, alongside another Housing Night Worker, ensuring young people at the service have non-judgemental, objective at night, along with taking responsibility for personal safety during periods of lone working
• Contribute to a great working environment, with a calm, yet assertive manner, being able to handle potentially difficult situations
• Participate in relevant continuing professional development and utilise Reflective Practice Supervision as part of leading psychologically informed practice

As Director of Services, you will be responsible for the leadership, development and integration of all frontline services at the centre, covering Housing, Health, Youth Work, Rough Sleeping, and Youth Justice. You will work to ensure that services are high quality, joined-up, trauma-informed, and relentlessly focused on the needs and potential of the young people the organisation serves. The Role

About the role

Crisis is the national charity for people experiencing homelessness. We know that homelessness is not inevitable. We know that together we can end it.

Crisis Skylight Oxford is located in the Old Fire Station in the centre of the city. Our team provide a one to one specialist housing led service to help people find and secure affordable housing. We offer person centred support and will help people with anything else that will support someone to end their homelessness, such as mental health and well-being, finances or finding employment. Alongside the coaching we offer practical and creative workshops.

The Old Fire Station building also accommodates a range of flexible arts spaces which are run by an independent arts company.  

As a coach/ lead worker in the structured coaching team with a landlord liaison specialism, you be supporting people to prevent their homelessness or supporting people who are homeless into the Private Rental Sector.

You will be the lead worker for people who have engaged well with the service and are able to work with you to develop and follow a personalised plan to end their homelessness.

With a specialism in landlord liaison you will be finding, securing and maintaining the relationships we need with private and social landlords to provide a supply of good quality and affordable homes for Crisis members.

The key to success will be your ability, as part of the Crisis team, to make collaborative, consistent and persistent relationships with each person

About you

· Experience of working within a relevant sector (e.g. homelessness, mental health, drug and alcohol treatment) and have good knowledge of relevant housing, homelessness and welfare legislation

· Excellent understanding of the rental housing market local to Skylight Oxford and experience of sourcing and procuring properties including demonstratable knowledge of the legal requirements when letting a property

· Understanding of both the needs of social and private landlords and the barriers and opportunities faced by people moving out of homelessness and into housing.

· Effective negotiation skills with the ability to mediate between parties who may have different priorities and to broker agreements
