Check my CVQuaker Social Action (QSA) has recently started responding to homelessness for the first time after a planned merger with homelessness charity, Quaker Homeless Action. Cook Up is a brand new response we are keen to pilot, which if successful we would like to run as a permanent QSA project. This is an exciting time to join the organisation and make your mark on how we respond to homelessness in the future.
Cook Up; a kitchen space for those without a kitchen, aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people with experience of homelessness by providing a clean and safe space to cook and eat, where those attending will have choice and control over the meal they make for themselves. Our aspiration is that cooking in the kitchen is something people can look forward to. We are piloting this response to see if we can meet the intended outcomes and determine if there is sufficient demand for the service.
We’re looking for someone who is passionate about supporting people facing difficulties to seek solutions to the problems affecting their lives. You’ll also have an interest in cooking, nutrition or wellbeing. The successful candidate will have an adaptable and flexible problem-solving attitude as there are opportunities to respond creatively to challenges or barriers preventing people using the service. This pilot is a chance to experiment, reflect and redesign the service depending on the needs that present themselves. This will be a learning experience to see if this approach has tangible benefits to those who use it, or whether a different approach would yield better results, so an open mind to possibilities is essential.
You will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the service so will need to be organised and resilient. You will have the freedom to develop the service in collaboration with the cooks who use the service and will have support at QSA with marketing, budgeting, assessing and mitigating against risk, and measuring impact.

QSA has fifteen years’ experience in financial capability through its award-winning project Made of Money, directly supporting people on low incomes to improve their skills and confidence around money management, as well as training professionals from across the country to better support the people they work with. Often, talking about money management is not the core part of our professional training participants’ work, but one which fits in with a whole host of other elements of support, for example around housing, parenting or employability.
In January 2021, QSA won a tender from the Money and Pensions Service (MaPS) to set up the first ever community of practice for precisely this group of people, as part of MaPS Money Guiders capacity building programme. This is an exciting project, creating an opportunity for a broad network of professionals to come together to enhance their money guidance skills, improving support for the communities they work with.
The term “community of practice” itself may be less well known but the benefits of learning from and with peers engaged in similar work is a familiar one. An alternative term is quality improvement network, a familiar concept within the healthcare and education sectors.
We are committed to a multi-faceted approach to developing the community, including building a digital platform that is user-friendly and accessible, with a plethora of stimulating and engaging resources, tools and online gatherings, supplemented by face to face forums and events when that proves possible.
Our guiding principle will be to ask practitioners to explore with us what they need to drive up quality of delivery; what formats they will find accessible and convivial; how they will action their learning and keep in touch with other members. Our approach will be interpretative rather than directive or informative. Made of Money and MaPS possess some of the knowledge practitioners need to drive up quality, but it is the network members themselves who will know what is most important and useful.
We are looking for someone who will be instrumental in facilitating a multi-channel community of practice for staff and volunteers across varied occupational sectors who provide money guidance to the public in England, helping to drive up quality by providing a safe space for practitioners with a range of prior experience to share challenges, insights and best practice.
This is an exciting and challenging brief with a requirement to engage 60 practitioners by August 2021, facilitate a conference in November 2021, with the network growing to at least 200 by February 2022. Key performance indicators will be the numbers of participants engaged and feedback which they provide about the network’s usefulness in improving the quality of their practice.
