Policy and Public Affairs Officer

Fixed Term: 12 month contract

Salary: £25,000 - £27,000 per annum (depending on experience), plus benefits

Full time – 37.5 hours a week

World Cancer Research Fund International is a leading authority on cancer prevention research related to diet, weight and physical activity. World Cancer Research Fund International is a not-for-profit organisation that:

  • Funds and analyses worldwide scientific research
  • Influences public health policy at the highest level, and acts as trusted advisor to governments and other official bodies from around the world
  • Leads & unifies a network of cancer prevention charities based in the USA, United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. 

We are looking for a talented and committed individual to play a key role in our policy activities. Our Policy and Public Affairs Department works at the global level to encourage the adoption of effective policies to prevent cancer and other NCDs through healthy diet and body weight, more physical activity and lower levels of alcohol intake. Our work ultimately aims to help people meet WCRF International’s Recommendations for Cancer Prevention.

A major task of the Policy and Public Affairs Officer is to be responsible for taking forward specific activities and deliverables of the ground-breaking EU Commission’s Horizon2020 project – Confronting obesity: co-creating policies with youth - working towards ending childhood obesity in Europe. The role involves sourcing, reviewing and assessing policy documents and legislation on diet and physical activity. 

Therefore, technical competency in understanding and analysing public policy interventions and policy actions is essential, as is the ability to synthesise complex information from a range of sources. Ideally you will have some knowledge of policy on the prevention of cancer, NCDs, overweight/obesity and/or food, physical activity as it relates to health. 

You will also provide support to the work of the Department’s Evidence for Policy work, in particular through developing, updating and maintaining the NOURISHING and MOVING policy databases and developing relevant policy briefs on issues related to diet, weight and physical activity.
